Barbra Streisand - I Never Meant To Hurt You Lyrics

I never meant to hurt you
I'm not that way at all
Please believe the words of the heart
A heart that seems so small
And I swear I never meant to hurt you
I guess I lost my place
Please, believe the wards of the heart
A heart that hides its fails
Why do I do things
I never mean to do?
Oh, why did I speak so carelessly
When all that I felt
Was love for you?
And I swear I never
I never meant to hurt you
I've got to make you know
Please, believe the words of the heart
A heart that didn't show
I never meant to hurt you
I only meant to love you
It's true
And when I saw you crying
I cried too...

Barbra Streisand I Never Meant To Hurt You Comments
  1. J.... S....

I ran across a recently released version by Roslyn Kind of Laura Nyro's "Save the Country" . Roslyn is a half sister of Barbra. If you like Laura Nyro's music, check it out- it is great.

    Beautiful Barbara.

  3. R.... D....

I've always LOVED this song. Played it for an ex after we got in a huge fight... He was touched. We never married. 😢

  4. I.... ....

Loving all the wonderful comments about this absolutely gorgeous performance of one of Laura Nyro's best songs. I am a long-time Barbra fan and ironically this was my first album of hers way back in 1971 on 8-track no less! I listened to it daily and it is still my favorite album of hers. Barbra can interpret a song better than just about anyone in my opinion. She is an absolutely outstanding vocalist and actress. She is so connected to her lyrics. Brava, Ms. Streisand!

    Bloody beautiful!

  6. b.... ....

Hauntingly beautiful soul-deep Streisand performance show she had a special affinity for Laura Nyro songs, this one is a keeper...

  7. G.... M....

I always loved this song of Laura Nyro's and when I heard this version by Barbra Streisand it inspired me to record this for a demo I was working on. And then I had to include Since I Fell For You, after all.

  8. F.... C....

Being a Streisand fan since I saw her on PM East while she was belting in Greenwich Village dives, and Nyro since Eli LP came out, the combination of these two is astounding! I kind of moved on once Babs went to Hollywood. This is one of her best, ranking right there with her first LP

  9. R.... D....

Wow... only 257 likes on this song? This is one of her best. Just beautiful. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  10. A.... B....

If I was Ever Alone on a Desert Island with just six records, I would choose six records by Barbra Streisand.

  11. p.... r....

Wow - Why didn't she include this on her Stoney End Album w/the other Nyro numbers. To Chris N - Yes, Barbra and Laura worked more than well together. And Nyro wrote so many of the late Sixties pop masterpieces -- what a writer and vocalist. (9/2017)

  12. L.... P....

Only recently learned that Barbra Streisand covered this Laura Nyro tune in 1971 ... what a happy surprise to find it here on YouTube. :) In 1971, Barbra was only 29, Laura only 24.

    L.... P....

Thia is Barbra at her best

A beautiful version of the Laura Nyro original. Bab's has done several Nyro songs such as Stoney End - there are three Nyro songs on Bab's 1971 LP of the same name. What a Bronx child prodigy and genius Nyro was - she wrote these songs as a teenager. She also wrote 'And When I Die' (a massive hit for Blood Sweat and Tears and Peter Paul and Mary) when she was 16 or 17. She must have been born an old soul.

  14. C.... N....

Streisand and Nyro were a magic combination. Coming together at the exact right moment in their careers. And anyone who doesn't "get" Barbra, or thinks of her as a Broadway belter should listen to this little masterpiece.

    I have tear's

    K.... S....

A lot of Nyro's songs will do that to you. They don't necessarily have to be sad: just the sheer beauty of the song will move you.

    K.... S....

    Me too. 😢

  16. D.... A....

My favorite album of hers. Recall when it came out.

    D.... A....

+Denise A. .. It is my favorite album of hers also.

  17. E.... D....

Not a very good recording, I remember this sound in the background when I was much much younger when I would play MY CASSETTES and I would listen ever soo caerfully and then I would hear it....... music playing faintly in the background playing muffled bacwards like something from outer space.... hmmm good memory, not soo much for the hears though..LOL

    E.... D....

I agree, I heard it too, maybe it's copied from a cassette tape and the B side can be heard in backward?

  18. u.... ....

    But you did

  19. N.... B....

And when I saw you crying,
    I... cried... too.

    What an ending.

    N.... B....

+Alexandre -- It's a keeper, isn't it? One that goes "direttamente ai nostri cuori." Assolutamente.

    N.... B....

I learned some Italian studying and living in Rome for a year. Since then I have continued my study of the language. Where did you learn Portuguese?

    N.... B....

    Heartfelt thanks Alexandre <3

Think of the many number of people who might have not been very familiar with Laura Nyro. Listening to Ms. Streisand just might have made someone say "I like this.." Just maybe someone would have been interested in exploring the magic that is Laura Nyro. One of those people was me. Because of Ms. Streisand's versions of Laura Nyro, I became a huge fan too. I thank the Fifth Dimension for that same reason, too.

  21. M.... M....

Pure perfection,I agree simply the best

  22. r.... f....

One of Barbra's finest recordings.... flawless intonation.....

  23. P.... D....

This is Babs at what she does best, And to Grooverunner, Barbra recorded all the following Laura Nyro songs from Flim Flam Man/Hands off the Man, Stoney End, I never meant to Hurt you, & Time and Love, There's no disputing La Streisands talent, but those who know Laura Nyro's music and her work, not too mention one of the most beautiful voices ever to grace the world, there is just nothing like the real thing. in this case, the original, Laura's version.

    P.... D....

Yes, many of Laura's songs didn't become "commercially" successful until they were done by other "more famous" artists. And, a lot of people don't remember or didn't know that Laura, herself had a beautiful and true, real, clear, singing voice. I also agree that these kinds of intimate, meaningful, feeling-focused ballads with a not too overpowering orchestration/accompaniment is what Barbra does best.

  24. A.... ....

Barbra's finest recording ever. Period. A gloriously simple and flawlessly written tune sung by the greatest "singing actress" ever. Pure perfection.

    A.... ....

I agree; probably her finest recording.

  25. g.... ....

Just like Dionne worked with Bacharach/David, I wish that Streisand would have sang a whole lot more of Laura Nyro's songs and had them produced by Richard Perry. this is just "magic". thank you!

  26. R.... S....

The song AND Barbra's performance are flawless.

  27. Y.... T....

I just played this song three times... I just heard this song for the first time and now I'm in the state of a broken heart....this song makes me tear so greatly but it's true... I never meant to hurt you..............all I meant is LOVE

    Y.... T....

Bless the people (like you) who have the courage to be human.

    Y.... T....

    Yoz Tanuwiria awe.... 😢

  28. J.... K....

OMG, I never heard this song by Barbara...oh this is beautiful..she is flawless.

  29. K.... L....

Don't care for this for Babs, too slooow.

  30. j.... c....

Love this with Laura the most but Babs is quite soulful as well.

  31. F.... s....

I love this ballad arrangment too. Thank you so much for putting these beautiful songs. I would actually love to hear her version of Carol King's "Where to lead" from this album.
