Barbra Streisand - Being Alive Lyrics

Someone to hold you too close
Someone to hurt you too deep
Someone to sit in your chair
And ruin your sleep
And make you aware of being alive

Someone to need you too much
Someone to know you too well
Someone to pull you up short
And put you through hell
And give you support for being alive-being alive
Make me alive, make me confused
Mock me with praise, let me be used
Vary my days, but alone is alone, not alive!

Somebody hold me too close
Somebody force me to care
Somebody make me come through
I'll always be there
As frightened as you of being alive,
Being alive, being alive!

Someone you have to let in
Someone whose feelings you spare
Someone who, like it or not
Will want you to share a little, a lot of being alive
Make me alive, make me confused
Mock me with praise, let me be used
Vary my days, but alone is alone, not alive!

Somebody crowd me with love
Somebody force me to care
Somebody make me come through
I'll always be there
As frightened as you to help us survive,
Being alive, being alive, being alive, being alive

please watch and listen to the live 2016 version. A voice who has lived, and found being alive. Her voice isn't has pure, but she's got that vibrato, and the phrasing. I saw her in San Jose, just watched the video and chills went up my spine..again. there's something about a singer singing songs when they've been there and done that.

  12. M.... 8....

    Who needs Abraham.
    I have Armen.
Today, July 20 20018 when you hear this voice.
    Fuck with the best...
    Die like the rest.

    *Best* is an advertising term.

  15. J.... N....

Barbra will allways be unforgettable, exquisite, feminine, with a voice most people only dream of having. And a perfect diva

  16. M.... M....

C est quoi ces commentaires ? Barbra est la meilleure avec tout mon respect pour les autres chanteuses

  17. c.... ....

Love this album. Wonderful cover photo too.

  18. m.... ....

it's so beautiful We can not resist.

  19. E.... T....

wow, 1985, bought the latest walkman, my cassette of this album & for three months in a national tour Barbara was my best & only true friend!
    Gr@cias Barbara!!!

  20. L.... l....

I love Barbra Streisand but I think the mood of the song is way to happy and punchy for the lyrics being said. The song is about the fear of being alone and being afraid of commitment at the same time.I think a more somber background would work better with the songs message

    L.... l....

But it's Barbra so she changed the direction,it's now more about BEING ALIVE than being alone or afraid.

    L.... l....

Let lil live Also, Sondheim was there with her at one point during the production...allowing some of her infamous changes...she had her own vision for what she wanted. It may not be what Sondheim originally intended, but you know our Barbra...she has to do her own thing. Her version is empowering to me. And that finale? Wow.

  21. v.... ....

    Bad arrangement

    v.... ....

    Yeah. Like your parents' marriage.

    a.... g....

Thank you for that. The lyrics are everything!

  23. c.... ....

Her voice is always perfect - just maturing like a fine wine. Perhaps deeper now, richer, with a slight wobble in the middle register. But her performance and musicality is second to none.

    c.... ....

This song is from 30 years ago.

  24. D.... S....

    When her voice was perfect.

    D.... S....

Naw man.. this is still past her prime- amazing but not even close- from 1970 to 1979 was the pinnacle of vocal perfection

    D.... S....

Steve Soares Oh, I totally disagree. Then again, it’s all subjective. Some even prefer her 2017 vocals. Depends on the listener. I did not much like her late 70s sound...or very early 80s on some recordings. I love her most NOW...and 60s. This album was one of the ones that are an exception for me...because it’s the one where I discovered her.

    D.... S....

Steve Soares Also...past her prime? She’s, arguably, done more since 1985...than she did before. 1985 is 34 years ago...1962 was 23 years before this album. She wasn’t even at her halfway point yet.

  25. S.... K....

    My favorite on the album!

  26. J.... S....

By far the best version of this song. Fantastic and exciting arrangement. And one hell of a powerful vocal. That's why this album one the Grammy for best album !

    J.... S....

As good as this version is - and IT IS - I think Dean Jones did a fantastic job as the original Bobby - sadly he felt unable to continue in the show - he was the perfect Bobby, far better than the others that have followed.

    J.... S....

Sorry, but I saw Raul Esparza in the last revival. He was awesome!

    J.... S....

Charles Jenkins Larry Kert, his replacement is very good

  27. M.... M....

WOW! This version and Bernadette Peters' versions I like the best!

  28. v.... J....

    Beautiful ........................

  29. E.... C....

Beautiful song sung by a graceful angelic voice, think Barbra Streisand has the best female voice ever since Billie Holiday xxx

    E.... C....

Billie Holiday barely has any voice at all
phenomenal musician and artist. barely any voice.

    E.... C....

Streisand's singing is just like Richard Burton's acting - always overdone.

  30. R.... I....

One of her best. Love the feeling she exudes.
Thanks Eric for your wonderful selection.

  31. A.... R....

Barbra Streisand is an amazing singer and performer, but this arrangement...I just feel so much of the emotion and original intent of the song is lost

    A.... R....

It makes me want to sing

    A.... R....

    Yeah, it's a bit flouncy isn't it?

  32. t.... ....

patty and barbra both great with this song..just different..takes..

  33. s.... ....

    Totally Awesome!
    I love this performance!
I really love this arrangement, and I've had the pleasure of playing it for a wonderful artist a few years ago!

  34. t.... k....

This is marriage. plain and simple.

  35. Q.... G....

honestly i like the instrument arrangement more than anything. its a bit of 80s flare that has some good stuff going for it. but yeah, patti lupone is clearly the superior female broadway star whose performed this

    Q.... G....

@Brian Manhart When is the last time, well the first time Patti Lupone had a number album?

    Q.... G....

@ryan ahr Patti Lupone is a Broadway actress and singer. I don't know about you, but a woman who plays so many roles on Broadway and is considered a Broadway sweetheart, yeah, she fucking matters. So, even though I personally prefer Barbra, who yes, does get much more fame and awards, it is ignorant for you to go spouting about things you don't know about. Seriously, I think Barbra is better, but I still hold Patti in high regard and admire her work. Do your fucking research.

    Q.... G....

Ryan ahr and bri ban Patti lupone was the original eva peron in evita and played joan ramsey on american horror story coven

    Q.... G....

When did patti do anything outside this street called " Broadway"? The answer is "never." Sorry, but she is still in a small fish in the very insignificant pond of Broadway and probably will stay there because her talent is limited. Sorry

    Q.... G....

When did Patti do anything outside Broadway? Google her name and you'll be quite surprised.

  36. p.... z....

la mejor version, voz y cantante del mundo, para mi.

  37. A.... G....

    This makes me feel alive.

  38. S.... D....

Barbra if you are going to sing a song that Patti LuPone sang brilliantly, you have to work harder and sing the song as it is written by the composer.  Maybe this is why you could never or have never written a broadway show.  And now your,re too old your range in singing is pathetic.

    S.... D....

LOL That's real cute. By the way, liking Barbra and having a life are NOT mutually exclusive. I have a life too, but with more logic than yours. LOL

    S.... D....

@ryan ahr Oh it's a match of wits.  Please come well armed if you choose to continue your sarcasm.  Never did I say or insinuate that having a life and liking Barbra Streisand are mutually exclusive.  Your logic, sir, is clearly flawed.  Have a great day.  Cheers!

    S.... D....

And you're a bad never were!!!

    S.... D....

No, stupid! That shows how much he RESPECTED her.

    S.... D....

LMAO Patti Lupone?? Who the F is that???? Oh, I know, that overly nasally screeching broadway singer - sort of brash. If she had sung it so brilliantly, then Streisand wouldn't have won the grammy for this album and sold 5Million copies. I don't Patti Lupone has ever charted with anything she's sung. Lastly, Streisand starred on Broadway in FUNNY GIRL and won rave reviews and NY Drama Critics award and an TONY award for actress of the decade. She then went on to star in the Movie version of Funny Girl -- and won the Oscar. If Lupone had 1/4 the talent, she would have crossed over and made more of a name for herself.

  39. K.... T....

umm....It was nominated the Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal when Barbra did The Broadway Album.

  40. l.... ....

Great song, brilliant singer. But what a God awful arrangement

  41. J.... T....

Oh, how I love this album!

  42. h.... ....

i agree she did an amazing job absolutely, but i think i prefer the slow versions better it makes the song seem more meaningful to me :)

  43. h.... ....

i admit i heard the song from glee first then watched the broadway show and heard other versions but i agree with this comment

  44. p.... ....

ARRRGHHH -_____- Is there any fuckin Being Alive video ON YT without Kurt Hummel top comments on it??!!! I've been listenin this song for years and from several diferent artists and I only heard glee's version once BECAUSE a friend of mine forced me too. FOR HEAVEN's SAKE DON'T you come here compare that kid to freaking BARBRA STREISAND -____- arrghh gawd this world

  45. S.... D....

Patti LuPone sings this song tremendously better!!

  46. W.... L....

Oh Barbra:Thank you for giving us the best years of your life. This must have been 30 years ago when you were at your "protean peak" as Marilyn Bergman may have said it in the linear notes.Your delivery of this song stimulates me with pleasure, awareness and gratitude for being alive.

  47. P.... B....

this song always gave me chills, but coming from a goddess like Babs... i'm a wreck

  48. M.... ....

Regarding music a very own and cool version, but she completely loses the context of the lyrics by singing it like this. I don't believe a word she sings, but again how she does it is phenomenal

  49. t.... ....

<3 this version as much as Kurt Hummel's on Glee..I used to sing along with her record when i was a kid..And I had a pretty damn good voice back then;)!

  50. p.... ....

Oh Barbra Streisand. Why must you be so unnattainably amazing?

  51. E.... K....

    kurt hummel for president pls

  52. D.... D....

thanks Babs for all the joy i have felt since i ever heard this song
    bless your hearty interpretation!

  53. s.... ....

Greta song, shitty arrangement. I agree with Matt and Trey on the subject of Bar-bu-ra.

  54. A.... H....

barbra = QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE

  55. R.... ....

    Good job, Barbra!

  56. D.... P....

    @Ingridsister Voz ochentera?
Barbra es una de las mejores voces del siglo XX, ademas, empezo en los anos 60. Su calidad y fama no es facilmente igualada - es una clasica!
Tu descripcion es una indicacion de tu ignorancia.

  57. o.... ....

    @w2npjvve agreed!

  58. w.... ....

I love how she becomes one w/ the orchestra. This is the best version of this song I've ever heard.
