Band, The - The Shape I'm In Lyrics
Go out yonder, peace in the valley
Come downtown, have to rumble in the alley
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in
Has anybody seen my lady?
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in
I'm gonna go down by the water
But I ain't gonna jump in, no, no
I'll just be looking for my neighbor
And I hear that's where she's been? Oh!
Out of nine lives, I spent seven
Now, how in the world do you get to Heaven?
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in
I just spent 60 days in the jailhouse
For the crime of having no dough
Now here I am back out on the street
For the crime of having nowhere to go
Save your neck or save your brother
Looks like it's one or the other
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in
Now two young kids might start a ruckus
You know they feel you trying to shuck us
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in

Band, The The Shape I'm In Comments
It is incredible how richard manuel could sound amazing like on this song and few songs later during the show, been totally screwed up and not able to sing anylonger (during king harvest, or even at the final i shall be released he missed a cue and could not reach his falsetto ) Poor richard, you were in a bad shape in 1976 :(
Dude could play great music after slamming 6 bottles of Grand Marnier....I can't even work my phone after a 6 pack
❤❤❤
Nice job by Richard Manuel!
and Levon did it , love them both , All
People say he comes in late but sounds just fuckin fine to me.
"People" can go fuck themselves... Sounds great. ;-)
Little bit sad that the movie only give Richard one main song..think his voice deserve more
I am really digging everyone's big, full curly hair (though not that fluffed out big curly hair that came next). Maybe not the Jumanji sideburns, but the hair almost makes it passable. Something really cool about taking a shaggy guy, styling his hair, and putting him in a suit. A NICE suit, not a suit with an ego.
Kind of looks like my boyfriends' hair but turned up a few notches of 'I'll grow it out 4 months past you think I look homeless', you can't do that now cause nobody puts up with it till it gets out of the homeless stage
Richard Manuel talks like my uncle Richard, weird
Ohhhh !!!!! what a beautiful clear powerful voice richard has.
💜💜
Robbie pretending to be leading the band... poser.
For good or bad, he was the biggest self promoter. Always liked the others more, myself, especially criminally underrated Richard. And, of course, Levon.
Fucking Beautiful Richard! RIP brother!
❤❤❤❤❤
I've never been as High as Richard Manuel
Yes, I capitalized high on purpose, because he is high with a capital H.
Robbie Robertson wrote another great! Another brilliant Canadian.
0:11 when you've done too much coke and realise it's your turn to sing.
By that time he was up to 7 bottles of Grand Marnier per day. Lahium yiddish for diabetes.
i saw these pricks...and i call them that because....they were headlining THE NASSAU COLISEUM...this is at the peak of their popularity....and these fucking cunts barely played ONE HOUR....and split....a major arena...sold out...had to be 14,000 people there....and after playing for an hour...they walk off. never forgot that...that is what i call contempt for your audience. as for the one hour they played...forgettable...not like in this video clip. all uppity and arrogant...once the band broke up these guys never did anything major ever again...never made big money again...their solo albums didnt sell...they never played arenas...they took their success for granted...like mick jagger said about brian jones...not everyones cut out to handle success in rock n roll. PS- robbie was in cahoots with the manager and took all the credit, all the royalties, all the money....i will never believe robbie wrote those songs by himself....never. he's full of shit.
What was the date?
For some reason I always seem to forget how much I love Richard's voice. It is so awesome! To be honest, I like all of their voices on various songs!!
Has anyone ever sung or sounded like Richard Manuel? No. Never. One of a kind.
Each of the four times that I saw & heard these guys is still special to me.
I love Rick's singing. I love Levon's singing. But wow, Richard sounds so darn awesome on this. What a cool voice, what a song, what a delivery!!
Richard, oh Richard...how I wish you'd never have drank that first drop of booze.
We never knew the shape Richard Manuel was really in.
We did, the day after... ;-(
Out of nine lives , I spent seven .... any better
So much great musicianship here.

Even as fucked up as he looks like he is, Richard Manuel is a beast.
I saw 'em in 74 in seattle coliseum with Dylan and they blew everyone, including him, away.
Richard Manuel, levon helm, that organ player, Danko -- they carried and made the great stuff. Looks like Robbie just posing, getting a free ride, yet Levon says all the songs ended up with his and Grossman's copyright. Those fkrs. I don't really know for sure what happened behind closed doors, but that's how it looks.
Robbie wrote this about Richard. We'll never know how it all went down in the end.
Damnit Richard, those pills were for all of us!
Talent flowing out FROM every musician !
What a song!!!!!!!!!!
robbie robertson did not write this song by himself...man...did he and the manager rip off the other fellows in the band
He wrote it about Richard Manuel's demons for the man to sing himself. By then Richard had pretty much lost his creative spark, having shown promise as a songwriter early-on. After Robertson left, The Band managed three more album with some good songs, although absent RR there were no originals from any of the remaining members. That alone speaks volumes.
robbie robertson did not write this song by himself...man...did he and the manager rip off the other fellows in the band
All time favorite band...👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Nice East Coast Swing Dance song, or could be an uptempo West Coast.
Robertsin wrote the lyrics and melodies of almost all of their hits, and his guitar playing is mean !
He didn't write everything on his own (but he took credit) but I will give him credit for being a great writer and a great guitarist. What he wasn't was a front man and a singer. What he tried to be was that not what he was. Without Levon, Danko, Richard, and Garth, Robbie would have been a footnote in history. In the end we still have the greatest band ever because they are "The Band".
33 years ago today we lost a great musician & singer to suicide. Rip Richard Manuel
Dose anyone out there agree that the Band were The BAND ?
Robbie thinks he all that.. Well guess what your not......... When the rest of the group is what made this band...Richard we miss u so very much THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR WONDERFUL SONGS
when you're high and get caught in the kitchen sneaking snacks @ :12
Lyrics delicious enough to have been written by the Master himself...
The band the greatest

This livin' alone would drive me crazy
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in
I'm gonna go down by the water
But I ain't gonna jump in, no, no
I'll just be lookin' for my maker
And I hear that that's where she's been?
Oh, out of nine lives, I spent seven

Bar Stools & Bus Stops. Fuck y'all. You have no idea about pain. Unless, you, of course are in pain. Then you know. Anyway, 1986ish, Orlando. Richard Manuel hung himself in a cheap motel. Maybe not cheap. Either way, he always seemed sad. That being said, old levon was his friend till the...
Damn Richard can sing!
This is the epitomy of all Americain music , Robertson composed it , and it would sound like mud without The Band playing it. "Masterclass " of composing
and playing , with the master piece , The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down , an historic metaphor ..................................
I thought it was the epitome of Canadian-American music
@Larry Holcomb From The Netherlands , epitome , sorry mate , come back to me when you learn the Dutch writing ?!
The great Richard Manuel . Too bad he and Garth Hudson were relegated to the background in The Last Waltz.
Wtf! How did they slip into that jazz bridge in the middle? Brillant!
There comes a point when you have to say the serenity prayer and let it go. They destroyed themselves with drugs and alcohol. RR is a bad mother fucker. He predicted everything that ended up happening. He is a very intelligent human being. He was kind of a bitch in some ways e.g. traveling with Scorsese solo while the rest of the band travelled alone. But those guys were doing mad heroin. Especially Danko.
If I am going out partying, I am chilling with Helm and Danko. If I want someone running my band definitely going with RR. He played the guitar daily for hours for a long time. He wrote several of the top 50 all time best rock and roll songs. He was an extraordinary talent. I am pretty sure he was the first Band Member that was in Ronnie Hawkins band when he was a goddamn teenager. I am pretty sure he is also the dude who initially connected with Dylan and wouldn’t tour with him unless his bandmates were included.
In regards to the LW. By far the best Rock and Roll doc. ever. It is so elegant. The stage, how they are all dressed. Also, to be honest its a film. Who would you rather look at. Garth Hudson or RR. RR looks fly as fuck in this movie.I would be narcissistic too if I was him back then too.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think Levon was owed a lot more money because pretty much all the songs were based on his stories and likeness. I don’t know what RR was thinking. That was definitely a dick move. If I was him I would have given each person in the band a million dollars each just out of love and respect. But I am sure shit gets crazy when you have that much fame and money.
Still sounds amazing
this must be played loud
EltonJohn
One of my favorite songs by The Band, if not my favorite. Can't help but notice all of those horns "playing themselves" during this song haha....
Richard the best of the best! And great drumming too!
every one one of them could sing...except robertson, oddly
I just love it when you say the band. and people look stupid at you because they just dont get it
Richard manuel looks so drunks ... Poor boy !
All I can say is "Wow". My new favorite song.
0:11 STONED OUT OF HIS GUORD
Richard Manuel was so drunk ...
6 bottles of Grand Marnier a day and many eight balls of blow and it was RIP Richard. What a shame. Ans then Danko with the heroin since 1968!!
Rick quit, but he quit too late.
Saw this movie in 8th grade at PCHS on a friday night.Totaly stoned!!!!!
I still like the band
Even in light of all the acclaim that came (rightfully) their way it is still just as rightfully said . . . what a marvelous, under-appreciated group of musicians this was. Every one of 'em was a superb musician their skill revealing itself within the context of tightly written and performed music. Their group ethos is the identity they embraced as opposed to showy displays of typical rock histrionics. Anyway, sadly missed. Cheers!
richard really nailed it, great tune by a great piano player. rip richard
Love this band ❤
levon was the band that man can sing and play the shit out of the drums
levon was the band that man can sing and play the shit out of the drums
levon was the band that man can sing and play the shit out of the drums
Oh Lord.... Richard was a tortured soul indeed. I wish he could have gotten some help. :(
hudson ruined the song, bad break
All i can say is WOW!
They used to turn Robbie Robertson's mic off. He couldn't sing worth a shit. True story!
Steve still trying to find a friend steve? Try starting with a pet, pick out a freshly euthanized cat from the shelter(best to avoid any chance of abandonement issues at this point), and if you manage to not fuck, dismember, or ? the carcass for an entire week, try 2 weeks with a dead puppy. Baby steps, steve
Don't know why, but I can't stand Robertson. He just looks narcissistic to me. LOVE Levon Helm and rest of The Band.
marthajf73 can't say for sure, but it might be due to you being a cunt and all. Ya might wanna try increasing your meds exponentially till the feeling disappears. Hope this helps!
"I just spent 60 days in the jailhouse, for the crime of having no dough. Now here I am back out on the street, for the crime of having nowhere to go."
Great lines
Love for Levon!
Man the amount of drugs that were consumed at this show........ I bet the audience did some too.
id rather have a bottla in front of me--tan a frontal lobotomy--Richard manuel
Man, Levon drums with such attitude on this. North America’s best band right here.
i aint lyin' you know ive spent 7, now how the world we gunna get to heaven loooooooord you dont know the shape im in.
RR is a fine guitar player.not a God. But very adequate. Levin Helm was a real musician,a true genius. Danko oh man gotta love Danko.
RR could also write. Better writer than a guitar player. Actually a really good writer. He just forget the name of the band.
Big crush on Robbie ,n the way he played guitar,,real name is Tina , robbie can't stop watching the last waltz "
When I was 14, I heisted a copy of the Stage Freight 33 1/3 LP from a store I worked in. 50 years later, do you think I have any guilt pangs? Hell, no! It's the Band, man!!
A band with an overdose of individual talent - somehow worked so well together without any one person outshining the other.
HaPpY BiRtHdAy Richard Manuel!
Robbie the best lip singer of all time can't sing a lick
These guys are INCREDIBLE. I am 67 yrs. young and remember I had an album from them in 71 before goin to RVN. Let a cousin of mine use them. How dumb was I? She ruined 24 of em. Semper4 Fi. Thanks for postin.
As I was. I left a collection and player with a friend at Ft Sill. Never saw either again.
Levon was one hell of a drummer, but the initials RR kept getting in the way
This is the best movie of any kind ever. IMO. The Band captured all the colors of our existence and played em back to so well. . Long may good people run. (If you want to debate "good" - that's another time and place..
Martin Scorsese cemented The Band into legendary status with the Last Waltz.....one of the very best concert movies I have seen. Jonathan Demme's Stop Making Sense is a close second with the Talking Head
**Talking HEADS, plural...*
I have the 3 best on Blu Ray. The Last Waltz, Stop Making Sense and Rust Never Sleeps.
Levron giving it some!
That plaid blazer is epic
Where’s my homies ?
0:14 who the fuck is T.J. Miller over here?
The Band and The Beatles were probably the best individual musicians and songwriters in the pop music world. Yet, they were strongest in a group scenario. This sum of the individual parts was far more interesting to themselves and to the millions of their fans. Never boring and they even amazed themselves. Ego's are usually tolerable over a long period of time. Just fall in line where you best fit in. The main destructive force is sharing MONEY (or lack there of). Drugs abuse is 2nd. Women are 3rd.

1:49 Richard smiles at Levon during the solo, & Levon smiles back at him. In The Last Waltz, you must seek the treasures in the edges, between the shots of RR histrionism.
Javier Sileno haha I like the last bit
