Band, The - Stage Fright Lyrics

Now deep in the heart of a lonely kid
Who suffered so much for what he did
They gave this ploughboy his fortune and fame
Since that day he ain't been the same

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
And he got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

I've got fire water right on my breath
And the doctor warned me I might catch a death
Said, "You can make it in your disguise
Just never show the fear that's in your eyes"

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
He got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

Now if he says that he's afraid
Take him at his word
And for the price that the poor boy has paid
He gets to sing just like a bird, oh, ooh ooh ooh

Your brow is sweatin' and your mouth gets dry
Fancy people go driftin' by
The moment of truth is right at hand
Just one more nightmare you can stand

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
And he got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again, hmm hmm
You wanna try it once again, hmm hmm
Please don't make him stop, hmm hmm
Let him take it from the top, hmm hmm
Let him start all over again

    RICKY <3 <3 3 <3

  8. R.... R....

A great song like this is a supreme validation for a life filled of pain and struggles. The body struggles but the spirit soars. RIP Rick Danko, you made all our lives better.

  10. R.... O....

3:01 - Love Robbie moving in with the swatting solo like he's protecting Rick from his stage-fright demons.

    R.... O....

I am assuming you are being sarcastic.

  11. L.... M....

I always see the comments about Rick and Levon. Garth gets his love too, and Robbie gets some praise, but I dont feel like he deserves as much hate as he gets. At least this far down the road.
But I am young, I dont know the full history of what happened. Regardless, these guys produced some of the best music ever made, and are still influencing people today.

  12. J.... F....

Rick Danko: Quit high school to play. Died of heart failure early. Funny guy

  13. o.... ....

This will always break my heart.

  14. K.... P....

What a performance, Rick as brilliant as ever

  15. p.... m....

Listen to his Irish brogue. Poor boy. If I could rob him of his poverty, and at the same time shut up the dude with the beard, and eat him, too, I'd be doing him both a favor. But why would I ever give? I hate him both.

  16. M.... G....

    Love this.

  17. U.... ....

I wish I could sing like this bassist

  18. P.... H....

Robbie had clearly gotten over HIS stage fright by this point. Flailing away like a character in kabuki theatre! Tragic Rick Danko always had that prarie boy sweetness. Bittersweet memories...

    P.... H....

    Insane Chemistry!!!

  19. G.... G....

Rick was a true artist! Plus he could "Party" with Keith'Ronnie Eric Clapton but to name a few

  20. M.... S....

they were called THE BAND for a very good reason.

  21. T.... S....

    Love Rick of course

  22. T.... T....

I don't mean to jump on the Robbie hate train, but I've always been annoyed at how he just seems so aware that a camera is filming him. He looks like an actor trying to seem edgy. Also he has too much makeup on for crying out loud!

    T.... T....

I agree. However, there is no denying his absolute masterful, bad ass guitar playing during this show.

    T.... T....

Im on that train. But I love the band

    T.... T....

    The scarf.

  23. R.... P....

There has been no band like The Band. Their music though nearly half a century sounds very fresh even now. Three talented main singers, exceptional songwriting, economic but brilliant lead guitar that makes its presence felt without ever being flashy and these talents are supplemented by out-of the world piano/keyboard work of Mr Hudson. Many bands have been given the credit for alternative country rock. But The Band has always been different and probably invented alt country rock genre without being credited for it. ( Uncle Tupelo has that tag). This is heart felt folk rock with country elements and rural based songwriting . It is essential to note how different it sounded from the common country rock of 60-70s ( The Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros, Poco and Eagles). The Band rarely used pedal steel guitars or banjo but included horns particularly in live shows .One can't help wondering if it is the musical genes of the Band that laid the seeds to alternative country three decades ahead of its time. Without The Band , Dylan would not have the same relevance and on their own as The Band, they are in the major league right up there with Beatles, Byrds, Beach Boys, The Stones , The Who, Eagles etc .

  24. M.... F....

    Rick owned this...period

  25. T.... M....

I'm old so give me a break but Rink Danko 😀was the greatest

  26. S.... D....

They all made up the 'BAND'...Rick, Robbie, Garth, Manuel, Levon...*!

  27. C.... S....

    What an amazing bass player

  28. K.... C....

Did they tune down a half step?

  29. S.... M....

Garth Hudson is a keyboardist's keyboardist!

  30. J.... S....

If there has ever been a more expertly shot film of a live performance, I haven't seen it. Scorses + The Band = Perfection

  31. F.... G....

One of my all time favourites...

  32. C.... A....

    awesome band

  33. C.... ....

Do they have any songs that don't suck? Worst crap I've ever heard!

  34. M.... A....

    Miss them...

  35. D.... M....

Levon is of course great. But Rick is just super cooooool.

  36. D.... P....

    RIP Rick😥

  37. T.... ....

    Danko. <3

  38. R.... M....

    Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!! Great!!!!!!!!

  39. E.... S....

    magic rick

  40. R.... ....

    Oh yeah. Pure magic. Right?

  41. J.... T....

Booked in to get a portrait of danko done one my back next month cant wait

  42. T.... T....

Fuck me and call me "Rosie." This is one of the best live renditions of one of the best bands of their times. WE'RE NOT FUCKING WORTHY. The Band slays all others!

  43. T.... L....

    Great Song!!

  44. J.... S....

This was the first song that got me hooked on the Band! If we could only turn that clock back!

  45. k.... ....

RIP Rick Danko. You left us far too soon

  46. s.... ....

how good is this band? damn

  47. t.... ....

when they tell you at the front of this movie to turn it up their not flaming kidding. otherwise you can't hear what rick & robbie are saying

  48. M.... H....

Rick Danko......the best !!!! I agree Marie he's just SO GOOD........first saw The Band at Watkins Glen ( WHOA.....what a show !! Only 600,000 ....more than Wood stock, with my 3 favorite bands of all time.). What a treat for just a 16 yr.old kid.
I could just go on & on & on

  49. m.... b....

i read a lot of shit spokenabout robbie. he wrote these songs an listen to him play. the best band

    m.... b....

    Chris Brannen don think so

    m.... b....

Watch that documentary. The reason they only have three original albums and the rest are covers is because Levon Helm wrote most of the songs and Robbie was getting most of the royalties so leave on decided to stop writing for him that's why from that point on it was the band sings your favorite songs

    m.... b....

Helm never wrote a song on his own in his life.  And whatever partial writing credits he received were dubious.  If you saw this documentary you know who Larry Campbell is.  Here's what Campbell said in 2012 in Americansongwriter :

"I didn’t know Levon in those years and I still don’t know Robbie and I’m hesitant to villainize either one of ’em in this thing because I don’t have the facts. What I can tell you is, I’ve written a few songs with Levon, and writing with Levon, my experience was, he wasn’t gonna do any labor where writing a song is concerned. The songs we’ve co-written, when it came down to constructing the song, that was my job. "

    m.... b....

Yes, Robbie wrote them. But imagine if he was a solo act and he was the only one that sang them. We would have nothing. Levon, Danko and Richard were the voice of The Band. Garth was the soul. Robbie played a mean guitar and wrote a lot of great songs. Robbie just forgot that they were "The Band", not Robbie and the Robbies.

    m.... b....

@Chris Brannen I love levon but if he wrote most of the songs how come he didn't write any great songs in the reincarnation of the Band without Robbie? And only wrote or part wrote a couple of songs on his solo albums?

  50. r.... d....

But when we get to the end...
He wants to start all over again!

  51. b.... ....

Thats what you call be'in in the spot light so pure

  52. G.... S....

One of my all time favs

  53. k.... ....

i believe that Rick Danko is sometimes afraid to sing in front of a crowd. Just sometimes !!

  54. w.... ....

This song was written about Van Morrison who had big problems revolving about stage fright.

    w.... ....

waddypete this song is written by Robbie about his stage fright

  55. z.... ....

    was that columbus ohio?

  56. B.... S....

I agree, 5 great musicians making truly great rock and roll....

  57. e.... z....

Van Morrison is Belfast Cowboy on 4 per cent pantomime re stage fright

    e.... z....

ed zachary that song is awesome. I love Van too

  58. n.... c....

the band. aptly named. i love them all. even robertson. but i love danko the most. every time i listen to ''it makes no difference' i melt.

    n.... c....

    Me too man!

  59. S.... B....

looking at all the comments, a lot of varying opinions about each member, but as the name says, The Band, and despite everything, they made wonderful music together!

  60. c.... ....

    Perfect. Rick Danko nailed this.

  61. W.... H....

This and "It Makes no Difference" give me goose bumps. Rick Danko makes me proud to be Canadian!

    W.... H....

William H. Baird that's true! AND don't forget William Shatner!

    W.... H....

Danko has one of those voices that just has a certain tone that has so much feeling and expression to it. Van Morrison is another for me.

    W.... H....

    American...... Danko for king......R.I.P.

    W.... H....

Many of my favs come from Canada.. The Band, The Guess Who.. Neil Young.. the list goes on, You should be proud!

  62. k.... ....

what amazes me about this "band" was what good musicians they were, like how did that happen, they came together, poor, etc, and were like at a level of super good say classic music artists....one day I compared kings of leon to them, and about after 5 mins, I realized these guys just had so much more than any band of todays era, simply amazing

    k.... ....

It's called touring and being friends with Bob Dylan

    k.... ....

Ronnie Hawkins whipped em into a crackerjack band, and then they played back up for the greatest songwriter ever. They learned and played together for 8 years before releasing an album, and when people have common interests and goals, those goals will manifest into talent, drive and passion. They had their contemporaries and each other to drive them to greatness. It's not really that miraculous, because people do it all the time.

    k.... ....

knightfive seems like the best we can aim for is to be like them!

  63. R.... M....

See folks there was a time that Canada had more to offer than Bieber and Nickelback .

    R.... M....

    how about "crash test dummies"

    R.... M....

    RUSH...

    R.... M....

Yeh. And there was a time that the US had more to offer than Miley, Australia had more to offer than Iggy, and the Caribbean had more to offer than Nicki. And Britain certainly had better to offer than that abomination, Little Mix.

    R.... M....

LOL, true so true; & glad you mentioned it +Chris Jenkins. Our Canadien Brothers and Sisters in music: Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Daniel Lanois, Rush, and Poet/Laureate Leonard Cohen, and several other great Canadien's Musicians i.e. Cowboy Junkies, Arcade Fire, Guess Who, and Celine Dion, just to name a few. Now when it comes to Canadien Actors/Actresses, imho more-so Canadien born Comedian's, I tilt my hat to my Canada Oh Canada...^^^ I don't and won't claim the Beeb as a legit musician, only a spoiled brat bubblegum yuppy who rode the coattails of Usher, and has flaunted being disrespectful as if it's a birth rite. Sorry no offense to anyone whose a beeb fan, I've got no love for the beeb, none.

    R.... M....

quick fact- Bieber and Richard Manuel are from the same town-Stratford Ontario

  64. M.... T....

God I love how Danko sings this. His voice, just incredible. Also, 'just never show the fear in your eyes' - to me that's telling of Manuel and Danko, but the latter especially. He hid his pain behind a good time, too willing to almost blissfully ignore whatever negative happened to him. His story, so sad.

  65. J.... ....

This music deserves to live in eternity. The Last Waltz was an amazing evening that produced some of my favorite music.

  66. b.... ....

The Band nothing more needs to be said

    b.... ....

Except... it's only a sentence fragment. It can never say ENOUGH. The Band WHAT?

    b.... ....

"Nothing more": there, I've said it.

  67. D.... B....

    good song

  68. r.... g....

It's great to notice the film crew in this, and Martin is hard at work in the background!

  69. S.... M....

    M.... a....

    ❤️ Rick Danko

  76. P.... H....

    Danko doing it.wow

  77. T.... ....

The Band and Scorsese created a brilliant film, but this 3 minutes and 45 seconds are pure perfection.
    The high-water mark for music.

    T.... ....

He gets to sing just like a bird - gives me shivers, it's so good.  What I love about Rick, is it is ALL about the song.

    T.... ....

According to Robertson there are chandeliers here Scorsese acquired from Gone With the Wind for an idea on how much he put into staging this.

  78. S.... F....

is this song about Van Morrison

    S.... F....

Stink Fistula no Robbie Wrote it about his stage fright

  79. R.... L....

Rick has real emotions,so many 'artists"lack: he's a REAL MAN.Fuck, such a loss, and his voice rambles on in my head

  80. j.... ....

Robbie with his patented rippin' on the Telecaster (correction: bronze coated Strat!) at the 3:00 min. mark to start the outtro. The stereo panning follows the video as it shifts from left to right.

    j.... ....

+jfiddude Looks like a Strat to me

    j.... ....

oops exactly, not his famous tele but the the bronze Strat , dipped it in molten bronze , unique! In my opinion someone made a bad call editing Garth show stopping keyboard solo just to save a few seconds. ( At 2:05 ) This song, like 'Such A Night' was one of the most energetic songs of the entire show IMO. Time to break out the unedited version. Viva Garth Hudson!

  81. t.... m....

    Danko is best

  82. 2.... M....

Many have said The Band was very fortunate to have a songwriter like Robbie. True. However, Robbie was so fortunate to have Rick, Richard and Levon to get it all across. As someone below said, "Rick owned this." True.

    2.... M....

    BULLSHIT.

    2.... M....

    Why bs?

    2.... M....

ohh I was only responding to the claim that...if you write a song, you get the credit.  not always true. it's been untrue more times than we'd even believe. that's all I meant. and yes, Robbie WAS fortunate to have levon. I knew him, and was told...he DID add to many songs that he did NOT get credit for.  and he added to them ...NOT in a small way.

    2.... M....

Yeah, and Robbie couldn't sing a lick. They always turned off his mic. Funny he wrote all the songs and made all the money.

    2.... M....

Robbie wrote the songs for the rest of the band to sing, because they each had their own talents. It just so happened that Robbie and Garth didn't really sing, but probably made the most musical contribution to the group.

  83. C.... ....

Rest in peace Rick Danko, thanks for all the great music and times!

    C.... ....

HE GOT CAUGHT IN THE SPOTLIGHT ! RIP ricky

  84. M.... S....

RIck Danko is such a beast! Love this guy. My favorite member of the band, although it is very hard to choose one cause they all have moments of genius all their own. Just something about that Ricky though!

  85. K.... ....

    this song speaks to me

  86. M.... F....

I love Rick Danko so much I don't have the words.

    M.... F....

i smoked a joint with him on South St Philadelphia 1983 when he played Stars night club

    M.... F....

    No ya' didn't.

    M.... F....

yeah me & my buddys were wearing Tony Marts tee shirts the doorman let us in. Rick & Levon said we were OK. Once we got in they had sandwiches & cold Bud's. Somebody lit a joint and passed with Rick Danko. No lie we were there !!! Rick was the best !!!!!!

    M.... F....

Haha..jes' givin' ya' the business...haha. Where I live, an ongoing gag, 'I got laid last night'...'No ya didn't'...haha..just forgot where i was hehehe...

    M.... F....

Those will do for now Marie Fontaine, because I (think) I feel the same:)

  87. M.... A....

It doesn't get any better than this.

  88. s.... H....

    groovey MAN...!

  89. S.... B....

Sorry for talkin so much . xo

  90. J.... H....

the speed is a bit fast on this

  91. W.... !....

    HERE ARE THE LYRICS...
Now deep in the heart of a lonely kid
Who suffered so much for what he did,
They gave this poor boy his fortune and fame,
Since that day he ain't been the same.

And he got caught in the spotlight,
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again.

I've got fire water right on my breath

And he got caught in the spotlight,
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again.

    No, no, no
    Let's not make him stop,
Just let him take it from the top,

Songwriters: ROBERTSON, ROBBIE, et al (?)

    W.... !....

Worth noting on the album he sings "plow boy" rather than "poor boy".  I like poor boy better though.

    W.... !....

@Mikael Hållander how do you know that

    W.... !....

@WKL2 !  There were charges that Robertson overstated his role by guess who?  Levon Helm.  Did anyone else make that charge?  Nope. My take was Helm was jealous of Robertson.  And I have read his book too.

    W.... !....

it's like any friendships or sibling relationships and especially among talented creative slightly crazy in a good way people there will be fighting. We get to enjoy the fruits of their labors in any case.

    WKL2 ! I'm

  92. R.... H....

What a talent! All you bass players out there, try and play this part ALONG with singing it. Not easy to do... R.I.P RD

    R.... H....

ya, done did that~~i grew up with the affliction and being in the spotlight was a nighmare~~this is the first tune I covered as the bassist~~twas quite the trick, but we ROCKED IT~~and this opened the door to comfort in the light

  93. B.... ....

I love you Rich!! Hope you and God come up with some good ones..I want to hear em'

  94. S.... G....

that bieber thing, and the like (the madness of the Mob) that shows more about them

  95. S.... G....

thank god there are some certainties in Life.............xo

  96. A.... ....

Thank you, Canada, for my all-time fave band.

    A.... ....

You're quite welcome..speak for myself I'm proud of the band

  97. M.... R....

    Thanks, Oono.

Great stuff. The way he brought his voice up for the last chorus always sticks with me. He sounds youthful and vulnerable when it breaks and it's just perfect.

  98. M.... R....

I love the way Rick's voice seems to nearly crack at 'Stage' in the last chorus.

    A brilliant song.
