Band, The - Blind Willie McTell Lyrics

Seen the arrow on the door post saying "This land is condemned"
All the way from New Orleans to Jerusalem
I traveled through East Texas where many martyrs fell
And I know one thing, nobody can sing them blues like Blind Willie McTell

Well, I heard the hoot-owl singing as they were taking down the tents
The stars above all the barren trees were his only audience
Yeah, them charcoal gypsy maidens can strut their feathers well
And I know one thing, nobody can sing them blues like Blind Willie McTell

See them big plantations a-burning, can't you hear the cracking of the whips
Smell that sweet magnolia blossom blooming, see the ghosts of the slavery ships
Well, I can hear them tribes a-moanin', I can hear the undertaker's bell
And I know one thing, nobody can sing them blues like Blind Willie McTell

There's a woman she's standing by the river, she is with some fine young handsome man
See he's all dressed just like a squire, he's got bootleg whiskey in his hand
Yeah, there's a chain-gang out on the highway and I can hear them rebels yell
And I know one thing, nobody can sing them blues like Blind Willie McTell

God, oh God is in Heaven and we all want what is His
But the power and greed, the corruptible seed seems to be all that there is
Hey, hey, I'm a-gazing out the window of the St. James Hotel
And I know one thing, nobody can sing them blues like Blind Willie McTell
Hey, hey, I know one thing, nobody can sing them blues like Blind Willie McTell

Band, The Blind Willie McTell Comments
  1. T.... Q....

Nobody Sings like Blind Willie McTell!

  2. c.... ....

Rick Danko WAS The Band. As was Robbie and Levon...Garth and Richard...what an incredible band.

  3. A.... W....

a haunting arrangement & pure musical genius imo.

  4. M.... D....

    mesmerizing

  5. U.... P....

the band lo hace mil veces mejor que Dylan

  6. R.... A....

The Band aperfeiçoou esta sensacional musica do gênio Bob Dylan

  7. L.... ....

The version by Lil' Wayne featuring One Direction is better than this and Dylan's versions.

  8. d.... ....

Thanks for posting this. Much respect.

  9. N.... B....

This song is awesome but Blind Willie McTell could sing it better.

  10. R.... ....

    Love it! Love Dylan's more.

  11. R.... A....

Sensacional esta versão do grupo THE BAND que lamentavelmente se desfez cedo demais. Coisas boas duram pouco

  12. S.... V....

Wait who the fuck is singing and this is solo Levon not the band wtf

  13. m.... r....

only dylan could rival this version by the band

  14. T.... B....

Dylan must have been on drugs to shelve this song. DOH!!

    T.... B....

I know. It is one of my favourite Dylan songs.

  15. S.... W....

Nobody sings like Rick Richard and levon God bless them they were my childhood heroes

  16. t.... j....

really very good stuff for the band considering its ninety three and their best days were probably done and over I like this one

    t.... j....

I always viewed this as their farewell album, not bad for a band that was considered a has been when it was released.

  17. I.... H....

    Sam pomailim.Namo nikam zamudili.Pitajte Nensi.Ona zna.

  18. b.... ....

I've listened to a few version with Dylan's. Too bad you can only understand some of his lyrics, harmonica is out of key on one, guitar overbearing and way too strummy on another.  I'm still looking for his"way better" version.

  19. b.... ....

Dylan can't touch Geeshie Wiley's Last Kind Words

  20. D.... S....

Mighty fine version - if not the best

  21. S.... B....

Nadie mejor que The band para interpretar esta canción de Dylan, en cuya composición trabajaron.

  22. H.... W....

    Awesome the band version.

  23. S.... K....

Check out Roger Chapman's cover of this.

  24. D.... T....

Rick Danko, Levon, Richard Manuel, all supurb vocalists. The Band were a once in a lifetime masterful ensemble of talent.

    D.... T....

    no doubt about it

    D.... T....

one of the greatest bands to ever set foot on a stage

  25. K.... P....

Is there a better rhythm section than Danko/Helm?

  26. d.... d....

I like this version - I'd seen them do it live and it was a heavy groove - very cool

  27. W.... R....

Truly this is one of the finest studio recordings ever by the Band. Levon sho' plays down them rhythms and is a one-man rhythm section almost. So funky, such a commanding tribute to Blind Willie McTell.

  28. D.... M....

    https://youtu.be/zgwICFLB8Mo

  29. E.... ....

This song wasnt even Dylan's. Dylan dared to sing it but was not his originally

    E.... ....

Epuka Actually it is his song. Get your facts straight https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Willie_McTell_(song)

    E.... ....

Still, one of the most beautiful tunes ever .....

    E.... ....

What the hell are you talking about ?? before putting up "facts" - check if they really are facts.

  30. j.... d....

id rather just listen to blind willie mctell

  31. C.... V....

Brilliant wauwwwww this is great love it.

  32. Z.... ....

    Danko ❤

    Z.... ....

Love Rick Danko. Such a great personality and voice. Fragile and strong at the same time

  33. T.... B....

danko, Helm awesome voices, RIP boys!

  34. S.... e....

this version is so far supierior to bub dylan , it' s no comparison

    S.... e....

    bub dunnit butter

  35. D.... A....

Dylan's is haunting and this one , with all due respect to my favorite band , is not

  36. R.... S....

Both Danko and Helm sound great vocally. I think the song is missing Robbie more than it misses Dylan. Also, the voice of the lead guitar is a non event in this version.

    R.... S....

my opinion of robertsons is not good. But they coulda put some of Levons mandolin talent in here....that may have made it perfect.

  37. M.... S....

nice ensemble version, but nobody sings blind willie mctell like dylan

    M.... S....

+Oded Avraham Thanks for responding brotha. I didn't realize that Mark left in the middle of production. An interesting tidbit for sure. While in the recording process it maybe difficult to decide on what's a gem and what needs left off, but in retrospect the Dylan version definitely had major potential.

    M.... S....

amen bob sings the song like he means it this version is nice but its as if they dont even know who they are singing about

    M.... S....

Both versions are great for different reasons

    M.... S....

@John Matthew Boyle There is a third version: Mick Taylor's who was the guitarist on Dylan's version. Mick's version is great as well with his superb guitar playing and nice vocal performance.

    M.... S....

    Love all their music

  38. J.... F....

    Art is dope !!

    J.... F....

It sure is! It's a painting by Peter Max of The Band's house, Big Pink, in West Saugerties, New York.

    J.... F....

    Art is Hope!

  39. D.... ....

Not bad at all but the magic from their early albums is gone.

  40. P.... ....

Not bad at all - but you should check out Roger Chapman's rendering of this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO96eql_zkI

  41. M.... F....

Check out this New Orleans song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrB6KYOiFSY

  42. D.... O....

    Fuck yes

  43. s.... ....

and i know one thing, nobody can sing like the late levon helm...

    s.... ....

wish I could unsee this comment. Saw The Last Waltz two years ago. In my mind he's still at his prime. That's how deceivingly good the video quality was. My favourite song : the night they drove old dixie down

    s.... ....

    Except Ricky Danko

    s.... ....

The live show, The Living room tapes or whatever it was dubbed, of Rick and Levon that's here on youtube has got to be one of the best shows I've ever heard. Both of them were on fire that night.

    s.... ....

    Or the late Rick Danko!

  44. M.... H....

Bob Dylan's version is highly superior to this one, with all due respect to The Band. I don't care how many non-believers say that he can't sing, Dylan's delivery of the lyrics  nearly moves me to tears and ultimately, that's what makes him an exceptionally good singer.

    M.... H....

+ParagliderCollapse I'm a woman, actually and I definitely respect your opinion.

    M.... H....

listen to blind willie mctell he puts both to shame

    M.... H....

    Lo Life.

    I emend your statement -
'Listen to blind willie mctell puts both to shame.'

    M.... H....

The emotion in his voice and his timing are second to none, amazing voice, Dylan's is better by far

    M.... H....

    The Band are superior.

  45. j.... x....

This is good, just not like Dylan's (and his solo piano)..

  46. h.... ....

Not even close to Dylan's original.

  47. J.... B....

    times gone bye

  48. b.... ....

thru the years Rick's voice sweetened.

  49. 3.... ....

Different style than Dylan's....I like it...the music stands out more. The contrast between Rick and Levon is enjoyable :)

  50. G.... M....

not even close to the greatness of bob dylan's original take

    G.... M....

In this case it is about emotion. Nobody does Dylan like Dylan.

    G.... M....

    Chris Cusano -

    G.... M....

Georgios do have the link to the piano one? I’ve been looking for 30 minutes

    G.... M....

@Chelesa Piker if you still haven't found it, it's on the bootleg series volume 3. Only stream I could find of it is on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/179637318

    G.... M....

The Band are far superior to Dylan. Bob should be the one who feels humbled by the fact he was lucky enough to have the finest musicians behind him.

  51. 1.... ....

does anyone have the rick danko solo acoustic version of this??

    1.... ....

    yep,and I love it.Have it on vinyl

    1.... ....

    Think it's on Spotify.

  52. m.... ....

Guys this is perfect, I love the feeling of your cover.

    m.... ....

Just sending the regards to Garth Hudson and the others who played with Levon Helm & Rick Danko here ; (Robbie Robertson wasn't part of this 3rd regrouping). ...  RIP Levon & Rick or wherever you might be touring.

  53. T.... ....

The drums on this song are kicking so hard through my headphones, I love it

    T.... ....

@datdude5620 ho you are wrigth !!as i  reeded your comment, the drum has been starting!!that 's so rith!!

    T.... ....
