Baez, Joan - Whistle Down The Wind Lyrics

I grew up here all of my life
But I dreamed someday I'd go
Where the blue-eyed girls
And the red guitars
And the naked rivers flow

I'm not all I thought I'd be
I've always stayed around
I've been as far as Mercy and Grand
Frozen to the ground

I can't stay here
And I'm scared to leave
So kiss me once and then
I'll go to hell
I might as well be
Whistlin' down the wind

The bus is at the corner
The clock on the wall
Broken down windmill
There ain't no wind at all

And I yelled and I cursed
If I stay here I'll rust
I'm stuck like a shipwreck
Out here in the dust

The sky is red
And the world is on fire
And the corn is taller than me
And the dog is tied to a wagon of rain
And the road is wet as the sea

Sometimes the music from a dance
Will carry across the plains
The places that I'm dreaming of
Dream only of your face

There are places where they never sleep
And the circus never ends

So I will take the Marleybone coach
And be whistlin' down the wind
So I will take the Marleybone coach
And be whistlin' down the wind

Not only a song that touches the soul but a rendition by a great singer who manages 78 year old vocal cords with such tenacity. I'm so touched by Joan's version. Brava, great lady. Thank you.

I'm great fun Joan Baez, I've been listening for years, I have almost all of her albums ... Still I think there is a time when the singer needs to withdraw. I listened to some of her recordings last year live and it sounded terrible. It is true that her voice is already very old and exhausted. This is a studio record of the album that is maximally refined, but I can not even think how this sounds live. I am not malicious and because of that I sincerely tell her:
"Miss Baez, you sang in your beautiful voice and recorded so many beautiful songs that were celebrated by many generations of years. But the year can not be erased. That's why I advise you it's time to get out of concerts where you sing live. You do not need it! "Thank you

You touched my young soul so many years ago.... now you still touch my "young" soul....

  13. E.... ....

I saw her first in Birmingham Alabama in 1963 at Miles College. Then again in Nashville where I was fortunate enough in 1968 to be allowed into a recording session at Columbia Records and even made a comment on whether I liked a song she was debating including in the album (Jolie Blond). Then again at Bradley's Barn in Nashville where my daughter (age 9) and I were allowed into the studio session. She came over to where I was sitting with my daughter Joan (named after her of course) and gave my Joan a hard boiled egg, and told her what a good and quiet little girl she was. Then, this past September 26th, I went with the same daughter, now 54, to Red Bank NJ to listen to what Joan Baez says will be her last tour. Wonderful concert with her son Gabe. Now look lady Joan. You are way too young to stay away from the road too long. I love you, same as when I visited a friend's house early in 1961 and he said "LIsten to this" and plunked the needle down onto "Lily of the West." I hope you live longer than your mom and then some..

  14. J.... M....

That fresh, young voice has matured like a fine wine.

  15. S.... K....

No words can tell this voice. Such an overwhelming beauty...

  16. m.... f....

her covers have always been better than the originals. no offence to the equally great artists she admires enough to cover. i own the tom waits album this is off of and it never ranked very high for me -- then the legendary joan baez comes along and polishes it up. perhaps its her beautiful voice.

  17. B.... S....

Quand j écoute tes chansons tes musique que du bonheurs

  18. M.... P....

certainly one of her most moving, touching album among many! I can say that Joan Baez is my light when all around me is dark and sad. She is always by my side every time I feel weak and she is my courage when I doubt and feel like giving up. She will always accompany me as she has always accompanied me since I am 15 yo. She is much more than a legend because she is real. Certainly the image I have of her hasn't much to see with the image she has of herself, but I am sure she doesn't really get how important she is in so many people lives. Thank you for being you and thank you for your mistakes too because you helped me to build myself with my own mistakes.

    M.... P....

She has been tearing up my heart to shreds and putting it back time and again..since i was very young.love is just a four letter word.for Joan

  19. J.... U....

I heard Joan, sing this song, in Paris in June, I was in the front row, her voice is as good as ever. The show was a the culmination of a lifetime ambition to see her “ live” and it was fantastic! I been in Love with her, since the early 1960s she has given people the World over so much pleasure, the voice of an Angel, Social Activist, she such a great credit to her Country. God Bless You and keep you.

  20. S.... C....

I've been in Love with this Woman, seems for my whole life. Her voice has always touched my soul. She has only got more Beautiful with age, and her voice has only mellowed with the years. Just a Beautiful CD Joan

  21. F.... K....

Can't get enough of this song...Absolutely love it!

  22. C.... A....

I LOVE HER but just curious. Why doesn't she have that much original material and mostly covers?

  23. C.... C....

  26. J.... U....

I have just achieved my lifetimes ambition to see this Lady, who is a living legend.
It was in Paris on the 5th June. Ah unrequited love !!!! I think that she should have shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Bob Dylan.
This lady has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard, sung songs with such empathy and feeling, and generally led a beautiful, gentle life.
She has given pleasure to untold millions of people. God Bless You and keep you Joan.

    J.... U....

James Unsworth Very well said. She was born the same year I was and in my youth she was my hero. I had every album she ever made.

    Good old times

  38. A.... ....

We keep coming. We're the people that live. They can't wipe us out, they can't lick us. We'll go on forever, cos we're The People.
    is that a Theremin?
I went and got myself a moog Theremini (soes I could be the life of the party), but I need to practice, it needs to be calibrated and everything is so jammed in here between books and musical instruments, you need like at least 5 feet clarance to calibrate it.

    A.... ....

Is it a Theremin? At first thought it was a well played saw :-)

  39. R.... ....

Joan Baez: Born: January 9, 1941 (age 77), Still too young to retire!

  40. j.... ....

    The legend lives on.

  41. t.... f....

    j'adore .. thankful!!!

  44. m.... m....

    BRAVO, Joan!!!!Great song!

  45. S.... ....

This is fine, but check out Valerie Carter's version. It exemplifies the emotions and the great song writing  of Tom Waits ( and I think his wife ?) when he , they,  wrote this song. Please check out Valerie Carter's version. It is beautiful and haunting.

    S.... ....

Stargazer, Agreed! I did check it out; Valerie sang the *song*, not just the words...

    S.... ....

Didn't I tell you. If you don't know Valerie Carter, you should. When she died Spring 2017, Jackson Browne went public and said that yes, it was for her that he wrote the song ( "That Girl Could Sing") and that he had loved her for years ( never worked out but they remained friends for life ). For many ,many years it was thought that it was Joni Mitchell or Laura Nyro in the song, but it was Valerie..She sang backup for Jackson and a lot for James Taylor . Sang with Linda Ronstadt and many others. Sang the greatest version "Oooh Child". And get this , Jackson sang backup for her on " Loves Needs A Heart ".

    S.... ....

Well, Stargazer, thank you for introducing me to Valerie Carter, and thank you for the biographical info. Like Eva Cassidy, gone too soon.

    S.... ....

You're welcome. I'm glad to be the informant .

  46. a.... b....

    Bem vinda. Saudades dessa voz.

  47. D.... H....

Sung beautifully, Joan's voice is triumphant... however, to me, this song calls for a defeated voice, an off-tune piano, and a singer who's beyond lost. I want dust and rain from this song! Shouldn't be beautiful.

    D.... H....

Try Valerie Carter, who for me, does the definitive version of this song. Her exquisite voice marries beauty and vulnerability. She's backed by accordion, violin and piano for an utterly heartbreaking effect. It's a hidden track on one of her solo albums. I've seen it posted on YT also. Cheers.

    D.... H....

well, here is the song's author: https://youtu.be/YpnnMb1WtZM

  48. P.... R....

I like Joan, but nobody holds a candle to Tom Waits doing this, his song.

  49. D.... P....

NOUS avons grand besoin.. de votre voix et paix

  50. C.... W....

    She can do no wrong.

  51. M.... A....

What is this merde? I want the Andrew Lloyd Webber original theme!

  52. M.... ....

Toujours autant d'émotion à l'écoute de vos textes et de votre voix. Merci Madame !

  53. S.... V....

    Une icône !

  54. d.... b....

good to have u back, girl! lovely//great cd cover too

  55. p.... ....

I'm happy to see Joan is continuing to cover Waits, one of the great American poets!

    p.... ....

Thank you for posting about the connection between two amazing artists...I've never before encountered anyone who noticed!

  56. C.... W....

Absolutely Beautiful, looking forward to seeing Joan in Birmingham and London!

  57. J.... H....

Her voice is clear - it may have lost a few notes but not the old magic. Note all the little gracenotes, what belcanto singers call gruppetti and so on - I long for march 2 (Stockholm)

  58. a.... ....

Now Joan Baez sings in a country & western style. I prefer her early singing style.

    a.... ....

She did a country album in the late 60s

    a.... ....

    Is anyone supposed to care?

    a.... ....

country and western? this is a Tom Waits cover...Americana/Folk Pure Joan. She's adapted her style to her aging voice. To bad we can't all stay forever young. But she's no less beautiful than she's ever been. I applaud her grace and beauty.

  59. M.... A....

    So perfectly beautiful.

  60. B.... H....

Absolutely beautiful. Anything she has lost in the upper range is more than made up with the richness and expressiveness of her middle and lower ranges.
