Baez, Joan - Farewell, Angelina Lyrics

Farewell, Angelina
The bells of the crown
Are being stolen by bandits
I must follow the sound.
The triangle tingles
And the trumpets play slow.
Farewell, Angelina
The sky is on fire
And I must go.

There's no need for anger
There's no need for blame.
There's nothing to prove
Everything's still the same.
Just a table standing empty
By the edge of the sea means
Farewell, Angelina
The sky is trembling
And I must leave.

The jack and the queen
Have forsake the courtyard.
Fifty-two gypsies
Now file past the guards
In the space where the deuce
And the ace once ran wild
Farewell, Angelina
The sky is falling
I'll see you in a while.

See the cross-eyed pirates sitting
Perched in the sun
Shooting tin cans
With a sawed-off shotgun.
And the neighobrs they clap
And they cheer with each blast.
Farewell, Angelina
The sky's changing color
And I must leave fast

King Kong, little elves
On the rooftops they dance
Valentino-type tangos
While the makeup man's hands
Shut the eyes of the dead
Not to embarrass anyone.
But Farewell, Angelina
The sky's embarrassed
And I must be gone.

The machine guns are roaring
The puppets heave rocks
And fiends nail time bombs
To the hands of the clocks.
Call me any name you like
I will never deny it,
But Farewell, Angelina
The sky is erupting
I must go where it's quiet.

I came here after searching for Nana Mouskouri's French version which is the one I first heard many, many years ago (My mom was a big Mouskouri fan)... I thought I'd understand the meaning of the song better in it's original english version. Well, I have to say: no, I don't. I still think it's a very nice song, I really enjoy having discovered the original but, I still haven't got a clue what it means...

Out of curiosity, why the "" around their names? We all know Dylan was born Zimmerman and Baez is Joan's name, period.

  6. I.... T....

This song, and Blind Willie McTell, are my two favourite Dylan compositions. How ironic that he didn't think either was good enough to include on any album.

I will never set foot again in my lifetime in the U. S. A. thanks to Mark Fuckerberg, the Evangelicals know-it-alls of monetizing everyone and everything with God on their side and their pseudo Russian/Chinese surveillance state. Not that they would ever want me to. God knows Americans dislike poor people more than anything. And G.d bless us all, if it be His will.

I learned this song When I was 8 along with so many others by JB she was my unique music and singing teacher, and when I found out that my voice was really similar to hers, I felt so happy and proud! I went to some of her concerts here in Italy...When I want to relax and feel good I still join her while I'm listening to her!

That always makes me think Holocaust :(

It seems so obvious now that youve mentioned it. Ill incorporate that into the little movie that plays in my head when i hear this song. Thank you sir!

Thanks so much for this Carl. She had such a delicate yet clear and solid voice. The world is better when we take the time to listen to beautiful folk songs. 👍

  35. R.... C....

Wonderful song, wonderful singer, one hell of a human being..

    R.... C....

Except for being a bad wife and negligent mother she was pretty great i guess.

    R.... C....

Well, I wouldn't know about that. Never married her, never had children with her. I was referring more to her fight for human rights. We all speak out of our own experience, don't we?

  36. M.... R....

The lyrics in this song is worth the Nobel Price. And the voice of Joan Baez the Polar Music Price!

    H.... J....

Absolutely agree, Hans - and yet Dylan didn't think it good enough to include on an album. It was an outtake from Bringing It All Back Home in 1965.

No point in searching the meaning of the words. It's probably acid type poetry. It doesn't matter. She is the, or one of the most loved singers in my life. The other is Billy Holiday :)
