Bad Religion - Struck A Nerve Lyrics
There's an old man on a city bus
Holding a candy cane
And it isn't even christmas
He see's a note in the obituary
That his last friend has died
To his overweight mother in the cold
As they go to shop for cigarettes
And she spends her last dollar
On a bottle of vodka for tonight
And I guess it struck a nerve
Like I had to squint my eyes
You can never get out
Of the line of sight
Like a barren winter day
Or a patch of unburned green
I guess it struck a nerve
Every day I wander
In negative disposition
As I'm bombarded by superlatives
Realizing very well that I am not alone
Introverted
I look to tomorrow for salvation
But I'm thinking altruistically
And a wave of overwhelming doubt
Turns me to stone
And I guess it struck a nerve
Sent a murmur to my heart
We just haven't got time
To crack the maze
Like a magic speeding clock
Or a cancer in our cells
A collision in the dark
I guess it struck a nerve
I try to close my eyes
But I cannot ignore the stimuli
If theres a purpose for us all
It remains a secret to me
Don't ask me to justify my life

Wow, I wasn't expecting that woman. This is definitely something different from Bad Religion. And it's incredible
This sounds great, some of the other versions on YouTube sound like they’re playing underwater.

I Walked into a church in my BR shirt 🤘🏼👍🏼
This album and this song introduced me to BR back in 93 and I have not stopped listening to this amazing band .
🍻
who knew that the girl from concrete blonde is doing the backup vocals here
Been listening for 27 years have to say still my favorite song of all time
Coming to Chicago on August 9th
Yeuteamo
🔥🔥🔥
I consider myself a huge Bad Religion fan. I have 11 of their albums. But this is one of the few that slipped by me... and this song is incredible.
Yeuteamo
Song did its job...it struck a nerve.
Nah ...bad religion is much loved. Maybe Greg's choices weren't what real fans thought
My name is Frank and I stink
God I love this album, pun intended..
I remember listening to this song for the first time, 10 years ago. Since this time, I always felt nostaligic while listening it .
This track is unique in Bad Religion's work.
Muy buena banda
i once was homeless my favorite song cause i understand the complexities of societies fuck the homeless
Que música foda!
[Verse 1]
There's an old man on a city bus holding a candy cane
And it isn't even Christmas
He sees a note in the obituary that his last friend has died
There's an infant clinging to his overweight mother in the cold
As they go to shop for cigarettes
As she spends her last dollar on a bottle of vodka for tonight
[Chorus]
And I guess it struck a nerve
Like I had to squint my eyes
You can never get out of the line of sight
Like a barren winter day
Or a patch of unburned green
Like a tragic real dream
I guess it struck a nerve
[Verse 2]
Every day I wander in negative disposition
As I'm bombarded by superlatives
Realizing very well that I am not alone
Introverted I look to tomorrow for salvation
But I'm thinking altruistically
And a wave of overwhelming doubt turns me to stone
[Chorus]
And I guess it struck a nerve
Sent a murmur through my heart
We just haven't got time to crack the maze
Like a magic speeding clock
Or a cancer in our cells
A collision in the dark
I guess it struck a nerve
[Verse 3]
I try to close my eyes
But I cannot ignore the stimuli
If there's a purpose for us all
It remains a secret to me
Don't ask me to justify my life
[Chorus]
Cause I guess it struck a nerve
Like I had to squint my eyes
You can never get out of the line of sight
Like a magic speeding clock
Or a cancer in our cells
A collision in the dark
I guess it struck a nerve
Thank´s my friend!
Great. Fucking. Song.
My favourite BR song so far. I can't get enough of it.
So beautiful, so deep, I love it so much. ♥
That guitar solo between 2:05 and 2:30 is epic
Uggh, pitched up version...
a collision in the dark
favorite band since i was 14 im 35 now.
i fell you
Mike Lawrence same bro
Exactly the same here!
Since 15 I am 41 now 🤘🏼
Since I´m 15 and I´m 44 now ;)
I've always though of this song when I listen to Bill Hicks do his bit about witnessing "hardcore pockets of humanity". The world is so fucking weird and surreal and disgusting sometimes it's overwhelming. Like even going to the grocery store now makes me want to throw up.
Too much raw humanity at once, man.
Me too. You're not the only one.
Thought*
I think about this all the time, but I really like the way you phrased it. It's rather profound for me, because I feel like I've had this exact visceral thought before, but I'm hearing it in someone else's words lol.
best punk song ever award--brilliant genius beautiful and I could fly rather than dance to this one
best punk song, ever...brilliant, beautiful, rocks so fine I'd rather take off like turbo-jet than dance
One or the best songs
I still play this song at the bar all the time and people that have never heard of BR Like this song.
Their last masterpiece
Debatable
Indeed, but that's just my opinion..
I like most of their LP's after that but I would not rate them as masterpieces..
cybernaut667 not even close. true north is epic and they are not done yet. I seen them two weeks ago and they still sound amazing.
Hell fucking NO! Stranger than fiction is a great great great album, the process of belief was not to be fucked with either. True North shows dedication and it's pretty good too.
Process of belief and Stranger than fiction are better than this one. You can judge me, i dont care xD
"WACHO!" (cualquier argentinx va a enteder)
Luciano de Funeral Argentino/Uruguayo! aguante BR bo!
It applies now and forever and should be the theme music of every "news" broadcast. Stuff that in your commercials you monster corporate media shitheads!
The most underrated song of Bad Religion's entire catalog. It's got a different sound than anything else they did. This was one of their songs that transcend their genre and anyone who appreciates good music should like this song.
dru petey Youre damn right!! I love it. Its got that folky Irish-like touch
dru petey my personal fave
Totalmente de acuerdo.
Absolutely. It's a classic
Agreed.
I can never understand what Greg shouts before the guitar solos in the songs... "Watch out"?
he's saying "one-two"
Mathew Wood it's not one two it's wancho but you have to ask them what means (it's a made up word) it's used in a few songs.
It's "One-Two" but honestly it sounds like "WATTO", the slave owner of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
Couldn't argue that!
✊🏻
This song changed my life when I was young, been a massive fan of them since, it's hard to choose a favorite bad religion album, let alone a favorite song, but if I had to choose this is always the one I come back to. Crazy how much this applies to the world today compared to the time it was created
you're just much older..the world sucks
I feel you on that dude. Same for me. My life changed when I discovered Bad Religion.
BillieJoesAngel Same here. I was 12 or 13 when this album came out and it was my introduction to BR and I was floored. Then I researched their previous albums and they soon became my favorite band. 23 years later and they still are. I have a lot of tattoos but my only 'band' tattoo is the Against the Grain logo.
it struck a neeeeeerve! love that backup vocal. most underappreciated br song. buried on a meh album. quite possibly the only punk song with 2 guitar solos
+Louie Salerno Your high school clique is hardly a valid sample for you to form such a strong opinion on (most underappreciated br song), and (quite possibly the only punk song with 2 guitar solos) is just so ridiculous a statement, it doesn't merit argumentation.
By allow I meant: words to leave your head without you granting any consideration to them.
We clear now?
u win. 5 useless pts for u. but before u pick up ur medal, name me another punk song with 2 guitar solos. and, no, the same solo repeated later in the song doesn't count
It's not meh at all. A lot of really strong songwriting on this album. Skyscraper for example
Johnette Napatilano has one of the best voices, I love Concrete Blonde as well.
A "meh album"? This guy lol...
Sitting here watching people eat there meals and i wonder
More applicable now than in the 1990's when it was made. Touching and oh so real, wacho...THANKS eternally GREG AND CO.!!!!!!!
roll mops i think
Prophetic, more so now, than in the 90's.................look around!
Matt Shadows voice sounds just like this
+Harambe dicks out for Harambe
This is the song that got me into BR back in the 90s. I still get nostalgic goosebumps hearing it 20 years after the first time I heard it. Absolutely amazing songwriting.
By far my favorite Bad Religion song.
Such a beautiful song
Someone please kill nicki minaj or justin bieber. I too am sorry for my generation. Btw Europe rules!!
Sincerely
A 15 year old
I, too, am sorry for my english. Im dutch ;).
Damn, I still get goosebumps from Bad Religion songs. Used to be the only thing I listened to growing up in NYC in the 90s
thumbs up if you know who social distortion is as well they are pretty good honestly i like them a little more then Bad Religion.
You sir are baddass!
I'm 13 and I listen to this music....Our generation is really fucked up listening to those shits...I know how you feel..
Nice hissy fit.
That explains how you are so smart, You are svede, not an American.
Actually hair coloring among other activities was and is done to express the ideals of punk. Just because some people do it for cool points doesn't mean everyone who does it is a poser. Sure its all over the place now but decades ago it was pretty life altering to do because of how people would perceive you.
One of the best songs ever made!!!
i guess there is still hope for punk rock, long live punk rock and its freedom it brings
Good choice kid! Just choose not to colour your hair pink and green cause that's not punk, punk is simple chords and society criticism. And I'm swedish as well :P
Icebears4ever and for the last 40 years I thought punk was about doing what the fuck you wanted. Thanks for clearing that up. *I* might not want blue hair, the next guy can do what he wants.
don't take responsibility for your generation, throughout history each one has been often misinterpreted in some fashion. faith in singularity will prevail, and the music you seek translates into what you speak and the people you'll meet.
i dont think your generation could have possibly ruined the world, your not even old enough to drive or have a job or vote orjust about anything that makes a difference in the world, and yes i realize you were refering to the music made by pre-teens like yourself, but dont feel bad, its certainly not your fault haha
The baby boomers broke the world. Don’t worry, they’re getting ready to die. Then as soon as we flush the alt right down the toilet things will be looking up.
Whoo, watch out, we got a badass over here.
Good thing no one gives a shit what you think.
I would rather say that judging people by their appearance is not really punk.
Punk is about doing what you want and your free will: maybe he wants his "stupid" avatar...
What do you have such a stupid, childish avatar for? Commenting on a punk band with that pic is just wrong.
At Twelve, Don't Do You're Own Head In And Hate Your Generation! Things Got Fucked Up A Long Time Ago!
you give your generation way to much credit. You're fucking 12. This world was ruined several hundred years ago, and the modern generations are just continuing the downward trend. You fuckers are nothing special, just the new model of dip shit.
stary poczciwy zajebisty punk
Good for you! Props to that, pass it on bro!
yeah, this is waaaaay different than lady gaga, considering this is the greatest band in the world fronted my a UCLA Life Science Professor.
The Band of my life !
Emília Peres same
2:06... WACHO!
Best band in the world....hellllll yes they are..
Meegaaaaaa!!!
Best fucking band in the world. :)
Michael S I know right
I keep getting older but bad religions songs never do
the best...
got me trough a shit load of bad times. thanks guys and anybody who enjoys this music
Yes. This is good.
one of the best br songs
This song describe what I see every time I'm in a major metropolitan area. Especially the poorer parts of America.
kickass buddy remind me of the old days thx. thumbs up
I TRY TO CLOSE MY EYES, BUT I CAN IGNORE THE STIMULAE IF THERES A PURPOSE FOR THIS SONG IT REMAINS A SECRET TO ME, DONT ASK ME TO JUSTIFY MY LIFE!
and actually as important as greg... i didnt like their time without brett, it was too graffiny. now they are back on the track, luckily ----my meaning
no, disagree! the lyrics are more than 'just goot'...;-)
But I'm thinking altruistically
And a wave of overwhelming doubt
Turns me to stone ..... those lyrics are just to good ! :')
I think they both had backing vocal spots in the album(although only Eddie was credited, Johnette was not IN PRINT on the tape's liner note when I bought)... still- that sounds clearly like Johnette singing in this song. Neither appeared when I saw this album's tour date though; bummer. I saw myself in the audience in the video for this song that was played on JBTV back in the day. Haha theBCEproductions 'jimmies'!
