Art Garfunkel - I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever) Lyrics

Shattered dreams, worthless years, here am I encased inside a hollow shell
Life began, then was done, now I stare into a cold and empty well
The many sounds that meet our ears, the sights our eyes behold
will open up our merging hearts and feed our empty souls
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever

Without despair, we will share and the joys of caring will not be replaced
What has been must never end and with the strength we have won't be erased
When the truths of love are planted firm they're only hard to find
And the words of love I speak to you will echo in my mind
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever

Man o man, what a great song! No one has a voice like Art has. Such a wonderful talented singer he is! This was one of my favorite albums when i was a teenager back in the late seventies. I would save up my lawn mowing money and ride my bike into town to the local record shop and buy a new one each week. This album was full of great songs so i played it often. What great memories of an incredible era. Art was always extra special.

I like this version better than the Stevie Wonder's remake. It's a masterpiece.

Sounds like he based this version on Peter Frampton's. Same key.

  10. Marc P Coderre

It was the Mike & The Mechanics version that introduced me to the song back in 1995. Paul Carrack does a excellent job on that. I think I still prefer that version.

WAIT, WTH...??? What happen to the "funk" section that suppose to happen at the end???

Hey Garfunkel! What happened to the funky part?! I mean come on with Funk in your name how could you leave out “The Funky Part”? Lol! Great rendition. The ding is a classic. One of Stevie’s best!

Superb song lyrically and melodically. It captures the mood of lost love and what could have been.

Ref to LA's comment,  Lying on a raft in tropical waters, just beyond the breakers with the one you love...

  30. Andrew Burgess-Linden

Paul Simon was the Better writer? Paul Simon was the more Popular writer who mostly made songs with no message.

    David Martin

Stevie Wonder wrote this song. Nice cover, though.

    Andrew Burgess-Linden

David Martin True, but Garfunkle could write better.

  31. Joey D. Slone

Can't figure out why this song wasn't released as a single.

    andlum

It was...I have it on a 45 vinyl!

  35. Stephen Boon

i love this song ive just played this to my girl friend and she loves it so much thank you for this ,lovely arrangement one of there best songs of all times

  36. Man In The Wilderness

What a beautiful song. It takes you to a wonderful place. Sure sad that in this era the music greats of yesteryear are given no love by the industry.

  37. Michael Rondinelli

My mom had this album back in the '70s and she listened to it often.  I was maybe 10 years at the time and probably listened to it as much as she did.  She passed in 2006 and hearing this song takes me right back to those times of her putting the record on the turntable and being a kid again.  This song will always have a special place in me.

    andrew stahlgren

    Michael Rondinelli god bless

WE NEED THIS MUSIC IN OUR TROUBLED WORLD
    THANK YOU

  39. jackiescanlon

There is something so heartbreaking of how Art sings this song as compared to Stevie. Having said that this is absolutely Stevie's song.

  40. sto ic

    love it . fuck paul.

  41. GlobalistEnemy01

Ok. I prefer Stevie Wonder's version better.

    brenda moss

I'm in love with Art .

    Will Richards

Fate for Breakfast is another of Art's great albums

    Myles Geronimo

    It's a great title, anyway, though I don't think I've heard it. Thanks for the 411 !!

  55. Mark Parsons

if there is one man who can truly smash a stevie wonder song or any other song it is this man, Arts voice is haunting, will love this song until the day i die

  56. quantumthunder

Didn't know what to expect when he came out with this solo album but after I had heard it I knew I would always love it and I do.

  57. Hazel Smith

Dont argue . Just listen and love it Geoff accy

  58. Steven Bacon

You two men made my childhood, God bless you both

  59. tearmann

great album for sure.  who at the time realized the album cover picture was Art and two drag queens?

    helaine625

Um, nobody realized it because that's not true. Where did you even get that info, tearmann? Oh well, on Art's site (as well as other places), here is the REAL story if anyone is interested:
"On the cover of the album, the woman to Art's left is Laurie Bird. Laurie would become very close to Art for several years until her untimely death in 1979. See Breakaway Interview with Art Garfunkel and Richard Perry discussing the evolution of the Breakaway album. The album attained Platinum certification."

  60. Cynthia Lyman

Love Art: his name turned out to be my nickname in highschool because of my creative side, but based on a talented man like this, l always took it as a compliment. Long live great music.

  61. Angela Parlane

    love this song forever

  62. tipper674

What a great song and singer

  63. Tim Boehme

Did Garfunkel write any songs?  He's a brilliant poet, but I'm not sure he ever wrote a song.  Strange.

    Kai-Mikael Jää-Aro

+Tim Boehme He did contribute bits and pieces of the classic Simon & Garfunkel songs, and the album *Everything Waits to be Noticed* is mostly songs (co-)written by Art.

    John Everiss

With a voice as pure as his, Tim, why should he waste his time writing songs?

  64. Kim Story

i listened to this album exclusively for months... one of my favorite albums of all time.

    Claire

+Kim Story Same here. I needed to listen to it again this morning. Could never find the CD.

  65. Lauren Wallace

The old days, so innocent **

    Mattie Mclean

hhmmm … quite a lot of cocaine floating about back then tho….

    Kathleen Kalman

    @Mattie Mclean nope. Hated it.

  66. lewstone1934

1980, a dark, smoky room, student days, massive loudspeakers - listening to this on my friends brilliant AIWA AD-M700 three-head professional casette deck - awe inspiring sound that I will never forget.

    MrTrashcan1

    @lewstone1934

I know it's 3 years later, but just had to comment. Perhaps in '76 I had purchased the Aiwa AD-1250, the consumer deck with the slanted top/front. Remember that Chromium tapes were so expensive then--this deck had a compromise setting--FeCr. Loved that deck and recorded much of my friends' collections as records were no bargains back then, either.

    MLG

    I can only imagine

  67. shyman99

What happens when one of the greatest songwriters (Stevie Wonder) and one of the greatest producers (Richard Perry) join one of the greatest vocalists of our time (Art Garfunkel)?  The answer:  One of the best recordings ever created.

    internet123ism2

also Doug Sax as Mastering Engineer.

    Mattie Mclean

You got that comment spot on!

  68. Vicki Perry

I agree with Josie Ouiri. Sometimes his voice is difficult to make out as he is frequentally drowned out.
    Josh Groban's version is worse.

  69. JohnE.M.

I actually love the "over produced" aspect of his music.  Overlapping vocals, strong backgrounds..   Simon and Garfunkel used many of the same over produced techniques and it creates such a rich "soundscape."    I love it!!

    TheDaddyO44

+winterdesert1 The production on the whole Breakaway album is exceptional. I don't think 'Romance' is a dirty word either....just beautiful

  70. Critter

Beautifully written, arranged, produced and sung Stevie Wonder-Yvonne Wright  penned song!

    Steven Carinci

    Richard Perry.

  71. flamingarrow167

After hearing Stevie's version this take by Art is surely one the best too. What a voice !

  72. Frank Burns

I love Art but does any one agree with me that so much of his out-put is 'over produced?' There are times when his voice is overwhelmed with production values...why??

    Josie Ouiri

@Frank Burns so true.... with a voice like that, it needed to be focal... there really didn't need much else at all.

    Frank Burns

I agree with you. I've been a fan for years but always they 'over produce' him.You can barely hear the vocals at all some times...and such a beautiful voice.

    Steven Carinci

Richard Perry perfection. You think too much. Go to sleep now. Perhaps tomorrow you won't be so stupid.

  73. tony mcgrath

My favourite Art Garfunkel song -I Believe (when I fall in love )

    Myles Geronimo

I was looking for the song with 'Disney girls,' but I guess this'll do.

Rusty, to Mark, to Jim, to James, to .. . doesn't matter~~~~~

I'm not sure if I'm in the shell, outside the shell, or looking at the shell... but I believe!

    lord ganesha

@AlistinaLayne or you may be the shell. i believe.

  76. Lorraine Ashby

I shared this beautiful track in my early G+ days - it is such a strong rhythm ballad of unbreakable love with fantastic arrangement and production - love Arts voice......

    Pat Allen

    Nice one. Thanks. :)

    Lorraine Ashby

@Pat Allen You are welcome Pat :)

    Old Blue

G+ days - google+ days? Not sure if that is pre or post salad days :) Nice song though with rousing string backing.

    Lorraine Ashby

@Old Blue Yes Old Blue I love the string backing - I could listen to this song and that man's voice over and over sigh ....

  78. Frank Harmer

forever love what a tonic for love

  79. Caroline Locke

    Probobly the best cover ever.

    Caroline Locke

I mean this version is better than Stevie's original imho.

  80. Robert Wright

Stevie's wonderful composition beautifully rendered by another top-notch vocalist.

  81. Diane Bingham

He adds a purity to anything he does...he brings out the soul of the song....Art is a good name for him!  He produces and helps with all aspects, too..I think he is Sunsign Taurus..ruled by Venus (harmony/beauty), quite obvious!

  82. thethe111 t

    So very beautiful.

  83. Lorraine Ashby

The most angelic voice - the arrangement and production is fantastic - it's like riding on the crest of a wave that rises and falls over and over carrying the listener with it. Art has that acute sensitivity as a vocalist to do justice to the song - love it!

    william blanc

LA you have hit the nail on the head in your original comment, like poetry.  This whole album is that way, in fact all of his solo recordings are magnificent, music to relax by.

    Lorraine Ashby

@william blanc Thank you William - what a lovely comment. You are so right about his solo recordings they are magnificent.

    Veronika Jessen

    Lorraine Ashby i think so

    Lauren Wallace

    I love his voice:-)

    SmoothFlow Boxing

Lorraine Ashby - i just close my eyes and I let Art’s voice take me on a wave of euphoria and tranquility. His voice is pure and natural.

  84. ralucagymnast

How could anyone dislike this song?????????Obviously 5 people are deaf as a post; thats the only reason anyone could have for disliking this; the fact that they cannot hear it.

    cellobus

Maybe they like Stevie's version better but we're splitting hairs here.

  85. ralucagymnast

You know, the words "epic" and "awesome" are much overused and misplaced, but they describe this song perfectly;makes me cry this song. Its so beautiful.

    william blanc

This song was a Stevie Wonder tune, co-written and performed.

    ralucagymnast

    @william blanc
I  know that; but Arts voice makes this, its stunning.

  86. Robert Johannsen

I've got this album, what the hell is wrong with radio?this is a steller!

    Steven Carinci

Too diverse perhaps. It did get airplay in the 70s. A little too classy for rock stations. But how cares? It's a masterpiece. One of my desert island discs for sure. Perfect playing, singing production. It's on God's iPod.

  87. MrTrashcan1

Not only does Art have a wonderful voice, but his albums were so well arranged and produced.  Brings back memories of my first gf.

  88. sequentialable12

    fantastic voice.

  89. Oded Fried-Gaon

    great song, great album.
    dude was 72 yesterday!
hmmm, what's that say about me?
    yikes.

  90. Pierre Jumeau

    Hell yeah.

  91. Steven Carinci

The whole flippin' album is a masterpiece.

  92. tipper674

  93. tranurse

stevie said it in a interview with rolling stone.

  94. noteverton

This and his version of I Only Have Eyes For You are two of the best vocal performances I've ever heard.

  95. Terry Ann

Nice, but God has blessed Stevie Wonder. Thank you God!!

  96. tipper674

    Best song

  97. evy higgs

I have always loved this song and comparing it to the new version by Josh Groban (who is one of my favorites!)---this version still rules.

  98. silenthillvictim

High Fidelity heck yes!!! Such an awesome song and movie!
