Art Garfunkel - Break Away Lyrics

I watch the distant lights on the runway
Disappear into the evening sky
Oh you know I'm with you on your journey
Never could say goodbye

It's not the sun you're trying to find
Something else is on your mind
You need a little space and time
To break away
It's not the place you're going to
It's just a phase you're going through
Though I won't stop you I don't want you to

Break awa-a-a-a-ay
Fly across your ocean
Break awa-a-a-a-ay
Time has come for you
Break awa-a-a-a-ay
Fly across your ocean
Break awa-a-a-a-ay
Time has come

For you to awaken in another country

Greet the morning under foreign skies
Leaving me to face another Monday
It's not easy to get by

It's not the sun you're trying to find
Something else is on your mind
You need a little space and time
To break away
It's not the place you're going to
It's just a phase you're going through
Though I won't stop you I don't want you to

Break awa-a-a-a-ay
Fly across your ocean
Break awa-(breakaway)-a-ay
Time has come for you
Break awa-(breakaway)-a-ay
Fly across your ocean
Break awa-(breakaway)-a-ay
Time has come for you

On this day in 1976 {February 22nd} Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" peaked at #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, and the record it bumped out of the top spot was "Breakaway" by his old buddy, Art Garfunkel...

this song went to #39 on the pop charts in 1976!!!

  31. Zuzu Foofoo

10 people don't know real music when they hear it.

    carl iannotta

    Zuzu Foofoo definitely a overstatement
    If that many

  32. Doug Mundy

Remember hearing this song on the radio when I was moving from Connecticut to Nashville, TN. December 1975 and a culture change for me somewhat.

    Lonefoxcub

I listened to this song too when I was moving out of city!

  33. terry tennille

    my cousin in background

    Patrick O'Neill

Did love keep you guys together?

    Steven Carinci

Not that she needs to hear it but your cousin sang background vocals on one of mine, and I'm sure many others as well, desert island records. EVERY cut written by some of America's greatest songwriters played by the greatest studio musicians. There was no expense spared in $$$ or talent on this masterpiece produced by the great Richard Perry. Bravo! Encore! Or as I like to put it, this album is on God's iPod!

    First Last

Mine too. I asked for this album for Christmas when I was in Jr High and actually got it.

    Mojo Holmes

    Wow! That's cool.

  34. martyw34

    Nice song.I.m more familiar with G/L version.Thanks.

  35. Paul Shannon

This was written by Gallagher and Lyle and their version is better.

    Eddie Campion

    Paul Shannon so true

    Alpha Go

    Paul Shannon
    Indeed Paul

  36. Jackie Shirley

sounds very much like Gallagher & Lyle's style, i think their LP that year was called 'Breakaway'. which included the Top 10 hits 'I Want To Stay With You' and 'Heart On My Sleeve'.

    Adrian Elliott

Gallagher & Lyle wrote the song . but didnt release there version until 12 months later...backing vocals on this by Crosby & Nash

  37. Nancy Wilson

Had the album back in the day, and Lucy Ann knew her man wasn't home tonight.

  38. Nancy Wilson

    I'm full.

    Trent Cee

Nancy Wilson who ain’t silly one

    steven roy

    Nancy Wilson from Heart?

  39. I L Singh

Ms. Toritavo, I took the time to listen to Blunstone's version. It's a cheap copy of this song. People like you should refrain from posting negative comments. You have poor taste.

  40. Maxwell Edison

This was right after Art got divorced. Hence the title. Hence the two ladies on the cover.

    Filthy McNasty

+Maxwell Edison Breakaway is the title of a song on the LP.

  41. calleaeste junior

So judging from the album cover, Art's gonna have a three-way!

    tearmann

+calleaeste junior with two other men?

    steven roy

calleaeste junior and yet he seems like the shy introverted type!

  42. Vivian Toritavo

I think Colin Blunstones version is better....and he shure have a better voice in my opinion.

    G E

    +Vivian Toritavo Impossible.

    J B

+Vivian Toritavo His version is way too orchestrated. I admire Colin but he tried way too hard on that one. The vibe totally changes the meaning of the words and the mood is off. I couldn't enjoy his great voice because of the noise. Wish I hadn't heard it! But now that I'm past that I can listen to Colin's other work. Peace

    Steven Carinci

You can not perfect perfection. this is the Platonic ideal, the rest are just seconds and thirds, etc. Just the way it is viv.

  43. Chris terry

    COOL HIT.''

  44. Timo Jepsen

Great ride, great harmonies always loved this song.

    grooverunner

+Timo Jepsen Backing Vocals by Bruce Johnston (The Beach Boys), Toni Tennille, David Crosby & Graham Nash.

    MrJimaklan

+grooverunner really? i've always thought it was stephen bishop backing him up, stephen bishop wrote this song.

    grooverunner

+MrJimaklan :"Breakaway" was written Graham Lyle & Bernard Gallagher. Stephen Bishop wrote "Looking For The Right One" and "The Same Old Tears on a New Background", sings backup vocals on "I Only Have Eyes for You".

  45. takemeback2

So glad I heard it on fm radio in Chicago just yesterday...There is hope for todays adult contemp radio stations...

  46. Barbara Cascinari

The voice of Artie are fantastic.

  47. Dennis Harvey

Apparently Toni Tenille is the primary female backing vocalist. She has such a big voice, it's interesting to hear her rein it in so much here.

    tearmann

+Dennis Harvey wow! really? toni tenille singing on a song worthy of listeners?

    Bev Dziengelewski

    Sheila Sams

@Bev Dziengelewski Man I thought I recognized some of the various voices on THIS, my sister bought the 45 in 75 and we wore it out, I didn't realize that many famous people were on here COOL✌✌💜😎

  57. Clifton Isaacs

No Hector, they didn't, and I feel cheated. I was only diddled by the janitorial staff every now and then.
