I was small when this song hit the airwaves. I remember loving it, but, felt so sad.

Bill Anderson from Lakeside, Az. Mel Tillis wrote this song and first recorded it. It is a true story. When Mel was ten years old a friend of the family came back from war I think it was Korea with a wife. He was paralyzed and she would go out at night spreading the joy. He finally got enough of it. He shot her dead then shot himself. Too sad.

Wrote about a Vet from the Korean War and his wife. Vietnam was going on at the time the song made a hit. The words, the sound, instruments, tempo all spoke of the current and relevant times of the time it became a hit in the 1960's. Words do not specify any particular war. All in America assumed it was about the Vietnam War.

Can you imagine what, first if she was everything still he would want in a wife, what changes, adjustments life had dealt him, he had to endure? I bet he was depressed and moody and may as some do, take their anger out on those they love the most. It is very normal and makes it difficult on everyone in the family.

So think to the lines about the slamming of the door and a hundred times before. What does that do to a person's mind, and all the while knowing the one you love, is fixing herself up to go be in another's arms?! (Putting that mildly.) If he was to due to the trauma of war, unbalanced and then add her actions on top?! It isn't measured by today's values and changes. It isn't right, but many would see this as justified and depending if premeditated, if not, then it could be seen as a crime of passion.
