Aretha Franklin - Skylark Lyrics

Skylark
Have you anything to say to me?
Won't you tell me where my love can be?
Is there a meadow in the mist
Where someone's waiting to be kissed?

Skylark
Have you seen a valley green with spring?
Where my heart can go a journeying
Over the shadows and the rain
To a blossom covered lane

And in your lonely flight
Haven't you heard the music in the night?
Wonderful music, faint as a will o' the wisp
Crazy as a loon, sad as a gypsy serenading the moon

Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings
So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there?

Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings
So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there?

  9. William Shelton

    Best version of this song.

  10. Steve Wright

I must say, the Linda Ronstadt version is really good too, one of the best songs she ever sang....

  11. MrStyle23

Etta James once recalled listening to Franklin’s version of Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael’s standard “Skylark.” In the second verse, Franklin jumps an octave. “I had to scratch my head and ask myself, How the fuck did that bitch do that? I remember running into Sarah Vaughan, who always intimidated me. Sarah said, ‘Have you heard of this Aretha Franklin girl?’ I said, ‘You heard her do ‘Skylark,’ didn’t you?’ Sarah said, ‘Yes, I did, and I’m never singing that song again.’ ”

  12. Dora Ohrenstein

She can sing so thrillingly in any genre of music , and yet it's always unmistakably Aretha.

  13. Ms Ladybird Dream

So when you literally weep listening to someone sing a song, that means they are pretty good.

  16. Barbara Posnack

  22. John Hobson

    Yeah, still crying.

  23. jayson biggs

More than "Respect," "I Say A Little Prayer" or any of her other hits, Aretha Franklin said this was her very favorite song to sing.

  24. universe54

Aretha is ridiculously good on this, a vocal way beyond her years. Every song she sings she makes her own and this is no different; pitch perfect and hitting some incredible notes. Her voice was a voice from God, thanks for posting.

  25. Marcus Reeves

DAMN I KNOW SHE'S GONE BUT I WANT HER TO COME BACK.

  26. Kaissa Music

When Etta James heard this song she said: "Aretha took this song to a whole nother place". "When she goes back and sing the chorus a second time and jumps an octave- I mean, she is screaming- I had to scratch my head and ask myself. How the fuck did that bitch do that? I remember running into Sarah Vaughn, who always intimidated me. Sarah said "Have you heard of this Aretha Franklin girl?" I said, you heard her do Skylark, didn't you? Sarah said. "Yes I did, I am never singing that song again". Aretha rest in peace. Thank you for using your voice to sooth our pains and to fight for our freedom. We LOVE you Queen.

  27. Adrienne Stark

    Just gorgeous!

  28. SJW Destroyer

  33. DAVID MALIK

Wow! I can see why Ms. Sarah Vaughn stated she would never sing the song again after hearing Ms. Franklin's recording of the standard. Ms. Vaugn is second to no one in regards to musical pipes but this is out of this world good. Rest in Peace and Power to both of those geniuses.

  34. E.C Arnold

By far the best, rest on high Queen.

  35. Shy maury

Simply amazing!  Her voice is pitch perfect!

  36. Stephanie Jeannot

I did not know that she covered this song. This is my favorite tune. Wow! Very nice!

  37. elizabeth Lauer

This glorious recording shows yet another aspect of Miss Franklin's talents, and is the best recording of the Carmichael/van Heusen paean to love, doubt, longing, hope that I have ever heard. Ella Fitzgerald's is lovely, rather sunny, and beautifully sung. Franklin sings the heart of the song, and curiously, In spite of all the high-flying vocalizing, at times it seems as though she is speaking the words. Of course, the stratospheric, in-flight A flat is a wonderful surprise, but my favorite moment is when she sings "loon," and imitates the bird.

    Jimmy Flynn

Hi Elizabeth - Johnny Mercer wrote these lyrics. Dedicated to Ms. Judy Garland, with whom he was in love. I agree this is a magnificent version of the song. All the best to you.

    elizabeth Lauer

Of course, and I realized that as I pressed "send." John Hammond would wag his finger at me. Thanks for making the correction, not just for me, but for all who read this. Note the writer below: do you remember Helen Twelvetrees? Or OF her?

  38. PeaceFan1

I am a fan and grew up on Aretha's music. They were doing a tribute to her today on a radio talk program, this song was played and one of the guests talked about how his belated mom played this song when he was a child, I immediately liked what I was hearing. I had never heard this before so I came to Youtube to hear this song again, it is so beautiful and soothing. The one and only "Queen of Soul", Aretha Franklin, RIH. Thank you so much for sharing this masterpiece.
