Arcade Fire - Surf City Eastern Bloc Lyrics
It's a shame about the roadblock
We're afraid that we'll get caught or stopped
Let's go right now, surf city eastern block
I'm in the trunk, my surfboard on top
I just want to find myself some sun
It's 1984, I'm on the run
Goodbye Berlin, hello Autobahn
It's a shame about the roadblock
If they catch us we won't ever talk
Let's go right now, surf city eastern block
I'm in the trunk when the inspector knocks

I was lucky enough to see them playing this song live in Prague and Budapest. So beautiful!
The song isn't about a guy who just wants to go surfing, as the description suggests. Two guys (Karsten Klünder and Dirk Deckert) escaped East Germany on surfboards by riding the waves out to Denmark. And they made it. Win wrote this song about them. Hence lyrics like "Good bye Berlin / Hello autobahn". They are escaping from East to West.
The lyrics seem to suggest otherwise though. It was probably inspired by these guys, but the actual lyrics are about someone hiding in the trunk of a car headed to West Germany, with a surf board on the top of the car. Kind of sounds like a teenager that "just wants to find some sun". It reminds me of the plot of their album The Suburbs.
Sure, although the lyrics also reference hiding in the trunk and an inspector checking it, so I think it might be a more grim story as well. :O

*scrolls to comments* *sees arguments about Hitler* haha nope *scrolls back up*
It's just a horrible thing to say. He was the reason for the holocaust and the death of a whole lot of innocent people. And the US, France, and United Kingdom fought the war because someone had to stop that madman from killing more people. If he had won the war, where do you think Germany and maybe Europe as a whole would be now? I don't know if you're pro Nazi or something, but I think you need to think over what you're saying.
Great song...strangely enough this reminds me of the hunger games national anthem theme they wrote.
This wouldn't sound out of place on Funeral, but I can see why it wasn't included in Neon Bible... brilliant song though.
I agree with you 100 percent. Their music sells itself without having the need for vulgarity or nudity in their videos.
where can you purchase this song? i thought i had all albums.
i love in neon bible when he's playing this on piano and its just him, no big orchestra, and its so heartbreaking....this is still good too, but i love that little clip.
@VampireMiw their first e.p. is easy to find in record stores or online ---great stuff, acoustic-ish.
but yeah, it's hardly surprising that a band like this just casually tosses out songs left and right. There's a U-tube vid of them covering New Order.....busking on the sidewalk.... outside one of their own shows or something! That's the mark of a good band --they just love music and playing music.
How do they have so many songs that I've never heard before? I had Funeral, Neon Bible and The Suburbs, but then yesterday I realized they have at least twenty songs I've never heard before.
This is absolutely beautiful
This song is AMAZING~~~ Human voices are enchanting
The live version off their B-sides is much better...
@Djeff501 merci beaucoup!

@ryko26 Nah, that would be 'Neighbourhood 1 (Tunnels)'. But this is a nice tune agreed.
cette chanson me fait même pleurer et pourtant,je n'ai pas de disque "No cars go",où on peut trouver ce merveilleux morceau...???
Their best song by a country mile
