Annie Lennox - Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye Lyrics

Ev'ry time we say goodbye I die a little
Ev'ry time we say goodbye I wonder why a little
Why the gods above me who must be in the know
think so little of me they allow you to go.

When you're near there's such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it
there's no love finer, but how strange the change from
major to minor...

- Ev'ry time we say goodbye.

Annie Lennox Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye Comments
  1. M.... M....

UGH this is SO beautiful and heartbreaking

  2. b.... ....

Annie Lennox is compassionate and generous with her time toward her fellow human beings. She has worked to make a real difference to this world. Makes a nice change from self-absorbed singers who put on an eye-patch to try and look mysterious when actually they just look silly.

  3. G.... F....

    that album was AWESOME!

  4. D.... M....

"No love song finer ... but how strange, the change. From major to minor." That is a brilliant lyric!
Ms. Lennox captures the essence of the song. Whenever I need to cry I put this one on.

  5. j.... r....

  7. d.... ....

The best version of this song. Better than Ella. Sorry Ella!

  8. a.... ....

    *Annie really feels that line:*
_"There's no love song finer, but how strange the change..._
    _from major to minor."_
Gets me every time. 3:13 💗

Annie looks like an angel throughout this touching video...
    *Thanks* for posting this clip!

  9. A.... B....

Wonderful singing, wonderful backing - piano, accordion, wow!

  10. m.... ....

incredibly beautiful...so many lives lost because of political posturing / procrastination....the AIDS crisis is not over...practice safer sex, it has been proven to be effective - not 100%, but nothing is (including Prep) - an orgasm is not worth dying for....

  11. C.... C....

HIV AIDS has a Rockfeller Foundation patent dating from 1957. Annie Lennox, you are beautiful.

  12. M.... D....

My late husband and I saw this the night I told him that I was HIV+. He died of AIDS six years later.

  13. M.... ....

    versión maravillosa!!

  14. R.... P....

I seem to recall she lost her brother to AIDS? Was that the case?

    R.... P....

No. It must have been someone else. Annie Lennox does not have a brother. She's an only child.

  15. e.... z....

    dumbass people !

  16. P.... L....

This is one of my faves Cole Porter's songs! It has such a sad and beautiful lyrics and melody! I love this version of Annie's and is one of my faves from her. (I'm a huge fan of Annie Lennox and the Eurythmics).

  17. M.... D....

Try not to cry...and then cry your eyes out...

  18. W.... H....

Since I'm a Conservative, let's just get the stereotype over with for the bleeding-heart liberals: "It's propaganda by the homosexual agenda!!" Now then, let's get to actual feelings: This is not only a beautiful song by someone whom I didn't even know could sing like this, but it is also a very powerful - yet somehow simultaneously gentle - reminder of what AIDS has wracked on actual People... That happy child didn't yet know that he would be an "odd man out", much less that that this strange & unique disease would sweep into our world in the 80's. (Just another reason I want to go back to the 70's.)

    W.... H....

You could edit your comment -- delete the 1st two lines, which are totally irrelevant, and leave the praise, the musing, the powerful part of your post. Disease is no respecter of party affiliation, gender, color, age, etc.

    W.... H....

Thank you for your reply, especially your description of my main message. I can only respond that it was a reflex reaction to the age-old adage: always open with a joke... 80)

  19. J.... V....

Of all the songs she has done . This is my favorite .

  20. R.... J....

Reaches into your soul and touches that place inside. Only managed by a few songs. Sadness and beauty move this song. An essential inclusion on an unforgettable album.

  21. S.... ....

Christ! Lovely interpretation. Such naked loss and mourning. And when she takes it up an octave toward the end ... Look out, Ella!

  22. J.... C....

The saddest song ever performed. The slight changes the artist and/or producer made to the melody and the meter elevate this from a melancholy but clever song to an absolute gut punch.

  23. c.... c....

    Attack hiv... eradicate AIDS.gentle voice!

  24. c.... c....

I’m all the way behind you. Great arrangement.

  25. M.... J....

Good ol’ Cole Porter. One of his best little gems 💎, almost impossible to sing, but not for Annie Lennox. When she hits those high notes 🎼it’s like ascending to heaven. My God what a work of beauty!

    M.... J....

    This is a great song ;

written by a great songwriter , Cole Porter ; and , sung by a great singer , Annie Lennox.

  27. V.... R....

Cole Porter wrote some of the best music ever written. Looking forward to when musicians can learn to write lyrics again. Annie does it justice.

    V.... R....

I doubt that anyone will ever come close -- truly he was a genius -- but many modern musicians have their moments. Amy Winehouse had some lovely, poetic, clever lyrics, such as "For you I was aflame" (both "I was on fire because I wanted you so much" and "I was a flame that drew you, moth-like, self-destructive, to me"). And perhaps listen to Elbow's "Puncture Repair" -- again, not anywhere near CP's level, but it has a moment or two:

  28. C.... H....

LOVE how she sings this song.

  29. C.... H....

Beautiful song beautifully sung. Video is sweet, or maybe bittersweet. I also love Ella singing it. Chords here are different but effective. Long live Cole Porter!

  30. I.... B....

    A truly moving redition.

  31. r.... s....

imho Ella made it impossible for anyone else to have a bash at this fabulous song.

  32. G.... G....

To not cry would almost be an insult.

  33. P.... B....

I really dont understand the ones, who doesn't like it. Are they so stupid, that they dont get the msg or what?

    P.... B....

Could be that they're so attached to another rendition that they're not ready to hear the overwhelming poignancy of this one.

  34. e.... P....

Che nostalgia, mi viene da piangere. Magnifica versione, magnifica versione.

  35. B.... L....

simply the best version of this ever.

  36. R.... G....

Wonderful song for World AIDS Day today (and every day, really). Beautiful.

  37. M.... S....

It's World AIDS Day today. This version always brings me to tears as I remember.

  38. T.... J....

Absolutely breathtaking. So incredibly beautiful version <3

  39. j.... ....

How about a shout out to Steve Lillywhite on the production of this song?

    j.... ....

Yes! And I'm adding a respectful and appreciative nod to his then-wife, the brilliant Kirsty MacColl whom we lost in 2000. She appears with The Pogues on this CD.

  40. J.... ....

    Really....The best.

  41. C.... K....

    The best version ever.

  42. B.... C....

Beautiful and heartbreaking. A masterpiece of a song by Cole Porter and a masterpiece of a vocal/video by a great interpreter of song.

  43. L.... ....

Beautiful song, beautiful rendition. For a totally different take--but also wonderful--listen to this song by Ray Charles and Betty Carter.

  44. C.... S....

    A truly fabulous singer! x

  45. A.... A....

I never really HEARD this song until now.

    A.... A....

    You're in for a treat.

Cole Porter, arguably the best American composer ever, wrote this, along with hundreds of other masterpieces.

    Happy digging!

    A.... A....

Listen to Simply Red's version. I like Annie's voice but she sings this too slow for me.

  46. D.... ....

Slight correction; the album was entitled Red, Hot + Blue.
Might seem a flippant difference, but in context of what it was about - significant.

    D.... ....

    Good point.

  47. t.... ....

I know what Cole Porter meant. Every time we said goodbye I cried a little.

    t.... ....

    " I die a little, not I cried a little... ok?

  48. A.... F....

    Derek Jarman: RIP
    Annie Lennox: Always brilliant...

Annie Lennox is alive and well. Dec. 11, 2019

    A.... F....

Sorry there seems to be a lot of confusion because Roxette passed away and people think it's Annie and,are saying RIP.

  49. m.... p....

Every time I say goodbye to my loved one I still cry my eyes out and Anniies version does it  for me every time. A truly great artiste. Thank you for sharing this wonder.

  50. D.... R....

    makes me cry

    D.... R....

    Derek Rodriguex

Have you seen kd lang's performance of 'So In Love' from the same album, it will make you weep.

    D.... R....

Derek Rodriguex I think it should make everyone cry. Especially since it was for AIDS awareness and all who did say goodbye far too soon. 😭😭😭

  51. r.... ....

professorenol: I hope you know how grateful so many of us are that you have created this archive of Annie's work. How lucky to have the breadth of her work available to us to watch over and over. It's a great joy. Thank you.

  52. J.... K....

Oh how I love you Annie and how perfectly you capture the feeling of this moving Cole Porter masterpiece.

  53. N.... C....

It can not be sang better then this.
Every time we say goodbye, I die a little,
Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.

  54. T.... B....

Hell's teeth! Is this wonderful, or what? I love the music of Annie Lennox but her singing this song is the first time I've choked with emotion. She goes up even further in my estimation. So good, so good.

    T.... B....

+Ty Byrd a truly wonderful song. annies voice brings me to tears.

  55. d.... b....

Like opening up a door into a world of sadness and longing for someone lost.

  56. J.... S....

Is available on red hot and blue on itunes

  57. M.... J....

This is such a raw emotioned rendition. As I sit tethered to my walker, flesh hanging like withered leaves from the vine of my bones... this is my song

  58. m.... d....

So moving...For me the best version of "every time..."

  59. J.... V....

This is her most powerful song I think she ever did . I find myself listening to
    it often .

    J.... V....

Totally agree this was her Golden moment and faultless at the top of her game.

  60. m.... p....

Annie Lennox said in an interview that she had just had a miscarriage when she recorded this for the HIV-Aids Tribute album / Red/Hot and Blue all the songs were covers of Cole Porters music ..This song still gives me chills !

  61. B.... B....

best rendition of Cole Porter's song.

  62. A.... M....

uma das mais lindas interpretações de Cole Porter!

  63. S.... ....

What a beautiful woman and a beautiful rendition. Speechless. The video concept, execution and direction is just gorgeous too, an awesome job all around. Perfection.

  64. J.... V....

I always liked Annie Lennox. I never knew she could do Cole Porter . This is another side of her that I never heard . I wish he had done more would like to listen to it . I do know the story behind it .

  65. V.... c....

I wish this was available as a single on Amazon or ITunes, it is such a beautiful song, would love to have it in my player list

  66. h.... ....

this whole red hot and blue was great comfort to many people during this time. We have not forgotten XOX

  67. p.... ....

The home movies projected onto the screen are actually home movies of Derek Jarman as a child. Annie is an only child.

    p.... ....

Thanks for this piece of info (I was scrolling to find out!), and thanks for uploading the video. Peace.

  68. R.... P....

The two little kids are actually home movies off Annie Lennox and her older brother, who died off AIDS. Makes me cry every time. Miss you, Khalin.

  69. p.... ....

Thank you so much for showing this. I saw it many years ago and it made me cry, and it still does. The 2 little kids are like my own 2, all grown up now and gone their separate ways.
