Love her performance and she's adorable but...they could've done a better job with the lip syncing by having her sing the studio version *after* instead of *before* shooting this scene, so that it would have matched her movements and rhythms in the scene better.

In this scene, there would've not been any possibility to record it consistently enough by using boom mic's, or any other hidden mic's. Not even if you used several, because her movements and the tight spaces couldn't possibly allow that to happen from a logistical standpoint.

Nitpicking, perhaps, but the lip syncing to her own studio version is off.

You can record and shoot in two different orders:

1) As they did here, you can have her practice the song to get it down pat, as well as the complete choreography of the scene, and then: Try to match it as close as you can (while filming and while she is performing), to the previously recorded studio version.

OR:

2) You first film this whole scene, and then, afterwards, while watching her own performance on a screen/monitor, have her "nail it" in the studio, by doing enough takes in the recording studio to make sure the studio version matches her performance on film close enough that there isn't any apparent disparity in lip syncing.

Whether option 1 or 2, you also need to record separate tracks for the vocal, as well as for "instruments" like the plastic cup & hand claps.
In any case, those are easier to match temporally.

And you don't even need the talent (actress) to do that; that can be done by sound engineers.

But here, they most likely either temporally separated the cups & hand-claps from a studio vocal and used the actual cups and claps recorded in the movie scene, and then just adjusted later them to have a consistently leveled volume and replaced the vocal track -- as the cups and hand claps seem to match perfectly including one clinking of two cups together.

Unlike, say, musicals from 60-70 years ago or more when you had a simple, big and uncomplicated Hollywood studio stage roomy enough and sensitive enough mic's (just avoid distortion at the loudest parts) to record the performance live, the restaurant setup and any movement (like, for example, a spin dance move away from the mic -- even if sound levels are later adjusted) doesn't allow to reasonably have the logistics on the set to make it a live musical recording with a quality recording. And that, is why the lip syncing here and there is not just a bit off but quite more than just a bit off, so it would have been better to "match it" in the same way as animated movie voice actors and actresses match their voices -- to the animators' characters' mouth movements. (By watching a screen/monitro of the movie the animators made, whether silent or with "guide" stand-in pre-recorded voices).

While the mouth movements of the animated characters are more general and nonspecific, and not as specifically temporally obvious with perfectly human-like lip movements, in this scene, her actual vocal performance in the restaurant requires much more precision to match her lip syncing than animation voice work.

So you make one track for vocals, separate and re-record that, and one for cups & hand-claps, and then you let the talent match it to a screen she can watch of the previously filmed scene, where her character in the movie is singing the song so that she can hit it just right.

If you do it in the opposite order, it's harder to match what you recorded earlier without, say, using an ear monitor (which wasn't possible in this scene), or without using a single, loud speaker in each location where the camera moves between different rooms/areas of the set for her to sing along to. (You shouldn't use several at just one, so as to avoid having an echo/reverb effect). But using speakers or ear monitors in order to match one's lip syncing to an earlier recorded version isn't as ideal as the first option.

Now, it IS of course possible that they DID shoot it in the order of the first option I mention here, and if they did, then surely it wasn't done with enough studio takes to match the recorded voice to the lip syncing correctly.

I was wondering why the cups & hand claps are in perfect sync on screen, and her lip syncing is off. Yes, competent recording engineers can do all that in less than a day but my guess is the recording engineers replaced her voice with the most perfect studio recording she could do but left the original cups & claps (adjusted for consistent volume) in place but plugged in her voice with a studio recording.

The clearest miss is where she does the hand washing scene and is right after that off her lip sync at around 2:06-2:10 but there are other parts too. Some are also not consistent with how you sing when you increase your amplitude and most of the time when her back is at the camera she doesn't follow through as consistently. I'd like to see more scenes of this movie but so far this is the only one I've seen.

I don't know how reliable this website is and what exactly they mean "majority of production" or "when singing alone" (AK) -- in a crowded restaurant, or in an isolated scene? So, it's a bit more vague than I'd like but here it is:

I've never seen any of these movies so it's hard to guess about other scenes. The lipsync surely is off. That is all I can clearly see for certain.

Well, that, plus see and hear that even if the production isn't perfect, it's still rather well done and she's very nice.

The sound engineers could have also made a mix where some parts are live and some re- or pre-recorded to fix parts of the live performance.

Indeed, some sound engineers in movies can do tricks more impressive than that.

For example, in the movie Rock Star, the sound enginerers mixed/mashed Mark Wahlberg's voice with that of other singers and it's near impossible to hear where one voice ends and another voice begins as it was done so well. So that's not just re- or pre-recording the singer and plugging it in but using someone different for parts of the vocals.
