Amos, Tori - Real Men Lyrics

Take your mind back - I don't know when
Sometime when it always seemed
To be just us and them
Girls that wore pink
And boys that wore blue
Boys that always grew up better men
Than me and you
What's a man now - what's a man mean
Is he rough or is he rugged
Is he cultural and clean
Now it's all change - it's got to change more
'Cause we think it's getting better
But nobody's really sure
And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are
See the nice boys - dancing in pairs
Golden earring golden tan
Blow-wave in the hair
Sure they're all straight - straight as a line
All the gays are macho
Can't you see their leather shine
You don't want to sound dumb - don't want to offend
So don't call me a faggot
Not unless you are a friend
Then if you're tall and handsome and strong
You can wear the uniform and I could play along
And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are
Time to get scared - time to change plan
Don't know how to treat a lady
Don't know how to be a man
Time to admit - what you call defeat
'Cause there's women running past you now
And you just drag your feet
Man makes a gun - man goes to war
Man can kill and man can drink
And man can take a whore
Kill all the blacks - kill all the reds
And if there's war between the sexes
Then there'll be no people left
And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

Amos, Tori Real Men Comments
  1. j.... d....

OMG, is this cover better than the original? It is rare for a cover to eclipse the original.

  2. h.... ....

I guess this song won't be allowed to sing on public now as politically incorrect. Strong and raw as meat

    h.... ....

Clearly you missed the entire point of this song. Listen to the lyrics and think about it....

  3. M.... P....

What?! Haha, this is an awesome cover by an incredible performer . Shes stunning and her spin on the song is hauntingly effective.

Original and cover...... no better just different. Depends what you heard first. I cant listen to the original after having heard this first.

I like it more than the original IMHO, but just my opinion. Her voice is impeccable as is her piano.

  4. S.... J....

    Perfection.

  5. S.... M....

When did Tori subscribe to the wardrobe department???

  6. U.... S....

This sounds really beautiful to me,I don't know the original,I will check it out but I thought this was beautifully done.I think Tori Amos is supertalented and comparing her to Kate Bush I think is entirely useless.I thought when I first heard Tori years ago that she was Kate Bush wannabe but she is totally her own artist and has her own style and take on things. She is a superb pianist and singer and performer.Love her here.

  7. T.... H....

    Meh !!!!

  8. M.... M....

She needs to plAy this outside of the white housec

  9. H.... ....

If this aired today the word ‘faggot’ would get bleeped...

  10. K.... B....

    she's so beautiful here 😍

  11. t.... ....

    Nice!              WooF!!!

  12. J.... L....

    thumbs down times 10,0000 !

    J.... L....

thats not a real number you idiot.

  13. O.... C....

If you cover a song, try something really different. Tori isn't Joe. She's got talent, for sure, but she isn't Joe.

    O.... C....

    Tori isn't a man :P
But than again , these days the borders seem to be faded.
That's the difference between Joe and Tori , Joe loves men and Tori does.

    O.... C....

Funny enough, this is the least changed of the covers on Strange Little Girls. You should hear her version of Heart of Gold.

    O.... C....

    No one is Joe.

Costello is kinda like a rough draft.

  14. J.... M....

She's got balls of steel. and TALENT, intelligence, and strength..wish she'd get more press

    J.... M....

They are scared of Tori's energy and power and what it may represent to their dark world order.

  15. T.... D....

    I miss her

  16. B.... ....

She's great but Joe Jackson's original cannot be topped.

  17. k.... y....

Fucking Amazing as always, She Drips with class and Talent...A rare breed these days

  18. B.... O....

Tori may have talent, but why this song?  I don't get it.  What is the point?

    B.... O....

It was a concept album from 2001 where Tori took songs written by men and sang them from a Woman's perspective.

  19. F.... d....

I hate covers of songs that can't be better than the original.

  20. M.... X....

My god, this woman can do no wrong. Amazing.

  21. A.... B....

    haunting.....

  22. J.... C....

Really think it is better to write your own songs. With all respect...

    J.... C....

She's written about 18 albums of original songs. With all (due) respect...

    J.... C....

She does. No one should ever do cover versions? Sounds boring to me.

    J.... C....

Tell that to Joe Jackson, who usually has at least one Steely Dan cover in all his live shows ("Any Major Dude" and "King of the World" in particular).

  23. J.... C....

When you know, or like JJ, this hurts. The intonation and feel is completely gone. Please never take this composition again Tori.

    J.... C....

She totally won't now that you've asked lol. This is on an album, I'm sure jj knows and approves, all other male artists she covers does.

    J.... C....

    Yup. This is a travesty.

    J.... C....

Jan who's the bald aging dork in your icon?

    J.... C....

    Joe actually loves this cover.

    J.... C....

Jan Coen Wierda JJ has stated publicly he prefers Tori’s version better than his.....👍🏻

  24. G.... T....

I love her rendition. her INTERPRETATION of the song is what makes it so original.

    G.... T....

It is shit. No woman should sing this song.

    G.... T....

hey dont assume her gender ;-)

    G.... T....

The entire concept of the album is Tori covering songs about women. She turns her on concept on it's head by covering this song as the last song on the album.

  25. f.... ....

I love Tori, and she looks beautiful here. A nice cover. She puts her own "spin" on it.

  26. C.... H....

Absolutely brilliant. If one can't see how "ORIGINAL" this cover of "Real Men" is, then one clearly does not get (and clearly never will get) Tori.

    C.... H....

And I don't want to get her. She's a third rate Kate Bush.

    C.... H....

That was the entire point of the album this cover is from.

    C.... H....

Bruins fan you're a douchebag...go watch more hockey and drink another bud to make your beer gut larger, meathead

    C.... H....

What's your argument? That only gay men should sing it?

    C.... H....

Chad Hill you sir are a Real Man

  27. M.... R....

Love the original, love her cover even more.

  28. C.... K....

    She covers Joe Jackson

  29. s.... b....

Funny Craig introduces her as the most original song writer, and then she performs a song by another performer.

  30. E.... C....

Like this version more maybe cause l like tori's music style more then Joe Jackson's 80's style.

    E.... C....

    Y kant Tori read? :)

  31. C.... H....

Gee, you were nice till the last sentence!

  32. c.... ....

I'm saying Tori was beautiful at the time this vid was shot. She's virtually unrecognizable today. Tori has indeed had multiple 'cosmetic procedures'. I'm not making it up or "hating"—it's just a fact. I still love her music and go to her shows. BTW, Cher has had so much plastic surgery it isn't funny. Get a clue.

  33. S.... ....

Well, it depends on if you like the Jackson guy, i Don't, never did.. Tori rocks this song with so much feeling. Thanks Tori for being who you are..

    S.... ....

    Jackson is a great songwriter.

  34. K.... ....

His comment is shit, but come on, his mom is probably a nice woman

  35. M.... ....

    Stunning.

  36. C.... H....

How do you know she's had plastic surgery? Give me a link that professes that fact. I generally like young girls, but Tori Amos is, well, one of the exemptions. Cher, Kili Minogue, sorry some others just slip my mind right now. But are you saying that a woman can't be beautiful unless she goes "under the knife"?

  37. d.... ....

I like your passion. Favorite of mine for several years.......thanks man......

  38. c.... ....

What a moving interpretation of "Real Men". God, she was beautiful. Before all the botox and plastic surgery. :-/

    c.... ....

    Fuck off.

  39. T.... O....

i love how the host says the most "original" when its a fuckiing cover...and a bad cover at that!@

  40. S.... V....

And you are obviously a typical woman hater....sad for you to have so much anger in you towards 50% of the human race....

  41. T.... d....

I like your comment & gave it a thumb up, although i also believe it doesn't improve Joe Jackson's version and this one isn't getting a 'hight' like Joe reaches one.

  42. f.... ....

A fair effort at englands best songwriter ever,Joe Jackson. Why Joe never got the true deserved recognition for how good he is puzzles me. He is a legend and no one can sing his songs as good as he does but i might be biased lol.

  43. C.... ....

Well you agree that you are an old nasty virgin and you cant even back it up, now begone and leave Tori alone.

  44. A.... S....

    Good argument. You win.

  45. A.... S....

I'd come right out and say "Tori is gross" to your face, but that's kinda hard to do given this is a computer-based medium, moron.

  46. C.... ....

I think anything sexual reminds you of your mother, fucking those sweaty truckers for packs of cigarets and chinese take out. Tori is a beautiful girl with a beautiful voice, your mothers voice is probably raspy from all that drinking and screaming (Jealous bitch) get a clue and don't ever dis respect tori and hide behind your computer like a little bitch, if you have a problem with how she performs go fuck a cat and spare the rude comment, no one cares....

  47. A.... S....

I'm not trolling, just stating my opinion, just the same way that you are. Get a clue, moron.

  48. S.... R....

    massive troll

  49. N.... R....

do you even know who wrote this song.? oh you have gun turrets and all you see is racist red white bitches you gotta shoot down with them. this is a 1982 joe jackson song . Joe struggled with his homosexuality and deals with pressure and expectations put upon his gender...but you already dont know this..go screw a black rhino and get a clue. have a good day shooting yankee bitches with your brilliance . bwaw haw haw

  50. M.... G....

    Racist Red, White Bitch!

  51. C.... H....

Excellent performance of this cover. As usual. :)

  52. J.... B....

I'm sure it has been said before but the point of the album is the female point on male protagonist songs-kind of a what if. and how does the meaning change-97 Bonnie & Clyde is so different. Raining Blood..

  53. A.... S....

@BoysForPele1989 It's not a male bias or sexist or any other shit you feel you must read into my reply, it's rejection of something I find gross and disgusting; Tori Amos.

  54. A.... C....

@MrJynxi How could anyone allow you to have such bad taste?

  55. A.... C....

@SpudMills @SpudMills You sexist sludge. Really? You are going to attempt to sexually shame her for covering a song that breaks down sexism, gender roles, war, and heterosexism. Your synapses must not be firing correctly. Tori is a legend. I'm a gay male and Tori's cover speaks more to me than the original, I prefer sonorous voices. Remove your male bias, because it has no power in the defense of a sing that challenges such social programming.

  57. P.... ....

@redguitartube I pity your lack of knowledge.

  58. P.... ....

@musoshi That childish and stupid comment just says more about you now doesn't it?

  59. M.... ....

This is a travesty of justice. How could ne1 allow this butchery of one of the greatest songs of all time.

  60. E.... A....

I enjoyed Joe Jackson's version far more.

  61. J.... D....

@kjulietraven Probably something to do with Kilborn's (slightly) later timeslot?

  62. B.... ....

    @SpudMills Funniest comment.

  63. A.... S....

God she's gross, especially the way she's always grinding her crotch against the stool. Way to ruin a genius Joe Jackson song, skank.

  64. H.... B....

    Joe Jackson

  65. M.... R....

i hope this filthy, scummy whore dies a horrible and brutal death...
why is it legal for her to murder this song in such or horrid, god awful way.

  66. D.... F....

    @craigusaurus hahahah debil...

  67. C.... H....

This is a message to all of you parents, Father died recently, was going blind. Tori Amos can play the piano, blind, David Gilmore (pink Floyd) can play the frets blind. I can play the hundred or so songs when the lights are out. Short term, helping them to make money is fine, but I built my first guitar. Start your kids early if they have a yearning to play an instrument. It's really an act of love for your children.

  68. c.... ....

poor bitch makes her self look stupid trying to have talent based on mans talent go and buy some lyrics from a chap who has talent.

  69. b.... ....

this is from '01, right? So she was allowed to say "faggot" and "whore," but in '07 they wouldn't let her say "MILF" on the air when she played Big Wheel on Letterman? I don't get it.

  70. d.... ....

    It's a great song.
Regardless of whether Joe or Tori sing's it.

  71. A.... H....

    recommend!

  72. D.... P....

@archraskal The purpose of Strange Little Girl's as an album was for Tori to cover typically "masculine" songs from a female perspective. Personally, I totally think it translates as the song deals with sexuality on numerous levels, so based on that it shouldn't matter what sex the person is who sings it. But for you, I would just say... Don't listen to the rest of the album, I don't think you'll like it very much!

  73. a.... ....

Why the hell is she covering this song at all? It's from a distinctively male prospective. It makes her look silly. How annoying that she did something like this. Poor judgement, perhaps? This cover just doesn't work for the basic reason that she's female. It doesn't translate in any way whatsoever.

  74. E.... W....

I adore when Tori covers other folks' music, as much as I like her own. She finds shades and colors that no one else does.

  75. t.... ....

    poor cover

  76. a.... ....

I can't find this fight "Tori vs. Joe" meaningful. I didn't even heard about Jack Johnson until I heard Tori Amos' version of his song, and I found it very deep, profound. I think relevant songs should be re interpreted by other artists. That's the point of music

  77. K.... ....

    @tramtrackharry
    Yes. That's exactly it.

  78. K.... ....

    @Mehrfachkeks
If you want to read a discussion of this issue, google:
"Today I had the greatest pleasure of talking to Mr. Joe Jackson himself"

  79. K.... ....

    @Mehrfachkeks
You are 100% wrong. Jackson's original lyrics are:
"Sure they're all straight, straight as a line,
All the gays are macho, can't you see their leather shine?"
    Amos's altered lyrics are:
"Sure they're all straight, straight as a line,
All the guys are macho; see their leather shine."

So which lyrics did you get wrong - Jackson's or Amos's?

  80. G.... J....

@KaitainCPS yes, 1982, thank you for pointing that out

  81. K.... ....

    @Mehrfachkeks
There's a single change: "all the gays are macho" changed to "all the guys are macho".

  82. K.... ....

    @BabyDillGerkin
    Was actually released in 1982.

  83. K.... ....

    @tramtrackharry
I disagree. I love Joe and love his original, but I think Amos provides a really interesting interpretation and performance. Even Joe really likes Tori's version.

  84. i.... ....

@GirlsThatWearBlue But that lyric is in the original Joe Jackson version too, from 1983..

  85. p.... ....

@BabyDillGerkin Verrry long way to go mate, you're right — and why do I get the sinking feeling that we are going backwards ? Imagine the reactions when a heavyset long-haired guy looking like a Hell's Angel states he hates soccer with a passion and quotes Jean Genet's poems by heart ? (And I'm not even gay, just to go the whole stereotype way…)

  86. r.... ....

    who's this Karaoke girl?

  87. L.... R....

    both versions rock!

  88. A.... N....

    Gorgeous....

  89. G.... J....

nice version of the Joe Jackson classic
written in 1983 --- we still have a long way to go on these topics
    great song

  90. e.... m....

@ufos22 most definitely! Most beautiful woman ever!

  91. C.... H....

@steinerdude I don't want to make you mad but .. were you drunk four hours ago? She sings the words soo clearly. " If there's war between the sexes, there will be nobody left." I've had very little schooling but some of the spelling here on youtube is unbeleivable !!!!Do'es anyone out there think Tori is absoluty seductivly georgeous singing this song, besides me?

  92. C.... H....

I usually don't comment on music because we all have our favorites from the past, but Tori reallly performs the Joe Jackson song to bring one to tears. Where the hell did Tori go? She's so good here.

  93. P.... G....

    no comment needed.

  94. d.... ....

@DaveyBoyEssexUK Tori is much better pianist.

  95. R.... T....

I dunno- she's ok but I don't get the spark. I think Tori Amos is a little over-rated.

  96. s.... ....

    Both great versions!

  97. C.... ....

    I really prefer the original.
