So I just can't figure out the line about Kim Carnes, the "blonde chick who sings Bette Davis Eyes". First I thought the line was "kill myself like," and I knew Kim Carnes didn't do that so I wondered if maybe it was an urban myth during the 80s or something. Then I found the real lyrics, "clone myself like," and I still don't understand because I can't find anything about Kim Carnes trying to clone herself either. I'm so confused qq but I love the song.

I always understood that "clone myself" in the sense of "being like", not in a literal way!

Tori has talked a lot about how she sold herself out to be a big-haired commercial rocker chick in the 80s, and failed miserably at doing so. My interpretation of this song is that it’s a reliving of her experiences of the 80s in Los Angeles—decadent, drug fueled, surrounded by people who talk about spirituality while having plastic surgeries and trying to be gorgeous commodities for everyone else. So when she sings “I may not have to die; I’ll clone myself like that blonde chick that sings Bette Davis Eyes,” I don’t think she is knocking Kim Carnes specifically, but rather making an arbitrary reference to a typical 80s one-hit wonder. She’s saying that her career doesn’t have to be a total failure. Instead, she can sell out and maybe have a big hit like Bette Davis Eyes and be known as “that blonde chick”—suggesting that she could have a big hit but be forgotten as a musician. It’s a tongue in cheek retelling of her experience in the 80s. After he attempt to become an 80s big-haired rock band lead vocalist failed, she instead focused on being a musician instead of a product. So she is known as Tori Amos and not “that redhead who sang that song in the 80s.”

You are overthinking.. She had outdone herself in the glory of her success and wanted to be out of it because it had affected her emotionally and psychologically.. At that time she 'wished' she was someone else like those 'fake dolls' where she could just walk in and walk out.. But she couldn't, she repeats the theme of the hologram after she had almost 'died' too many times because she was so sick of it.
