Amos, Tori - America Lyrics

The other America
You can find her Sunday
Sitting by a stream
On her own
All alone

The other America
Might show up on Tuesday
At your kitchen door
She will ask politely
"Is anybody home?

Or did they all lay down
To sleep through the now?
And if they all lay down
I'll be waiting for them
At the river bed
Once they wake from their rest"

The other America
Takes herself to night school
To understand the law
She may bring you questions
When she finds the flaw

"Why did they all lay down
To sleep through the now?
And if they all lay down
I'll be waiting for them
At the river bed
Once they wake from their rest"

We could be opening a doorway globally
But that's okay
Once upon a time you had faith
You would not be swayed
By fools untouched by clairvoyance
And you swore that we'd be brave
Well not today
No not today

Because we all lay down
To sleep through the now
And if we all lay down
She'll be waiting for us
Where the rivers cross
Once we wake from our rest

"All the best," the Other America

i like your interpretation with the photographs. They tell an interesting story.

  2. T.... ....

The photo at 2:25 (roughly), with the girl smoking a cig, is by Mary Ellen Mark, not Diane Arbus.

Oh boy. Does this feel prescient today. One part of America not paying attention to the existence of another.

Dang this one heck of a song.

This reminds me of her song Virginia from Scarlet's Walk. To me it's a metaphor of when America was owned by Native Americans.

+winogirlll This is a song about Americans sleeping through the present. Sleeping while the country edges closer to fascism. The other America is polite, not illegally invading countries. The other America is educating herself, not being brainwashed by propaganda and conspiracy theories. The other America isn't afraid, of modernity, Muslims, gays, people of color etc. The other America isn't afraid of opening her door to the world and being a part of the international community. The current America wants to close off her borders and pretend she doesn't need any other countries. The current America has forgotten who she is. The current America is sleeping walking through her present (now) and forgetting her past. The other America will be there, waiting to be re-discovered when Americans wake up.

That was my interpretation of this song also. She is an amazing songwriter.
