America - No Fortune Lyrics

We were dancin' in the middle
We could hardly hold our heads up
I think we had too much to drink
I remember wondering what they'd think
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da

We were thinkin' 'bout the future
We were trying not to laugh
Then you made me cry instead
I remember wishing I was dead
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da

No fortune pays for wounds like these
It's been too long a time now please
Just say you will, we can call it a day
It's not as though we ain't sinned
It's just a game we all play
There was nothing to win

Well I'm coming home lady
I'm your homecoming man
Trying hard to stand the rain
Gettin' back on my feet again
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da

No fortune pays for wounds like these
It's been too long a time now please
Just say you will, we can call it a day
It's not as though we ain't sinned
It's just a game we all play
There was nothing to win
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da

No fortune pays for wounds like these
It's been too long a time now please
Just say you will, we can call it a day
It's not as though we ain't sinned
It's just a game we all play
There was nothing to win
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da

    Not bad at all!

I do like this but wrapping my head around this sound compared to the first 3 albums. That is where my heart is. Although I love Daisy Jane and Sister Golden Hair on Hearts (album 5). Holiday hit with Tin Man and Lonely People. I actually love Old Man Took off that one. Anyhoo..bring back my acoustic men. Thanks!

Here, Here!.... Nice to see another fan that feels this album was never given its just desserts. After a 2 year sabatical, America returned in 1979 as a duet with this strong set of introspective songs. Some of Gerry & Deweys finest work lies in SILENT LETTER as this song ably demonstrates. The loss of Dan Peek was huge, but this album should have fared better. As you so eloquently put, it was criminally dismissed.

it was indeed criminal. What in the world happened to "Only Game in Town" By Dewey Bunnell? Silent Letter was a flop for no reason! WHY? Just because they hadn't had a top 10 song in 4 years? AND they were on Capitol Records. Was Jim Morey their manager then?

Such a great song! The whole album is very good indeed!

  13. B.... D....

One of the best songs from a criminally overlooked album.

  14. l.... ....

one of the best tracks on this album
