America - Glad To See You Lyrics

Bells ring in in my ear
Voices I hear
Whispering daily to me
Love in your fire
High on a wire
When I know you're near me

God, I'm glad to see you
I thought you'd left me far away
I wouldn't give much to be you
But I want you to know I feel this way

All over the world
Flags are being unfurled
Waving before the dawning
I'm watching the show
The last one to know
Which way that things are going

God, I'm glad to know you
I thought you'd left me far away
I wouldn't give much to be you
But I want you to know I feel this way

Cars fighting their way
Out of L.A.
On a Sunday morning
I'm watching the show
The last one to know
Which way that things are going

God, I'm glad to see you
I thought you'd left me far away
I wouldn't give much to be you
But I want you to know I feel this way

God, I'm glad to know you

Let's not be dumbass. Without a doubt, George Martin was to America what Al Kooper was to Lynyrd Skynyrd: An extra band member. If you can't hear that with this song especially, then you don't know Jack about his sound. By listening to this one song alone, you can infer just how much of what you might have thought was the Beatles was really George Martin.

Wasn't he just a cover band?? Never heard of him until later in the 90s

Dan Peek wrote and sang this song. Miss you Dan. I wish you had stayed with America. I think George Martin rather ruined the band and you guys were better off without him. Then too was the FAME and excess that cam with it. I guess you were the odd man out, the guy who wasn't up to living in the fast lane of fame. I understand why you didn't stay with the band. I bet it wasn't all that much fun being with Dewey and Gerry since they had the better looks and you had your health issues. That said, I have read that you were the LEAD GUITAR in the band and that is something they couldn't take from you. So maybe you didn't have all of the rock star looks. You looked pretty good at times but it was kind of obvious to at least me that you weren't always comfortable. I guess you knew that maybe Gerry and Dewey didn't appreciate you that much. Maybe it came down to hit songs and you didn't have them then. That said, I have several of your solo albums, Bodden Town, Guitar Man, one and two and I think they are both great plus your Caribbean Christmas. Those albums are all quite good. Miss you Dan and I respect that you went on to make Christian Music. I bought your book, read it, loved it. People loved you Dan even though we never met you. Thank you for your music and also for your Christian faith. Rest in peace Dan.

America is a great band no matter who dies or who joins, because the music will always be the same.

@Jennifer Puhl What you don't seem to understand is the term "cover band". A cover band is a band that only plays or "covers" other artists. Take Linda Ronstadt, she sang "cover" versions of songs written or performed by other artists. Elvis Presley also didn't write music and I don't know if Alison Krauss has ever gotten around to writing her own music either. Anyway as far as George Martin went, his presence or oversight seems to have comforted Dewey and Gerry but I think his presence sent the band into a complete decline. The first thing you notice is the dorky cover on Holiday and the period clothes. And then look how stupid the band looked on the Hearts album or do you remember the fencing outfits? There were still some hits on Holiday and Hearts but the first three albums up to Hat Trick were stronger. The first two albums with George Martin seemed to have been he beginning of the end for the final two albums were pretty poor compared to the first five. So maybe the guys were in awe of a famous producer but sometimes a producer can send the music in the wrong direction. I mean, Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd sent Tom Dowd packing and that album was shelved. I never realized just how different "Street Survivors" would have been if they had included songs like Sweet Little Missy, When You Got Good Friends and so on. And the performances and the sound was very poor compared to what became the final product under another producer. But Tom Dowd had produced Gimme Back My Bullets and I think their live album too but at the end Ronnie had to take control back and America should have done the same thing. America just became some sort of Adult Contemporary act for a while and much less of a rock band.
