America - Caroline, No Lyrics

Where did your long hair go
Where is the girl I used to know
How could you lose that happy glow
Oh, Caroline no

Who took that look away
I remember how you used to say
You'd never change, but that's not true
Oh, Caroline you

Break my heart
I want to go and cry
It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die
Oh, Caroline why

Could I ever find in you again
Things that made me love you so much then
Could we ever bring 'em back once they have gone
Oh, Caroline no

Break my heart
I want to go and cry
It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die
Oh, Caroline why

" Carol I know" ------BW's 1st real love was a girl named Carol Mountain , & he wrote the song to----for, her. ---------------------------WolfSky9

  17. m.... M....

Well done. I prefer Carl Wilson’s lead vocal, to Brian’s. This is a terrific tribute.

thanks Jim, this is a great cover of a magnificent song which moves my soul everytime i hear it, i have commented to you before about my experiences as a musician, thanks again for bringing this to us, i last played with Marty Balin of Starship at the Cuttingroom here in Manhattan, remember, Atlanta Lady, Miracles, Sara etc.

    o.... h....

  22. J.... A....

    What a beautiful cover! :)

  23. G.... P....

I was inspired by this version to do my own and dedicated it to my wife celebrating 35 years together. This version is so haunting and with immense feeling - something I could never hope to replicate - in the early 70's I was ridiculed for playing the BB - now it is reversed. Thanks to everyone who appreciates Brian - bless you all.

    G.... P....

To G. Patel : Just so you know, you're not alone. In the late60's, & early 70's, not only was I ridiculed & laughed at for staying with my total support of The Boys, I actually got into a real fistfight over them, & my love of their music. It was at a party, the other guy was drunk, but it was a full-fledged, for-real, fight. When NO ONE respected them, I always did. ---------Always. --------------------So you were not alone. ----------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o Now.

  30. L.... M....

America does a great job on Brian's first solo release. Thank you.

    L.... M....

Yes, the 45 has only Brian Wilson's name on it. I still have my copy. Thank you for listening and commenting.
    Jim

    L.... M....

I always liked America, from the first. I had every album- all beginning with “H”.... Holiday, Hat Trick, Horse with no Name, History.... saw them only once. They seemed to explode onto our high school scene just as The Eagles did, and so there were , sadly , two “ camps”. I unabashedly loved both bands!!!! Still do. R.I.P. Glenn 💗

  31. w.... ....

    very good. I love it.

  32. m.... p....

Almost exact copy, with an additional chorus added. No artistic advancement, but homage, to a brilliant composition....

  33. G.... ....

*sigh* Dewey could sing anything to me....thanks for posting, I didn't have the album at hand and wanted to hear this one!

    G.... ....

    Gerry Beckley singing?
It's also been covered by Tim Schmidt, Glenn Frey (2 Eagles!), They Might Be Giants,  a Danish electronica duo named Owusu & Hannibal & a guy named Nick DeCaro in 1968. Thanks for the upload - I put all of these versions in my Beach Boys covered and covering playlist with the original!

    t.... ....

This is Dewey Bunnell singing lead (the other member of America). I love original from "Pet Sounds" where the passing train follows the song. Thank you for listening and for your comments.
    Jim

    t.... ....

@Nipstersongs1 I agree it must be Dewey

  52. B.... ....

@pause10two4 Wow, a lot of misinformation in this post.  Murry merely suggested the song be sped up a half-step.  It was ultimately Brian's decision to do this and it was done completely with his knowledge.  Murry was not their manager in 1966, (he had been kicked out by the group two years earlier) nor was he ever given any sort of "final say" in their music (Brian produced their music and had full control beginning with the "Surfin' USA" LP).  Also, no backing vocals for "Caroline, No" were ever recorded, so it would have been hard to take them out.

    B.... ....

Half step is pitch/key not tempo. Hurry was mean. I didn't know this cover existed. It's great!

    B.... ....

I know what half step means. The original recording was sped up so it was raised a half step in pitch.

    B.... ....

In the 60's, these were inextricably linked by the technology. Music was recorded on tape. To raise the pitch of music already on tape, recording engineers would literally speed up the tape, which increased both the tempo and raised the pitch of the music.

    B.... ....

They recorded BVs in 1996 when Timothy B sang it on Stars & Stripes, with strings by Jimmy Webb. Fanstastic version.

    B.... ....

To : " Behind The Sounds" : Sir, your entry is interesting to me----a lifetime fan of BW's music----&, it makes sense. As to the issue of " Backgrounds", I believe THAT was effectively settled on the group's '96 Nashville entry, with Timothy Schmidt's great lead , Jimmy Webb's orchestral arrangement, & The Boys-----well, Carl & Bruce, arranging vocal backgrounds on that iteration. To hear the '96 voices, is itself wonderful------to know it was the very last time we hear Carl's voice with them, is heartbreaking, but thankfully, present for all-time. ---------------WolfSky9, 72 y/'o

  53. N.... ....

Hi, Cat! So nice to hear from you! Thanks for all the info! America's version is wonderful. I think and Beach Boy history is just So interesting to me. What fun to hear new things. Thanks so much for listening!
    Jim

  54. p.... ....

I also appreciate the historical perspective your video gives this recording. To add to other comments, Tony Asher's original lyric was "Carol, I know." Reportedly, the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds release was a Brian Wilson solo, sped up by dad/then-mgr Murry Wilson to make Brian's voice sound "younger," then mastered without backing vocals -- all without Brian's knowledge or approval. There is a Youtube post of the song slowed, supposedly, to the original speed -- makes an interesting comparison.

    p.... ....

Sadly, & far too much like Colonel Tom Parker, Murry DID often attempt to alter some BB recordings . Parker was more successful, only because he was the Manager, but yes, Murry did the same thing. What I find inexplicable, is that Capitol Engineers had to know, & they did nothing!! Murry would never have messed with anything by Dennis, that's for certain. ------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o

  55. p.... ....

Jim, you know I love this one! Dewey Bunnell does an exceptional lead vocal & the Beach Boys' Jeff Foskett is one of the backing vocalists.

  56. N.... ....

I still have the original single that Brian Wilson released under his own name. I just love the song. Thanks so much for watching and listening John!
    Jim

  57. j.... ....

The original song had a flute and bass flute at the end of the song and America's version has a guitar solo that sounds very much like Glen Campbell playing to me. Is he mentioned in the credits? Very nice vocals by Dewey on this rendition. Thanks for posting, Jim! Great video as always! This song has always been one of my faves!

    John

  58. j.... ....

I was reading the wiki on the original version of this song from the Pet Sounds album and found a lot of interesting things. The percussion intro always messed me up because it sounds like the singing begins on the wrong beat. Turns out that the percussion used were a tambourine and an empty water bottle found in the studio! Also, "Caroline, No" was originally released as a solo single by Brian Wilson before Pet Sounds was released. Glen Campbell played guitar on the original version.

  59. N.... ....

Raining here too, Heather. I'm so glad this song and video helped to brighten your day a little. I love this song and it is the final song on the great Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album...with the train and the dogs barking...just wonderful. Thank you so much for watching and listening to this one!
    Jim

  60. L.... ....

Love this group, Jim! Before you exposed me to more of their great stuff, all I knew was "Horse With No Name"...this one is great! Love all your backgrounds, they're beautiful, and relaxing...and very tempting! Thanks so much for sharing and brightening a rainy, chilly day :))

  61. N.... ....

Me Too! Thank you so much for listening!
