If they could buy up and destroy all the existing copies of "Alanis" and "Now is the Time," they would. Not to mention Alanis herself isn't that hot on them; she's said she has no desire to go back because she claims JLP and everything forward really represents her as an artist.

This classic Can-con pop; one derivative sample after another, trying to imitate the music coming out of the USA or Europe but with an 18-month lag. Robin Sparkles was real.

Lol, is it bad that I kinda like her early songs, they do have something to say although not as eloquently stated and less artistic, still the songs, for what they are (pop songs) are quite good..... oh and "Let's go to the Maaaaaaall!"

Wow! She looks exactly like a younger version of Julia Roberts at 55 sec. in this video. I love that outfit she is wearing too. For some reason what she looks like and what she is wearing reminds me of the movie, Pretty Woman. :) I love her hairstyle here. I wonder why she didn't keep it. Not saying she isn't pretty or anything. It is just I think she looks a lot better with this hairstyle than her recent one.

@mattgosens she really is an artist, sweetie...but most artists have to be more commercial and less genuine when they want to make money. Her 'real' stuff is what no one buys. No comment on the anthem :)

@mattgosens this was a long time ago but I disagree. Jagged Little pill appealed to the post grunge crowd- the four albums after that? I didn't see morissette grasping for the style of the day rather I saw her create it ushering in the likes of other female artist to the forefront. This accusation just gets old when Alanis hasn't been the top of the charts for ever or has seemed to care for that matter. I agree not a fan of her national anthem.

@mattgosens exactly! Alanis' thought process for Jagged Little Pill: "Hey, grunge is in, why not put some grease in my hair and get mad?" I don't know how Alanis has a following, and none of my friends who bought Jagged Little Pill as angstful teenage girls still listen to it. I haven't heard 'You ought to know' on the radio in years and that's a wonderful thing.

@mattgosens this is the most absurd comment ever about alanis..any alanis fan knows she follows her own guidelines and rules..each album is so far away from the current popular music of the time..its too clear she's never followed after any normal way of writing or releasing/promoting an album or trying to give into expectations to become more popular..so she had a teenage career that was very bubblegum pop, but do we all stay the person we were at the age of 15?

Make no mistake. Everything she has ever done has been just as commercial and calculated for the time period as this was. Just different styles to capitalize on the better selling styles of the day. Brilliant business woman, but no artist.

I am a huge fan of Alanis, but we Americans did not know of her until Jagged Little Pill.....and I love all she does, but this is not among my favorites of her early stuff, the lyrics are cheesy....not the worst song but not a fave

well, perhaps cause it's a pure commercial, formatted song with no real feeling in !
Her actuals songs are feeling full, sounding real, not "formatted", just see how many albumsshe sells by now !

Yes - she had a career as 'Alanis' and previous to that she was on a Canadian children's tv show called 'You can't do that on television'.

Not to get all philosophical and what not but I like this song. The lyrics sorta showed that her record company tried 2 put her in this "plastic" mold of a pop star.
