Alan Parsons Project, The - You Don't Believe Lyrics

My eyes with your vision
My choice but always your decision
My play with your direction
Well it's my lead but always your connection

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe

My words, your expression
My land, always your possession
My song, your production
My expense is always your deduction

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe

And the face I see before me
Is both sides of a mirror
You really know you've got a hold on me
And the face you're looking into
Is both sides of a window
And any way you look you see through me

My fame, your reflection
My weakness always your protection
Well it's my terms on your conditions
And they're my tunes but they're your compositions

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe

Has there ever been an official video for this song? I found out it was used as the opening theme for an Italian TV programme in the 1980s (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5ZgSDVJYOg ), where it was accompanied by a video reminiscent of Magritte and Monty Python, but I can't figure out whether it was shot for the TV programme itself or was actually the official video, just modified by adding the opening credits.

Loved it then. Still loving it now. The engineer from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" has done well on his own.

Found this today, love it. BOC's Astronomy from their imaginos album has a similar rhythm and feel. Love it.

  7. A.... P....

Gotta love that voice of Lenny'.

  8. e.... t....

I disagree. "You Don't Believe" isn't horrible at all— it sounds like the musical montage of a training sequence in a 1980s high school wrestling movie. Best song off Ammonia Ave. Sang it at my wedding 5/5/86.

  9. j.... e....

This song should be called the "-Shon" song. Why? Well...because of its construct-SHONNN...! :)

Perhaps you just don't get Alan Parsons. This song could represent any Relationship in Life that is Parasitic. Perhaps you are the Topic.

  12. P.... M....

    what year is it from

    P.... M....

    February 7 1984

  13. S.... D....

This song is Eric Woolfson's message to Alan. If you ever hope to understand their relationship, this one is the key. The original video, which was incredible, was forever deleted from the internet by Alan Parsons...I wonder why. Don't get me wrong, I am one of the biggest Woolfson/Parsons fans ever, but this relationship was...complicated. The music that resulted will never be surpassed.

    S.... D....

Alan never, ever, performs this great song live. Period. Discuss this among yourselves.

    S.... D....

I cant find any mention of it

    S.... D....

You are correct. It is Alan's almost aspergerish nature to be 'certain' what sounds perfect and what doesn't. And he had control of the final product, leaving Eric, the creator, without significant input, at times. And so this song was written, a rather scathing indictment. But Alan, being a master of a great recording, rendered this perfectly. I recently saw the APP band in Lancaster PA. I was somewhat disheartened that Alan did not mention Eric even once, the entire evening. I guess he can hold a grudge, even against a dead man.

  24. C.... J....

Elliott Cook.......... Well Sir, your comment confirms the old saying...."There is no way to please everybody" ....... Music is a subjective 'matter', making a statement like yours is not reasonable, at best.

Elliott Cook.......... Well Sir, your comment confirms the old saying...."There is no way to please everybody" ....... Music is a subjective 'matter', making a statement like yours is not reasonable, at best.

  26. J.... Q....

the cheapness of the instrumentation on this, coupled with the atrocious singing by Zakatek, leads to my conclusion that the only Ammonia avenue song worse than this, and possibly the only Parsons song worse than this, is the truly unbearable Let Me Go Home.

    J.... Q....

    Cheapness? What do you mean?

    J.... Q....

What the hell is "cheap" about this.......... you could say this about most of the '80s tripe. but don't think this is in that category

    J.... Q....

The song is led from beginning to end in a simply but effective way; it's haunting rhytmics and the stunning dramatic voice of Zakatek which let this; if you don't understand it's your problem, don't put the blame on Zakatek

    My favorite A.P.P song

  29. M.... ....

    Wonderful song.

  30. D.... K....

I have a best of CD of theirs and this song is my favorite from them.

  31. D.... B....

It's not exploiting, because it gets his work out, and perhaps more young uns'll be able to listen to some great stuff---and buy it.

  32. D.... V....

  33. C.... ....

Still enjoying this song 30 plus years later/

  34. D.... K....

    minor hit ya say
what song on there was better?

    D.... K....

I see your point but I'm far more partial to Dancing on a High Wire.

  35. d.... ....

Wow, found an old cassette that I recorded from back in the 80s and this song was on it. I hadn't heard this song in probably over 20 years. A forgotten classic!!!

  36. M.... B....

    Nothing but love of music

  37. s.... ....

Getting Parson's work out to people who might never hear it otherwise is hardly exploitation, it's a public service.  More people need to hear some of the "minor" songs from this band.

    s.... ....

This is one of his best ones.

  38. R.... L....

This is a great song and the lryics are haunting yet so creative.and beautiful.

  39. b.... ....

Mr Parson?  How about Mr. Wolfson, he was half of APP!

    b.... ....

Dead, but equally vital to the music created.

  40. R.... L....

  45. J.... ....

Please don't feel as if you are exploiting - I own (have bought) this music (like most I listen to on YouTube) but appreciate building in into my lists. Thanks for the uploads!

  46. s.... ....

I fell in love with that song the first time I listened to it....still love it today, as much as I did back then!

  51. .... ....

This one song has in many ways enriched my life and is most definitely in the top 10m favorite songs of my life. Maybe even in the top 5. Can never get enough of it...

  52. R.... D....

Lenny is great on stage too. I saw him here on youtube-Alan Parsons First Concert.

  55. S.... M....

I had forgotten all about this excellent song - Summer 1984, my first Walkman, playing Ammonia Avenue again and again while looking over the shores of Lake Okanagan in BC, thinking of a girl who was far away and out of reach, both figuratively and literally.

  56. j.... ....

    its the truth

  57. j.... ....

    story of my life,,,,,,

  58. F.... M....

marvelous song, integrating the 3 facets of music so well....the singer, the instruments, and the lyrics...seldom are all 3 elements done so well.....bravo APP

  59. J.... W....

Amen to that brother. Love Lenny's voice as well!

  61. J.... V....

This album is nothing short of amazing.

  62. J.... L....

A lot of satisfying output from this person who really seems to like being challenged by experimentation (due to the "project" following his name). I think this is one of the 5 most successful songs with GAMES PEOPLE PLAY being the tops.

  63. g.... c....

    i not robot...

  64. c.... ....

Lenny should have been a superstar

    c.... ....

    are you SIRIUS? heh.

  65. W.... ....

  66. a.... ....

    10 dislikes!!!!! FUCKING WANKERS !

  67. a.... ....

    10 dislikes!!!!!

  68. T.... M....

he was behind pink Floyd Very genius

    T.... M....

AP is indeed a genius. He worked as a sound engineer on Dark Side of the Moon and was awarded a Grammy for his work. But claiming that he was behind Pink Floyd is giving him too much credit.

  69. a.... ....

@TheCoherentSolutions IMHO, AP and Eric are like what B&F might have sounded like without the cynicism and jazz background... How interesting that my 2 favorite groups were each a pair of geniuses who surrounded themselves with expert studio talent varying per album.... Woolfson was about the heart; Fagen was about cool. It is not possible for humans to be as cool as Donald Fagen.

  70. D.... A....

@alanparsonsfan Dude, you're right with your line-up! In my opinion B&F are even more skilled in letting genius sound natural. I've noticed that some musical training definitely helps in appreciating more complex compositions. I haven't listened to APP for a decade or so, started loving progressive house and picked APP up again and am thrilled. Quality always survives.

  71. M.... ....

@Dunkleosteus9, it's not religious, it's about how we don't believe in the illuminati

  72. c.... ....

god damn that lenny is an amazing singer! APP is only meant for those with unconditionally worldly musical taste...like the caviar of music...whcih is why most people will underrate such amazing progressive music. (and dont expect anything from the youth of today but ignorance and the worst taste...but dont blame them, it is what theyve bin subjected to...lets feel sorry for them cuz theyl never know music they it was meant to be..the way we know growing up in a time of "real" music.

  73. D.... ....

    @Dunkleosteus9 , I don't think so.

  74. M.... C....

    god this great...

  75. R.... B....

    another great song by APP.

  76. R.... ....

I am truly so, so happy to find all of you appreciative alan parsons fans! i didnt know you were out there.. i thought i was the only one besides my dad on plant earth with any sort of brain in their heads to realise how genious and astounding his music is..

  77. M.... C....

oh yeah! I am so glad I found this song.. thanks, thanks, thanks.,,

  78. v.... p....

Encontraremos a faltar un Genio como Eric Woolfson.

  79. W.... H....

La voz es de Lenny Zakatek, el genio Alan!!!

  80. M.... R....

    Wow. Eric Wolfson's a Monster!

  81. j.... ....

    it is not bad!

  82. N.... ....

You might be concerned about exploiting his work.. but having these posted on you tube, allows me to know if I want to buy the song on ITUNES... I have already bought one song from Alan parsons.. and I am shopping to see if any more of them get my attention,, since I am not overly familiar with their music

  83. J.... A....

simply the best song of all time (superb lyrics awesome production by the master)

  84. 9.... ....

grandiosi, la musica piu' sensazionale di sempre,

  85. d.... ....

it's an industrial plant (yes, insulated pipelines). but the aim of the picture is to seem similar to the head of a typical seventies japanese cartoon robot... doesn't it?

  86. a.... ....

Yes, certainly about Emerson and Wakeman...

  87. G.... ....

Hang on, call Alan, Lenny, the other Eric, John, and so on... tribute! And make it good :-)

Godspeed Eric, I'll miss you, very, very much.

  88. m.... ....

    RIP Eric Woolfson.

  89. S.... ....

@vinto34 Yeah man!!! this song and I wouldn't want to be like you my favorites!!

  90. Z.... H....

Donald F. and Walter B. are back on speaking terms. Davies-Hodgson talked about a reunion in the early 90s but after a bit of work together, they drifted apart again. Hodgson turned up as a writer on Yes's Talk album on a song from that album around that time.

  91. v.... ....

the great lenny zakatek on vocals...did a great job.

  92. m.... ....

Actually, it did. In fact this song was released on "The Best Of Alan Parsons Project Volume 1" in 1983, a year before this album came out in 1984. This song was completed in between albums, after Eye In The Sky and before Ammonia Avenue, it really never had an album to go on, so they just added to Ammonia Ave the next year.
kind of clever really, people bought the "Best Of" with this song, then bought Ammonia Ave with it too. same song, double profit :D

  93. s.... ....

I don't think APP has anything to do with charts, leave charts to naddona, justine timberblake, guns'n lilies...those people

  94. D.... ....

The strange thing about "You Don't Believe" is that, it charted at #54 in the U.S., and it's among the highest-charting singles The Alan Parsons Project ever released, even reaching the Top 15 on the American rock charts, and yet, it never shows up (if not, occasionally) on any "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits" albums...

  95. B.... Q....

You're good at underrating too... hehe.
    What about Hodgson-Davies?
And Fagen-Becker are surely not THAT remote behind...

  96. a.... ....

AP and Woolfson the 2 most underrated musical geniuses of the 70's-80's. No question. Only folks that come even remotely close to them are Fagen and Becker and Don Henley...
