Alan Parsons Project, The - To One In Paradise Lyrics

IF I could see the sky above
And my mind could be set free
As wild white horses reached the shore
I'd stand alone and oversee

And if the bush before me burns
Should I turn my eyes away
And still the voices I can hear
As clear to me as light of day

I believed in my dreams
Nothing could change my mind
Now I know what they mean
How could I be so blind

Cold sands of time
(Winds that blow as cold as ice
Sounds that come in the night)
Shall hide what is left on me
(Come from Paradise)

I've been through times when no one cared
(Words that were mine)
I've seen clouds in empty skies
When one kind word meant more to me
(Shall last as a memory)
Than all the love in Paradise

I believed in my dreams
Nothing could change my mind
Till I found what they mean
Nothing can save me now

Alan Parsons Project, The To One In Paradise Comments
  1. A.... C....

This album was initially an experiment, instead it lead to one of the greatest studio groups of all time. A string of brilliant concept albums followed.

  2. M.... K....

My all time favorite after the Fab 4 of Liverpool!!!

  3. A.... C....

    🎶💋🎶❤ APP 💋

  4. A.... K....

Ones of favourite lyric from the Alan Parson Project. Many songs are better..

  5. a.... ....

An image of a Mummy wrapped in master recording tape, endless spinning round.

  6. k.... J....

The lead vocal on this track was sung by Terry Sylvester, from The Hollies.
Terry replaced Graham Nash in 1968 as Graham Nash went on to be the "N" in CSNY.
As a member of the Hollies, Terry was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Terry still performs today (2019)...is also a good chap too!!

  7. o.... ....

One of my favorite songs, ever. I used to play it to fall asleep, it was so relaxing.

  8. A.... F....

This is not the 1976 version , it is the 1987 remix, you can tell from Second verse chorus and enanched drum sounds.... Anyway sound qualit is very poor

    A.... F....

Yes i noticed and thought that too . It might explain the dislikes !

  9. M.... S....

    #108 on Hot 100

  10. J.... I....

    Alan Parsons

    Beautiful!

  14. E.... B....

    .......A TIMELESS CLASSIC FROM 1976..........!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. k.... ....

In 8th grade, my English teacher played this album for us. I became an APP fan immediately. Oh, and that was in 1977, just in time for I Robot!!!

  16. J.... Z....

    Very wonderfull song

  17. P.... R....

To think that rubbish like Katy Perry has 100's of millions of hits for each song on youtube, and something brilliant like this only has several thousand hits tells us all we need to know about our declining culture.

  18. M.... F....

This album would sound a lot nicer if there were no stupid pop ups during the middle of a song or at any time while listening to it.

  19. b.... j....

Thanks. Remember, and justice for Maura Murray.

  20. P.... M....

    Fantastic.

  21. R.... Y....

Y todos mis días son trances
Y todos mis sueños son nocturnos
Estan donde tus ojos grises observan
    Donde brillan tus pasos
    Juntos a que etéreas danzas
    En qué eternas corrientes

  22. P.... ....

you can actually hear alan parsons sing in this record as one of the backing vocalist around 2:15

  23. N.... L....

    its really lovely

  24. A.... Z....

He knows all the mystery about the truth, only a few people give us .

  25. A.... F....

I love the photos in the upload.

  26. w.... ....

Beautiful Images with Beautiful Music ! Hurrah !

  27. P.... R....

Stunning, beautiful song. The boys choir in the background like water, lapping on the side of a boat. Pure genius

  28. M.... R....

Mix right out of I'm Not In Love.

  29. P.... R....

One of the most exquisitely beautiful songs of all time. I rate it up there with the opening chorus of J.S. Bach's St Matthew's Passion. (Check that one out too, if you don't know it ! ) Sublime.

  30. s.... ....

    always loved this song.

  31. K.... R....

When one kind word meant more to me ~ (be at peace).......Shall last as a memory ....

  32. P.... R....

    Sublime.

  33. J.... L....

Just a good album and a nice way to end it.

  34. m.... ....

in my opinion, absolutely Alan Parsons'best album!!

    m.... ....

    of course it is! :-)

    m.... ....

i would rank "Turn....." up there alongside, another masterpiece.

    m.... ....

According to me is "The Turn of a Friendly Card".

    m.... ....

That would rank a very high second. None of his albums have sucked. But those two stand out among ALL albums.

  35. U.... ....

    Thanks, DieSinister!

  36. d.... b....

Interesting that this was just a conceptual album to show some new recording techniques and ideas for music to go directionally. I just love it. Especially "A Cask of Amontillado". Is it possible we could convince both Clinton and Trump to enter the catacombs from opposite directions and..... Oh, such a delightfully EVIL thought to have them spend the rest of their lives chained together in the dark!

    d.... b....

You bring the brick trowel, I'll pitch in a couple bags of cement...

  37. K.... Z....

    well done

  38. R.... W....

I asked Alan Parsons recently here in my home town of San Francisco what inspired him to write such songs as this one and others like Day After Day and Time and many others and he credited Eric Woolfson. I love them both. RIP Eric.

    R.... W....

Hermoso toda mi vida los he admirado. Esa combinación de clásico con etéreo celestial medieval y rock nadie la tiene. Fantastico Alan Parsons Project.

  39. J.... V....

    By Edgar Allan Poe...

  40. J.... V....

Thou wast that all to me, love,
For which my soul did pine—
A green isle in the sea, love,
       A fountain and a shrine,
All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers,
And all the flowers were mine.

Ah, dream too bright to last!
Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise
    But to be overcast!
A voice from out the Future cries,
    “On! on!”—but o’er the Past
(Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies
    Mute, motionless, aghast!

    For, alas! alas! with me
The light of Life is o’er!
    No more—no more—no more—
(Such language holds the solemn sea
To the sands upon the shore)
       Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree,
    Or the stricken eagle soar!

And all my days are trances,
       And all my nightly dreams
Are where thy grey eye glances,
       And where thy footstep gleams—
    In what ethereal dances,
       By what eternal streams

    J.... V....

Great Lyrics!! Awesome, !! My Man!.... ; )

  41. J.... L....

I own this album on vinyl and CD. It is my favorite from Alan Parsons.

    J.... L....

I also have this album on both CD and LP record and I keep them in pristine condition. The LP of it that I have is an original from when the first run of the album was first released. It is quite a piece of APP history because it still has the shrink wrap plastic on it with just the open side slit open enough to get the record out. The plastic still has the old 1975 K-Mart sticker on it. The price is shown as $1.89 and I bought the record with money made from hunting down soda bottles and cashing them in at the grocery store. Wow, to go back to those days of such prices and incredible music. And yes, I do agree that this Edgar Allan Poe album is their best album. I, Robot comes in a close second.

    J.... L....

This has always been my top #1 favorite album since it was released. It is perfect in every way.

  42. S.... S....

And all my days are trances
    And all my nightly dreams
And where thy dark eye glances
    And where thy footsteps gleams
    In what ethereal dances
    By what eternal streams

  43. R.... A....

Hey DieSinister - THIS VIDEO ROCKS ! Nice interpretation and a lovely arrangement from Alan Parsons n A. E. Poe. He has been uniquely successful at this task. I've always loved the children's voices and Woolfson's in the background ready to take the spotlight. Is there any way to include the entire poem? I hope so.

  44. J.... ....

If only I could have known then what I know now- but that is the essence of life, isn't it- when one kind word means more.....

  45. J.... ....

why post the date? this stuff is timeless

  46. P.... ....

i biked a couple miles to the record store as kid when this came out, with my saturday allowance, 5 dollars after mowing the lawn, it was the first 'dark' album i ever bought. and at the time i had things like black sabbath and pink floyd, yet i didn't see them as dark, they were more just entertainingly dark-- this was deep sad kind of dark with more sincere rage and wonder of all the suffering of human history epitomized in it. i heard excerpt on the radio beforehand and knew nothing about alan parsons, just thought it had to be great

    P.... ....

@Preliminimal Of all places to be introduced to this album, my car broke down and I hopped into the cab of the tow truck. The sun had set by then, things outside were getting quiet. The driver asked if it was OK to turn back on his stereo. Oh, wow. Kicking sound system. When I asked, the driver told me the album title and that AP was the engineer behind Dark Side of The Moon; I heard the similarities. This was about 1978/79.
You bet I was at the mall that weekend looking for the LP.. I transferred it to cassette with dbx encoding which my car deck had - and about 400 Watts. It was my favourite to play late at night on the road by myself out in the country where I could take it all in - the whole album every time. The same with his other best thematic albums. They sound odd heard out of context in a shuffled playlist (don't do that people, LOL).

    P.... ....

That's a great story. Thank you for sharing.

    P.... ....

Gorgeous music. Beautiful lyrics. APP. So many of their songs are as good today as they were back in the day and have always been a salve for my soul.

  47. S.... S....

One of my first LP´s i bought, ( when i was young). This was my fave ♥  And always will be.

  48. K.... ....

I like The Albums: I robot (I robot- I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You- Day after day), Pyramid (Voyager-What Goes Up ), Eve (Lucifer-You Lie Down With Dogs-secret Garden), The Turn of a Friendly Card is a masterpiece (I like all album), Eye in the sky (Sirius-Eye in the sky- Psychobabble-Mammagamma) But To One in Paradise (Tales of Mystery and Imagination Edgar Allan Poe) is Great!!! ahead of the genius, bestial, a musical idea, no ... this beautiful song has no name to express themselves. Simply the best.

  49. r.... ....

Came here from listening to The Hollies - Terry Sylvester sings this.

  50. J.... k....

    incredible song

Dedicata ad Eric Woolfson (morto esattamente 5 anni fa: 2.12.09)

  53. z.... ....

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL video put to this deeply moving song and Poe's brilliant poem at the end. This made me cry.

  54. F.... C....

The 3 who voted "I don't like it" can go to Hell!!!

    F.... C....

they probably just hit the wrong button !  they don't get to burn for ever in the dreaded of all places where "To One in Paradise" and "Siren Song" are never heard.  LOL

    F.... C....

    Dude , that’s harsh.

    F.... C....

    Fernando Catan lol.

    F.... C....

    the dude is an idiot

  55. R.... ....

I never had the kind of dreams attainable by working to make them so. I never had any dream of being something, anything...
Still this songs speaks to me. Maybe a dream will come true even though I'm unaware...

  56. W.... F....

A tune that is as sublime, as resplendent, as My Eternal Love, My Barbra Rose (in Paradise since Nov. 22, 2010).

  57. b.... ....

    gorgeous..what a dreamy song

  58. R.... ....

    No-one Will ever Know Me!

  59. m.... ....

another great song but sounding very pink floydish as do many of his songs

    m.... ....

+mloon1313 YOU have to be kidding! Now, we all trust that WE ALL DO KNOW that Alan Parsons produced the "Dark Side of the Moon" recording for Pink Floyd? Ah couldn't dismiss, demean or criticize either Pink Floyd or Alan Parsons iver mloon. Both 'r inspired, uniquely original AYAND infinitely interesting in their own really cool ways. Oh, and NO FLIES on dear Edgar Allan either - right all? He was just 'another great' whose large variety of works r aww superb as well in' deserves some seriously less shallow considerations. But - highly regarding A. P. - big bravo to ya fur combining E.A.P. w dark underground hit machinery. Who'd'a thunk that that could IVER be done AND SO WOND'RFULLY MASTERFULLY ? I've been sitting on the edge of my chair non stop since THIS song came out and you've niver lit me down. SO, in awe inspired appreciation (and with infinite reverence to the towering Edgar Allan Poe too,) I THANK YOU BOTH agin in agin! PERIOD P.S. In mloon, ewe might't feelt the music a lil mower deeply if you'd'a furst read "Why the Foreigner Carries His Right Arm in a Sling" and discover'd some cool comedies. THIN, you kud sync the Dark Side in The Wizard* in purplexin' wonderment, in THIN, HOPEFULLY, laugh at this drivel triggered response. *In the sync is among the best laughs I'd iver imagined ----- IVER - whither it's bullshit or furREEEEL - don't matter! It is what it is - and as funny as it gits. The laughter was utterly contaygious at one fine point in the amayzin' pro-ducshun.

  60. J.... H....

What a great video compilation to go with this.
    Thank you :-)

  61. T.... k....

If Eric an Alan had not created the Project we would have to be inspired by someone else. But i have not found anything comparable.

    T.... k....

    e.l.o imho is a tie

    T.... k....

    Moody Blues and 10cc

    T.... k....

Alan Parson’s Project, ELO, Moody Blues, older Genesis, Al Stewart and to some extent Yes and Pink Floyd come to my mind when I think of story telling, mysterious sounding music from this time period.

  62. T.... N....

    De..Devin, is that you?

  63. B.... ....

Alan Parsons...Master of mysterious and fanciful sounds. What a perfect song....what a perfect album.  No one else can combing a classic sound with classic literature the way he can.  Everything about it screams Classic.  Nice, touching video...good job!

    B.... ....

Except Alan Parsons didn't do this solo. The Alan Parsons Project were as much Alan Parsons as it was Eric Woolfson. As a matter of fact, Eric Woolfson came up with the idea to do this album.

    B.... ....

I added a comment, Norris...and don't know where it went.  It was something like this:  I realize Alan Parson's Project used  lots of different soloist.  I believe he did a small amount of the lead vocal work...mostly harmony vocals.  So, you are correct but my comment was made in a general term referring to the group...I wasn't referring to him as an individual but the group since it is called Alan Parson's Project.  Thanks for the addition to what I said.  We certainly can agree we enjoy the music and the many facets that make it up!

    B.... ....

@BeckyLMC My apologies for the mix-up! It just happens rather frequently that people dis-acknowledge the other amazing recurring musicians that played for this group (John Miles, Chris Rainbow, Ian Bairnson) that you can never be too sure!

    B.... ....

Norris, Anytime, anyone...give me a shake if you think I am wrong or don't understand.  No problem.  Learn, learn, learn...I can always learn from others.  No problem!

  68. A.... W....

  69. A.... W....

I've so often said this is my life's theme song! This is who I am, and what I always seem to feel!

  70. A.... S....

I still have the original vinyl of mine that I bought just a few days after the release of this album. It even still has the cellophane wrap that is cut only at the edge where the record is taken out of the box and it has the original Sound Warehouse sticker on it showing the price. $2.49! Can't get NUTHIN' for that price these days! The record itself is in pristine condition and, of course, with the jacket having the cellophane it is also in pristine condition. It is my most prized record.

  71. F.... D....

This is my favorite song, and Poe is my favorite writer. In all, this is truly one of the most beautiful sings I have ever heard.

  72. i.... ....

    beautiful.

  73. T.... R....

Thanks for posting. This is from the 1987 CD remix release--you can tell by all the extra reverb (I also have the original 1976 vinyl LP--yeah, I'm THAT old).
