Alabama - Church In The Wildwood Lyrics

Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale

How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning
To listen to the clear ringing bells
It's tones so sweetly are calling
Oh, come to the church in the vale

Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale

There she sleeps close by the church in the valley
Lies one that I love so well
She sleeps, sweetly sleeps, neath the willow
Disturb not her rest in the vale

Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale

There close by the site of that loved one
Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloom
When farewell hymns shall be chanted
I shall rest by her side in the tomb

Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale
As the little brown church in the vale

I'm very sorry. Love Alabama, but they "country-ied" up this beautiful hymn much too much. The snare was not appropriate. :(

That was the title song of the first bluegrass gospel album in Canada, recorded in Halifax Nova Scotia by my uncles ,Erdie and Ray Phillips

I'M 82 YEARS OLD. AS AN EIGHT YEAR OLD, I REMEMBER HELPING MY GRANDPA WALK HIS MILK COWS ALONG THE COBB SWITCH TEXAS ROADSIDE WHILE THEY ATE THE TALL GRASS. MY JOB WAS TO WALK BETWEEN THEM AND THE HIGHWAY AND GUIDE THEM WITH A LONG CANE FISHING POLE. WE WALKED WITH THEM TO LITTLE CHURCH WHILE THEY SLOWLY ATE THE JOHNSON GRASS. WHEN WE REACHED THE CHURCH, GRANDPA LET ME GO INSIDE AND PLAY THE PIANO. IT TOOK ALL DAY. THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF THOSE DAYS DURING WWII.

    B.... N....

I am so glad you have the memory of that church! God bless you!

Loved when Andy Griffith sang this song on his TV show

    A.... R....

Couldn't agree more. Imagine a hit tv show doing that today.

    A.... R....

The episode that Andy sang this in was called Man In A Hurry. Andy and Barney harmonized perfectly in that number. One of the greatest scenes in television.
