Al Stewart - Rocks In The Ocean Lyrics

On a night just like this, in a place far away
He met with a giri in the spring
And something about him just turned her around
As though she were caught on a string
And being so young they held on to each other
To see what the moment might bring
He loved her then in a secretive way
Not showing his care or his need
She stayed beside him and looked to the day
He would somehow begin to be free
In the chill of the night she would hold him and say
This is how they always should be

Rocks in the ocean, waves on the sea
Keep it in mind,
If love comes unsatisfied, don't forget me
Don't forget me

And so he come to depend on her more
Though the lesson was still to be learned,
Taking for granted the gift that she gave
As though it were something he'd earned
And she for her part growing slowly away
From a love that was never returned
Then came the day that he never foresaw
When he woke to find she was gone
He followed her then to the ends of the world
To tell her how much he'd been wrong
But the more he called her, the more she was lost
Leaving only the words of her song

Rocks in the ocean, waves on the sea
Keep it in mind,
If love comes unsatisfied, don't forget me
Don't forget me

He still listens out for her foot on the stair
As he looks for her down through the years
And the friends that he had have all left one by one
For their words weren't reaching his ears
He chooses instead now to wander alone
To a song that only he hears

Rocks in the ocean, waves on the sea
Keep it in mind,
If love comes unsatisfied, don't forget me
Don't forget me

Great album. Yes, there's more to Al than Year of the Cat! Saw him play an acoustic set in Aberdeen
a few years ago. he was brilliant. Asked the audience to request any song - which he dutifully did.

As an amateur I've sung this tune more than a hundred times in some bars.

Al Stewart is so profound - I'm currently dealing with a breakup of sorts, and he just GETS it so well here

What a heartbreaker of a ballad! Two lovers are lost to each other in many different ways! Oh, that guitar solo that begins at 3:07 with the crashing of the ocean waves is simply priceless. (It sounds like it cries out for the soul of the land of England as the ship sails in distant waters.) The solo then returns at 4:17; so do the crashing waves.

Why isn''t AL stewart recognised for the talent he is?? Most people only know him for year of the cat & time passages, bur his catalogue of gret songs is just amazing.

But he is. By you, and me. His genius and talent haven't gone unnoticed; I kinda think of him as my little secret, y'know?

    G.... M....

Meg, I do find it frustrating that so few know of his greatness. It IS like a special secret that one carries. Luckily, my two older daughters and my two brothers are fans with whom I can discuss his music and lyrics. My oldest girl's FIL was shocked to realize that he had not discovered one of the true greats when I loaned him a few CD's last year. Al's catalog blew him away.

    🎼 Al Stewart
Al started his career on the 1960s London folk scene, performing alongside Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Roy Harper and Richard Thompson, and sharing a flat with Paul Simon.

He became known for combining folk-rock melodies with delicately woven tales of characters and events from history. By the late 1970s, Al was a star of FM radio, enjoying two huge platinum-selling singles (and albums of the same titles): Year of the Cat and Time Passages.

Al will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's event.

I think it has something to do with his voice - it is not an appealing, powerful voice but kind of 'ordinary' and this sometimes detracts from the quality of the writing. I think he could do better with a more distinctive vocal artist to interpret his lyrics. The production is always top quality, lyrics insightful and poetic-it is just the vocal IMO.

Michael Gorman ....His songs are pretty special. Wonder why none of them have been covered?

Al Stewart's greatest song - the chorus is amazing! Love Al! Love this song!

jonnoms, thanks for sharing. While the critics didn't think much of 24 Carrots, we true Al fans know better. "Rocks in the Ocean" for me has always been the standout tune from the album. All these years later, the Celtic chord progressions are still haunting, not to mention the lyrics, which for me have become more prophetic with the passing of time. This song demonstrates not to judge Al by his cover.

  18. s.... ....

Crazy Al Allen like to make outrageous statement in hopes of getting attention. Maybe his mommy didn't hug enough?

Congratulations! Your story is a wonderful one, and Al would love to hear it in person, I'm sure. Oh yes, great song. This is the song that grabbed my one daughter, and convinced her that her Al-obsessed dad was NOT nuts. She is now a fellow Al Stewart fan!

well this is one of his love kind of song.I like his music combination of history and nature which makes it wonderful to hear and feel.Simply great.

  23. C.... C....

Love Al Stewart's songs. Along with great musicians his song writing brings periods of time and place to the listener that are so evocative, material that many song writers would neither think of or contemplate putting to music. The music establishment . . . who needs them as it is to us that it matters!! Check out Al with Laurence Juber doing night train to Munich - Brilliant!! youtube.com/watch?v=Z4doIL9CQUE

  24. s.... c....

way beyond remarkable , a timeless classic !!!

  25. R.... L....

This is still one of my favorite Al Stewart songs....

  26. L.... M....

Love this song! First heard it in 1984 when a friend lent me the 24 parrots/carrots album. I had just met this wonderfull girl and this song made me feel what it would be like to lose her. I didn't, i married her instead and we are still together. Al is so wrongly ignored by the music establishment.

  27. M.... G....

another great song from a world class songwriter.
