Al Stewart - Clifton In The Rain Lyrics
The rain came down like beads
Bouncing on the noses of the
People from the train
A flock of salty ears
Sparkled in the traffic lights
I took my love to Clifton in the rain
And all along the way
Wanderers in overcoats with
Collars on parade
And steaming in the night
The listeners in the Troubadour
Guitar player weaves a willow strain
I took my love to Clifton in the rain
I saw your movie
Wondered if you really felt that way
Do you ever fear
The images of Hollywood?
Have you felt a shadow of its pain?
I thought of you in Clifton in the rain

I love this song in the winter
Wonderful - this one - and Kathy's Song were the first I ever learned to play - after learning how to travis pick... Can never cease to learn - Stewart and Simon - the BEST - especially at this late stage in life!
September... 1979... Off to school in my big rental house in Sherman TX. ... All alone with my vinyl... Alone... Met my wife a month later... Love at first sight... Never forget it. Al Stewart was my only friend.
Sometimes less is more.
The flavor of this song reminds me of Simon and Garfunkle. No surprises there, they were roommates in England and he called upon them when he came to the US to "become a star" (as urged by his agent :D) . He tells such engaging stories in his concerts. Kind of like he's just sitting in your living room, talking about old times. <3
I love this song. One of Al Stewart's best I think. Actually my most favourite - and I know them all!
such a pretty song, just vocal and acoustic guitar.
Truly music for an inclement day.
+Bryan Southern yup
Yeah absolutely right on, I 1st heard this and bedsit ter images track on a rainy late afternoon in a small bedroom autumn 1978,perfect settings, still clear in my mind. Also "year of the cat" is a perfect winter album, listening on a dark frosty night with clear sky & full moon, particularly "on the border" just perfect!
i have this rare album and like it ,lots of memories....you don't find so much titles from this album on youtube...
Oh I have such a fondness for this and Love Chronicles...
What a hommage to both Clifton & Jackie Bisset....
Al, your songs are still beautifully constructed stories, all of them worthy of poem status!
(saw you live with Dave N. in Bristol on May 7th 15, by the way, you are still a massive artist with your nearly "70 annum" sunshine, respect)
Aah! Thanks for posting this, brings back memories of my youth.
