Al Stewart - Carol Lyrics

Sometimes it seems unimaginable
That you were ever any other way
With your white rose face and your orphan clothes
Embroidered jeans and silver chains
You're a well known face in all the hang-out places
Where the lost souls congregate
You sit all night, but you talk too fast
I don't know what you're trying to say

Oh Carol, I think it's time for running for cover, a-ha
Believe me, you're everyone's and nobody's lover, a-ha
You've got a one-way ticket for all your yesterdays

I know your daddy said he'd talk to you
But he never really found the time
And your TV mother with her cocktail eyes
Could never really reach your mind
So you fixed your star to a passing dream
And took a cocaine holiday
Now the years flow round you in a muddy stream
And you need another place to stay.

Oh Carol, I think it's time for running for cover, a-ha
Believe me, you're everyone's and nobody's lover, a-ha
You've got a one-way ticket for all your yesterdays

Reach down, silvery ship from the stars, I know you're there
I know you'll understand me, you can take me anywhere
I know you must be there

Well, sometimes it seems impossible
That the game could get that rough
But the stage is set, the exit's barred
And the make-up won't come off
So you make your bow to the balcony
You light another cigarette
And the lights grow dim as the music starts
And it's easy to forget

Oh Carol, I think it's time for running for cover, a-ha
Believe me, you're everyone's and nobody's lover, a-ha
You've got a one-way ticket for all your yesterdays

Reach down, silvery ship from the stars, I know you're there
I know you'll understand me, you can take me anywhere
I know you must be there

You're my inspiration. Contact me or have Steve Chapmanmgmt call. Peter White is in Desert Ridge this week. I'll go see him.

  18. S.... G....

I heard he's Rod Stewart's little brother. I don't know if it's true or not...

    S.... G....

+Sandy Greenleaf    No.   Definitely not siblings, and presumably not related at all, since the Wikipedia articles on the two of them make no mention of a relationship.    (It would be near-impossible for them to be brothers, because Rod Stewart was born only 8 months earlier than Al.)

    S.... G....

wrong. Stewart is a common name.

  19. R.... T....

also kick off of Alan Parsons Project

  20. T.... ....

This song got me blown in my family's garage as a youth! Thank you Al!

    T.... ....

    @Tsnore
    "...blown...?"
As in fellatio...blow job...b/j...head...'oral...to fellate...stuff like that; to this tune?!

    T.... ....

    @Tsnore You're a vulgar piece of shit, aren't you?

    T.... ....

+Tsnore For me it was" Yes , Close to the Edge"

    T.... ....

+Themanwhocameback2 He's just looking back. Us old guys have memories. Get your head out of your ass

    T.... ....

And yes, of course her name was Carol!

  21. c.... m....

that guitar solo is why I bought the album in 1975

    c.... m....

Big props on that one; me too !

    c.... m....

@chris mcdermott how many times Mark Knopfler has listened to this one!!!

    c.... m....

@Rinus Tenk I just recently got into Al's music and, having grown up on Knopfler, I was shocked to find that he had not played on "Carol."

    c.... m....

+chris mcdermott And you are glad you did.

  22. B.... M....

Yeah this album was played a lot at St. Francis University (College in 1974). Was lucky to see Al and Renaissance together in Philly in 1975. Awesome show. Love the Modern Times album but not quite as much as "Past Present and Future". Good stuff.

    B.... M....

I had the opportunity to see 2 shows with them at the great Tower Theatre in Philly.

    B.... M....

@Bob McCrindle Al Stewart and Renaissance! Saw 'em both in ' 77., in Jersey.

  23. o.... a....

    fenomenal......................

  24. G.... V....

Every song on this album is great...the dark and rolling sea with Al Stewart on guitar and Tim Renwick on electric..you can't do better..

    G.... V....

Tbh, Alan Parsons had a big hand in bringing the great talent to Al in this era. I hear Alan Parsons as much as Stewart in this song. Every note accurate, impeccable timing, and just enough introduction of supporting sounds at just the right time set this album and the two that follow this apart from Stewart's other works.

  25. T.... H....

    This song cook's right along...

  26. P.... A....

Reminds me of my first "real girlfriend

  27. d.... ....

reminds me of who im with now.....whatever. not lie she nor the millions of people who have never heard this song care. one of the best tunes ever

  28. 6.... ....

reminds me of a girl who sat on my face when i was 12

    6.... ....

    Tell us more

  29. a.... a....

I love this songh about a party slut.nice gutaire think its renwick.Als like the woddy allen of rock he's always psychoanalyzing everyone in his songs kinda like bob dylan!! hey is there a comparasin here? The dark and the rolling sea will meet the salty dog one day in rock and roll heavan! Its so sad when youfind a girl who will only love you for what you can make not who who are!

  30. D.... G....

THE BEST Al Stewart song. Love it, love it.

  31. D.... ....

At least I know she's alive! She'll always have a soft spot in my heart, she's the one who took my virginity. The boyfriend I referred to in my other post became her first husband and father of three of her kids. A couple of weeks ago I found his death notice online from a local paper...time marches on...

  32. N.... ....

Ahh, we have all had those sorts of ladies in our lives.. the ones that are so complicated that you wonder what you were thinking at the time. And Lets face it, Al brings back memories of the time you first heard him. I am glad you got to talk to your "Crazy Anne", but i wonder if those sorts of memories are not best left in the past?. Either way, good for you!

  33. d.... a....

al never has any thing nice to say about women only men cause hes a homosexual and hates women

    d.... a....

you so wrong. Al is highly heterosexual. He's not gay. Are you saying that because of his s's? Speach impediment.

  34. P.... W....

wow you found her agin on facebook lol
i'm 56 and still looking fotr a long lost girl friend

  35. j.... ....

    Grandiosa cancion.....grandiosos ´70 s.......

  37. k.... ....

    Sooo cool

  38. k.... ....

    I love you Al

  39. l.... ....

3:32 This sounds like Dire Straits.

    l.... ....

Or Dire Straits sounds like Al.

  40. L.... F....

    al stewart....SHEER CLASS

  41. f.... ....

    beautiful !

  42. b.... ....

Another gem from Modern Times! Love it! Stewart is a better lyricist then Bernie Taupin, IMHO. Thanks for posting.

  43. t.... ....

@cherimelodie I wasn't thinking about that, but you get it now. :)

Speaking of plagiarism though, wasn't this just the silliest thing. They first wanted something like 65% of the royalties, but finally got 5%. They should have been denied for even asking for such a ridiculous number:

@cherimelodie Perhaps this will give you a little taste of my fears:

  45. D.... ....

@LaserBeam002 By the sound of it she's lived a pretty rough life. Married three times, the last (current?) one was (is?) abusive, her youngest (of six) says he hates his dad's guts because of his abuse...I think she's had a hard time of it. When I last saw her, in January of 1978, her last statement to me sounded almost like a cry for help. Can't help but wonder what might have happened if I had answered that cry...

  46. N.... P....

Stewart's recordings all sound amazing. Thanks for posting this . . .

  47. c.... ....

The stage is set. The exits barred. And the makeup won't come off.

  48. D.... ....

Update on my "Crazy Anne" post: after all these years I found her yesterday on Facebook. Kind of amazed she's still alive at 53 years old...

  49. D.... ....

Thirty five years later this song STILL reminds me of an old girlfriend. Last time I saw her she was spaced out of her mind, giving me some weed to make up for what I had gotten from her six months earlier that was about 1/8 oz. short...the last thing she said to me was to give me her phone number but asked me never to call because her boyfriend would get mad.

Here's to you, Crazy Anne...whereever you are...

  50. t.... ....

    @pupikensan I made a frightening discovery today.

    Check it out at watch?v=3X7PvU6qYEA&NR=1

This was done 10 months before Carol was released. Is it just me, or is Al a closet Rubettes fan? That high part sounds a lot like the guitar refrain, here!

I'm in mortal fear, at the possibilities of someone doing a Carol/Sugar Baby Love medley...

  51. R.... H....

Al must one day get the recognition he deserves as one of Britain's best ever musician/song writer.

  52. p.... ....

This song is my most favorite song!
It is the most impressed one for me! I' sure that Al Stewart is one of the greatest musicians!
I've just rememterd those days to listen to this song !
I'm very thankful for the user who has made this song up on the YouTube!
