Al Jarreau - The Masquerade Is Over Lyrics

My blue horizon is turning grey
And my dreams are drifting away

Your eyes don't shine like they used to shine
And the thrill is gone when your lips meet mine
I'm afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

Your words don't mean what they used to mean
They were once inspired, now they're just routine
I'm afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

I guess I'll have to play Pagliacci
And get myself a clown's disguise
And learn to laugh like Pagliacci
With tears in my eyes

You look the same, you're a lot the same
But my heart says "no, no, you're not the same"
I'm afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

I guess I'll have to play Pagliacci
And get myself a clown's disguise
And learn to laugh like Pagliacci
With tears in my eyes

You look the same, you're a lot the same
But my heart says "No, no, you're not the same"
I'm afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

Hands down, my favorite vocal jazz recording of all time. Vocal fireworks.

  9. R.... d....

    This is not jazz singing.

    R.... d....

@Cy Rus Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Jackie Paris, Julie London, Carmem MacRae, Chet Baker, June Christy, Kevin Mahogany, Beverly Kenney, Milli Vernon, Hellen Carr, Rita Reys among others are jazz singers.

Lots of good singers there....citing other singers does not make your argument. Define Jazz singing, Ricardo. You really are trying to make a ridiculous argument. Your *preference* of singers does not change the fact that this album is chock full of straight up jazz. Shame you can't comprehend that.

obviously you don't seem to think jazz vocalists existed or evolved after the 50s or 60s. All great vocalists (although Helen Carr bit dubious) but you're out of touch if you don't acknowledge Jarreau probably because he straddled different genres. You're a jazz snob..i get it.. blessings.

BTW, so many people and organizations already recognize him as a jazz singer. I suppose those Grammys are fake. lolol Wanker indeed

@hottubz1965 Let’s “think” like you: pop musicians are admired by millions and earn many prizes, therefore they are superior to Brahms and Lennie Tristano.

Whoa, exceptional - love it.  I've heard many people who are stuck in one genre of music make fun of Al.  I was lucky enough to see him in person.  GREAT SHOW, GREAT TALENT.  (This song reminds me how difficult it must be to keep love going.....  )  You know - feeling like an old, once-favorite recording played too often is not such a good feeling.  But then, there are a few success stories.  Good song :)

The Moonglows did this song long before A J did it,,,,al does a good job with it,,but I think the Moonglows version better... That's my opinion... Check out the Moonglows version..
