AFI - The Spoken Word Lyrics

[Spoken]
We held hands on the last night on earth
Our mouths filled with dust, we kissed in the fields and under trees
Screaming like dogs, bleeding dark into the leaves
It was empty on the edge of town but we knew everyone floated
Along the bottom of the river
So we walked through the waste where the road curved into the sea
And the shattered seasons lay
And the bitter smell of burning was on you like a disease
In our cancer of passion you said, "Death is a midnight runner"
The sky had come crashing down like the news of an intimate suicide
We picked up the shards and formed them into shapes
Of stars that wore like an antique wedding dress
The echoes of the past broke the hearts of the unborn
As the ferris wheel silently slowed to a stop
The few insects skittered away in hopes of a better pastime
I kissed you at the apex of the maelstrom and asked
If you would accompany me in a quick fall
But you made me realize that my ticket wasn't good for two
I rode alone
You said, "The cinders are falling like snow"
There is poetry in despair, and we sang with unrivaled beauty
Bitter elegies of savagery and eloquence
Of blue and grey
Strange, we ran down desperate streets and carved our names in the flesh of the city
The sun was stagnated somewhere beyond the rim of the horizon
And the darkness is a mystery of curves and lines
Still, we lay under the emptiness and drifted slowly outward
And somewhere in the wilderness we found salvation scratched
Into the earth like a message

I think ofthe tradgedy of Chernobyl when I hear this. "The ferris wheel comes to a stop!"

  2. E.... C....

I have heard this song hundreds of times but never knew the lyrics to this part, they move me to tears and I for once am at a loss for words

  3. R.... A....

I forgot how outrageously haunting and exquisite this shit is omg. Davey Havok had a greater influence on me than anyone or anything else I wanna thank him someday for keeping me writing and drawing and alive when I was a sad suicidal teenager

  4. p.... ....

So haunting, this poem has stuck with me for years. Really makes you feel like its the last day on Earth.

  5. J.... T....

If I ever kill myself.. It will be to this. The most moving piece ever

  6. D.... ....

    creepy!!

  7. C.... ....

Reminds me of Ray Bradbury for some reason.

  8. m.... ....

damn someone should make a movie based on this story

  9. D.... P....

    I love this poem

  10. a.... p....

It made me think of a child living through the end of the world, and then as he grows up he sees the remnants of human civilization crumble and decay, and as he's getting old, near the end of his life, he sees nature start to bloom again and overtake the wasteland the humans left behind...and knows that someday, far beyond his lifetime perhaps, the earth will be pure and empty again, all the signs of mankind wiped clean.

  11. H.... T....

  17. S.... S....

the first time i heard this was back when i got the cd and i was playing it before i feel to sleep and i heard this poem. It was so beautiful and you can feel the poem almost you breath wiht it your heart slows and you slow down to.

  18. T.... ....

The contrast of different voices, the aging of the reader, transcends this into something greater than the words themselves which are quite excellent. The music excentuates the mood perfectly. Beautiful.

  19. J.... M....

@ckydbv What it sounds like to me is that it's about the Chernobyl diaster. What cements this for me is the part about the ferris wheel. There's an abandoned amusement part within the area of nuclear fallout.

  20. T.... B....

@JALorenzen DO you know what kind of flowers they are?

  21. R.... B....

@fatbeachedwhale There is equal beauty in the Dark as there is in the Light.

  23. R.... B....

@OkamiUsaretama I would think that "...But Home in Nowhere" on iTunes is 13:00 or w/e minutes long, having TTI and the poem on it.

  40. L.... d....

wtf do you think an elegie is?!!? Pardon my spelling as Im sure its wrong, but use phoenetics.

  41. L.... d....

Ok, saying its bad is one thing, but saying a five year old could write a better poem? If you seriously believe that... Just think to yourself for a moment, a FIVE year old? They write poems about flowers and butterflys. No one could write a better poem than this. Your so....dimwitted if you cant see that! Please tell me you arent serious, and that you have better spelling then "alowed" and "oppinion"

  42. L.... d....

Beauty isnt kittens and sunshine all the time if thats what your thinking. It so many different things, this poem is astonishing, and I'm sorry you cant process the depth in this poem.

  43. R.... ....

it doesn`t make me depressed, but it fills me with this feeling that is something else... like... wow... how beautiful, it hits me in the stomach and the heart, but not in a bad way... it`s like I want to listen to it forever^^

I've never heard this poem before, but Im glad I have now.

  46. N.... O....

This is very dark, but at same time beautiful.

  47. F.... ....

i like it because its creative and like every song by AFI its meaningful and a work of art. but i cant see why people think its beautiful or why they cry listening to it. its very dark and depressing, unless u like that

  48. J.... O....

Now every time i listen to this i get teary eyed and end up crying x_____X

  49. J.... O....
