Afghan Whigs, The - Gentlemen Lyrics

Your attention please
Now turn off the light
Your infection please
I haven't got all night

Understand
Do you understand?
Understand
I'm a gentleman

I stayed in too long
But she was the perfect fit
And we dragged it out so long this time
Started to make each other sick

But now I've got time for you
For you, you, you and you and me too
Well, come and get it, come and get it
Cause I'm done

Understand
Do you understand?
Understand, I'm a gentleman
I'm a gentleman

I waited for the joke
It never did arrive
And words I thought I'd smoke

Let me in I'm cold
All messed up but nowhere to go
You got indecision, and indecision is my enemy
Well, unlock the cabinet, hey
I'll take whatever you got, got, got
Now I'm on it, now I'm on it
And you're done

I waited for the joke
It never did arrive
And words I thought I'd choke
I hardly recognize

"Your infection please, I haven't got all night." What did you get up to Greg?

  2. R.... L....

When MTV stilled played videos. One of favorite songs of this era.

  3. C.... W....

    this was a good album.

  4. S.... C....

The video is like a Raymond Carver story brought to life and infused with Ecstasy and sinister cool like hot chocolate and candle wax on your bare skin

    S.... C....

    "Understand, do you understand..?"
that the song and video are basically about date tape, predatory male sexuality, insincerity, and callousness..?

  5. T.... M....

I stayed too long but she was the perfect fit = greatest lyric ever.

    T.... M....

You know its basically about date rape right..?

    Its "...in too long" btw

  6. v.... d....

This is a fresh sweet memberberry. Not like all the sour ones. 😉😉

These guys should have been bigger than Nirvana.
But you know how it goes.

  7. E.... E....

    Let me in Im cold

    Dope and heartbreak...fuck...

  10. C.... P....

Amazing how this song crept into my mind after not having listened to this album in about 20 years. It still holds up incredibly well. Gotta dig up this CD. From start to finish its a great listen.

  11. A.... B....

i discovered this band when i was in highschool in 2005 and never stopped listening. I thought i was late to the party back then i cant even begin to understand how kids feel when they discover this music today

  12. M.... C....

great track from a great LP

  13. C.... d....

Yeah I liked them in the 90's, but he needs to give it up trying to look all sexy in this video, ew

  14. F.... H....

love the part at 0:47 where he fogs up the window ;)

  15. m.... m....

The last time I heard this song, Bush had just been voted out of office, and grunge was exploding all over. I thought I remembered this song being more heavy. I thought I remembered the singer being old. I thought I remembered more distortion. Then I thought about it. I had forgotten that back then it wasn't about your electronics or effects, it was about playing your instruments and making something cool, deep, and intelligent. Do it yourself type stuff. 26 years later, music sucks ass, and nobody plays in instrument anymore. On top of that it's a mindfuck to think this song is over 25 years old.

  16. P.... R....

For some odd reason, the singer in this video always reminded me of Phil Oakey.

  17. c.... ....

Mark Cuban's hair was so cool in this video.

why keep it to yourself, share the fkg thing!

    j.... ....

    j.... ....

the video was shot in Minneapolis in 1993, directed by Phil Harder. It's in black & white and the label thought it was too "arty" so they ordered up a new clip in color. I would upload it but its on VHS :(

  38. c.... o....

Whom is really in control now?
give me a minute and I will try to find out.
    please try again later.
we are all out at moment.
ask for Prod. He may answer. if not.

I was friends with Dave "Daveaux" Rosser and played with him many times on Bourbon St back in the early 2000's. Incredible musician and amazing person. Very sad the day I found out he had passed. Peace.

Their are so fucking young in the video. I love ' em

  41. P.... A....

I cannot remember the Baltimore Orioles' player, but this was his intro song walking up the plate to bat. It was awesome!!!!!

  42. w.... ....

24 years and I still remember every line

  43. I.... ....

I found this band to be the "thinking man"s alternative. Just like Tool is the thinking man's metal. Book T is the thinking man's funk, etc. This whole album speaks so strongly to what it is to be a man in our society and all of the conflicts that go with it. I absolutely LOVE this band and this was my first album of theirs I picked up. So much respect for them and for the material! This album STILL holds up.

  44. 1.... 9....

    E.... P....

Gentleman is a fantastic album highly recommend their album Black Love quite a different feel to to it bus still fantastic. Also if you like Greg Dulli the lead singer he had band after Afghan Whigs called The Twilight Singers which was quite good as well.

    E.... P....

So happy for you, This band has an incredible discography! I am so happy they are still at it today :)

  59. R.... P....

can't get enough of this piece

  60. R.... ....

The black guy looks like Geoffrey Holder, the Uncola guy from the 60's.

    R.... ....

Was he the Caribbean guy? "Crisp and clean and no caffeine. Never had it--" [deep-voiced laugh: "Ha ha ha ha!"] --"never will!" I guess I ought to go check for myself. God, I remember him from the early '70s!

    R.... ....

Yep, the guy in the "Gentlemen" video looks exactly like him. I didn't realize, but Geoffrey Holder did ads for 7 Up through the '70s and into the 1980s. He also did a variety of other things as well. Thanks for reminding me of him and letting me know his name. Here's a classic ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXmc7DG4uu8

  61. f.... ....

    Dulli is pure sex...

    f.... ....

    +fairiebloom yes he is

  70. s.... s....

Hey, Nik Fowler. In answer to your question. The band formed just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. In the little college town of Oxford. The school is Miami U. of Ohio. I'm not positive Greg was attending there, but that's kinda the origin. Greg's had  success in other area's, but the "Wigs" are his passion. If you listen to all their stuff, you can always find "that one song" that just knocks you back !  For me, the album "Black Love" is just perfect, start to finish. The song "Faded" is the killer though. When I hear it, I'm flooded with a million thoughts and emotions. I wish they would tour through this area. Maybe someday. "Wigs Rock" ! ! !

    s.... s....

Reds and bangles sucks but yea I hard there from there

    s.... s....

Went to High school in Oxford and Miami U.

It never will get much better and greater than this...

  80. J.... D....

This song still makes it for me, over 20 years later and it's still as fresh today as when I first heard it. Especially the power in some of the verses that stand out:
     "I stayed in too long
But she was the perfect fit
And we dragged it out so long this time
Started to make each other sick" and
    "Let me in I'm cold
All messed up but nowhere to go
You got indecision, and indecision is my enemy
    Well, unlock the cabinet, hey
I'll take whatever you got, got, got
Now I'm on it, now I'm on it
    And you're done"
    Wow! Fuckin' brilliant.

  81. I.... S....

every time i hear this song it sounds more amazing than the last.

  82. r.... ....

@goandrewgo plenty...and not many come close to this searing ferocious missive

  87. G.... ....

Did not like them much 20 years ago.  Lately, however, they have sounded more appealing.  Odd, that.

  88. j.... ....

Always remembered the "morphing" for lack of a better term to a black man and then an old man.  The old man absolutely nails his singing parts and his expressions are priceless.

  89. n.... ....

Been a fan since I saw them live when I was 16 and have never actually seen this video before, and, well, Mr Dulli...

  90. g.... ....

    sexy rock

  91. M.... ....

I was searching for this song for the longest time!

  92. R.... W....

I like their feeling of rhythm. Found them through You My Flower but their riffs seem too similar unfortunately. Nice band though.

  93. J.... S....

    Nice way to put it.

  94. r.... ....

jeez what a song, what an album.. but the video is still unwatchable!

  95. J.... S....

Utter genius. Floored by this album when I first heard it two years ago and it hasn't let go of me since. Best CD I've ever heard.

  96. J.... S....

    Fantastic description!

  97. B.... L....

But, they're not from Seattle. They were signed to SubPop for a coupe albums. And Greg lived there for a while during the Black Love era (used to run into him). But yes, unfortunately people tried to shoehorn them into the genre, not really knowing how to market them.
