Adams, Ryan - Sylvia Plath Lyrics

I wish I had a Sylvia Plath
Busted tooth and a smile
And cigarette ashes in her drink
The kind that goes out and then sleeps for a week
The kind that goes out on her
To give me a reason, for well, I dunno

And maybe she'd take me to France
Or maybe to Spain and she'd ask me to dance
In a mansion on the top of a hill
She'd ash on the carpets
And slip me a pill
Then she'd get pretty loaded on gin
And maybe she'd give me a bath
How I wish I had a Sylvia Plath

And she and I would sleep on a boat
And swim in the sea without clothes
With rain falling fast on the sea
While she was swimming away, she'd be winking at me
Telling me it would all be okay
Out on the horizon and fading away
And I'd swim to the boat and I'd laugh
I gotta get me a Sylvia Plath

And maybe she'd take me to France
Or maybe to Spain and she'd ask me to dance
In a mansion on the top of a hill
She'd ash on the carpets
And slip me a pill
Then she'd get pretty loaded on gin
And maybe she'd give me a bath
How I wish I had a Sylvia Plath
I wish I had a Sylvia Plath

"Out on the horizon, and fading away..."

  8. N.... j....

This song seems to be less about Sylvia, and more about Adam's misguided romanticism of her mental health issues. idk, she didn't even smoke.

    N.... j....

around the last 6 months of her life she smoked

Ryan Adams is an underrated American troubador . Like his champion Elton John, he's very prolific, and his rootsy alt-country and tender ballads (Elton's strengths as well) are hit-or-miss, sounding generic sometimes and at other times, brilliant. Ryan's quavery smoker's voice is capable of tender expression. His masterpiece thus far is "Gold," an album where all his good eggs are in one basket, including the plaintive piano ballad "Sylvia Plath.". Adams, clearly a poetic lyricist, pines for the sensuous capricious woman he imagines the depressed but incandescent Plath to be. The song ends by imagining one of her famous suicide attempts as he swims out of sight.

+Austin Brumfield Nah mate, Heartbreaker rules!

    A.... B....

Plath & Sexton were geniuses who strolled away to their dark closets, suggest they were abused as children, yet they produced their gilded poetry in this dire and fomenting apocalyptic way, suggest that torture souls are best kept away from life and the binds of depression besiege all who pick up a quill to express it, shall be cursed forever!

In your imagination, perhaps. I’ m certainly not sure what you imagine though I wrote this and you’re just reminiscing about when you thought you might be a writer and not just a half-rate ‘guessing’ critic...yea, you missed entirely...try this approach(I did when I wrote Sylvia Plath, and I feel sure Adams composed with my intent in mind...not you critics... Sylvia was exactly the person portrayed in the song, not the ones these morons are claiming. Hillarious

  14. b.... ....

A lovely tribute from a man who I believe knows what it's like to drown in one's own thoughts. Here's thanking them both for letting us know someone else went down down that beautiful rabbit hole...

  15. i.... ....

She did lots of ordinary things. She looked after her children- She loved to cook- She studied THE JOY OF COOKING- She liked needlework.... Her husband was just a jerk. She was mentally ill-.

    i.... ....

iclandgirl wtf are you even talking about

    i.... ....

@Dakota Robinson Sylvia Plath, the GREAT Poet Ryan was singing about {Ryan wrote a book of Poetry also}, so it was about a Prolific poet who went mad. Read about her, and read some of her work, pretty cool stuff, but its real dark, just like a lot of Ryan's songs.

  16. I.... G....

The upside down flag is there because the album was released shortly after the 9/11 attacks. And upside down flag is a universal distress signal.

  17. J.... R....

    Cool...He's "deeper"
    than I thought.....

  18. A.... W....

What a great writer and performer this guy is - if you dont know it check out Ralph mctells 'sylvia' - beautiful too.

  19. s.... ....

perhaps because Sylvia Plath was hauntingly beautiful herself...

  20. s.... ....

WELL SAID!!!! most people have NO idea what the upside down flag even signifies (that's why morons think its disrespectful DUHHH lol) for those who do NOT know...it is a DISTRESS sign!!! geesh get over your un-educated selves would ya

  21. C.... O....

lol yea ryan adams is a sellout... gtho silly head

  22. s.... ....

There's something hauntingly beautiful about this. Adams can sure write a song.

  23. P.... H....

There are some real twits around. The album speaks lovingly about the USA, go listen to Ryan Adams New York, New York. The upside down flag is a symbol of national distress. As for Sylvia Plath, aennekin83 nailed it, Also he is using her as the basis of his 'perfect woman', a creative spirit who doesn't do normal/banal things that ordinary people do. A woman like Sylvia but not exactly Sylvia and someone he could take care of and who take care of him.

  24. A.... E....

@iclandgirl Actually, I'm pretty sure he is a huge fan of Sylvia Plath and has been since a very young age. It's an interpretation and partially metaphor for falling in love with a destructive personality because genius and sane don't always go together. Someone who loves literature should understand the concept of not taking everything at face value.

  25. F.... J....

@iclandgirl --If you knew anything about "this guy," you wouldn't have written this.

  26. r.... ....

"Would I salute the American flag? No. But maybe if you soaked it in heroin I'd suck it." - William Burroughs

  27. i.... ....

This guy knows nothing of Sylvia Plath. Just wanted to make a song, that would make people want to buy an album- that had a song called Sylvia Plath on it. stupid.

    i.... ....

    Bullshit

  28. S.... ....

Absolutely perfect. Melancholy sound. Terrible sadness. A longing sound. A desire for a relationship with a wonderful, albeit terribly troubled and wrecked woman. I think this song is a perfect artistic expression of just how many people feel towards Plath. I know I do. After reading her poems, I feel a desire to have known her, to be around her. Great song. She was a hurt, fragile-looking woman. A poetic genius. An artistic giant.

  29. w.... ....

CD come out SEPTEMBER 25 2001 you freaking retards. FLAG UPSIDE DOWN = EXTREME NATIONAL DISTRESS. go hate somewhere else. oh, and get a f**cking CLUE.

  30. M.... T....

    @BassBasherz :) That's hilarious. And I don't even care if you're being serious, ironic, or 15.

  31. T.... S....

I would like to say that when the American Flag is flown upside down is a symbol of Extream distress . The Album was such....AND it came out RIGHT after 9-11.
Take it easy on Mr. Adams.

  32. J.... P....

@deadboys1010 Juts because you don't understand doesn't make this song pointless, what he mean's is he wished he had a woman as eccentric as her. cause his life would be more exciting.

  33. m.... ....

Best song & lyrics ever written

  34. i.... ....

i cant understand a freaking word he is saying.

  35. J.... ....

  37. t.... ....

    @crazycrow76
yeah, exact same thing here! i'm not a fan of adams either but i love plath so i had to give this a listen. the lyrics really do show a different side of her than what I would think...

  38. C.... M....

@acedrums bahahahaaaa. i essentially agree although I also would say its an interesting interpretation that it is infact upside down.ts differant, and makes you think. just like this song and this album.

  39. f.... ....

    About the upside down flag........
In an interview Ryan Adams got mad at the interviewer because he accused him of trying to say he was anti-American. That was absolutely false when the stars are on the left it means in distress. It came out 2001 ya know. He was only saying the the US was in distress. It has nothing to do with anti-American.

  40. h.... ....

Was doing a report on Sylvia Plath when I first heard this song.. pretty amazing song.

  41. S.... ....

ya'll be nice to the "poet" question. perhaps she was also drinking when she first heard the song. least she didnt asked everyone "what's a slyvia flag?" like I did.

  42. S.... ....

he's accepting sylvia for what she is... what others threw away. at her worst & yet he wishes. gotta love that.

  43. B.... L....

The upside down American flag is disappointing.

  44. W.... W....

I thought it was about the chartered surveyor Sylvia Plath...

  45. R.... B....

Do you know him personally? If I had the media portraying me falsely I'd be a bit of an ass too.

  46. v.... ....

Great song from a great album.
