ABBA - I Let The Music Speak Lyrics

I'm hearing images, I'm seeing songs
No poet has ever painted
Voices call out to me, straight to my heart
So strange yet we're so well acquainted
I let the music speak, with no restraints
I let my feelings take over
Carry my soul away into the world
Where beauty meets the darkness of the day

Where my mind is like an open window
Where the high and healing winds blow
From my shallow sleep the sounds awake me
I let them take me
(Let them wake me, let them now, let them take me)

Let it be a joke
Let it be a smile
Let it be a farce if it makes me laugh for a little while
Let it be a tear
Let it be a sigh
Coming from a heart, speaking to a heart, let it be a cry

Some streets are emptiness, dry leaves of autumn
Rustling down an old alley
And in the dead of night I find myself
A blind man in some ancient valley
I let the music speak, leading me gently
Urging me like a lover
Leading me all the way
Into a place
Where beauty will defeat the darkest day

Where I'm one with every grand illusion
No disturbance, no intrusion
Where I let the wistful sounds seduce me
I let them use me
(All illusion, no disturbance, no intrusion)

Let it be a joke
Let it be a smile
Let it be a farce if it makes me laugh for a little while
Let it be a tear
Let it be a sigh
Coming from a heart, speaking to a heart, let it be a cry

Let it be a tear
Let it be a sigh
Coming from a heart, speaking to a heart, let it be a cry

Let it be the joy of each new sunrise
Or the moment when a day dies
I surrender without reservation
No explanations
No questions why
I take it to me and let it flow through me
Yes, I let the music speak
I let the music speak

ABBA I Let The Music Speak Comments

I think this is ABBA best song it have such a power it goes under the skin on you . Really a masterpiece.

  2. G.... E....

    A hauntingly uplifting masterpiece! Wow!

As a teenager I remember working in a family record shop when the Visitors and Supertrooper were released and it was literally a long line of people queuing the full length of the shop with at least 90%+ there to buy these amazing albums. We had them on the turntable constantly....wonderful and such happy days! An ABBA release was a major event and we couldn’t ship them in quickly enough. It was personally magical too as a huge fan since the night of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 when I was only 11. Thank You For The Music ABBA 🙏🏼♥️🙏🏼

  4. L.... N....

“The best ABBA song you’ve never heard of” - not a backhanded compliment, but an accurate one: it’s almost never mentioned when their work is discussed, and I came to it rather late myself, but it’s one of their best - atmospheric, lush, big & powerful, and easily the top song on The Visitors.
Thematically (if nothing else) it’s similar to “Thank You for the Music,” but this one is more about the transforming & releasing power of the art form; not quite as unconventional as the earlier song, but a good deal better overall.
It’s also perhaps the best of their ‘stage-musical’ style songs - like “Money, Money, Money,” “The Day Before You Came,” and so on - although you could make the argument that almost all of their songs could easily fit into a stage-musical setting! Certainly they were able to put a great deal of drama even into what would be, in other hands, a few minutes of frothy fun, and in a more serious-minded and dramatic song like this, that gift is really in evidence.
Among its many great qualities, what really stands out in this song is Frida: this is, by far, the best singing she ever did with ABBA, going up & down the scale, not to mention volume and intensity, all as if it’s the easiest thing in the world; amazing stuff. It’s also a little different from her usual lead songs, which often emphasized the sultry, jazz-club smoothness in her voice and tended to be rather emotionally restrained or stoic. This gives her a chance really to let fly - even more so than in “When All is Said & Done” - and the cliché of hairs standing up on one’s arms or the back of the neck is completely true here. At her best, Frida seemed to be saying to the listener: “You’re mine now, so strap in; when I’m done I’ll drop you back into reality again, breathless & dizzy.”
Although this piece clearly belongs to Frida, Agnetha deserves a mention as well, as she provides some nice shading at different points. The almost choral combination of their two voices, added to the music, creates a very powerful effect - the comparison to “Bohemian Rhapsody” is apt, even though thematically the two songs are quite different.
Certainly the song is very interesting musically, as Benny was obviously taking full advantage of what his synthesizer could do; some of their later songs can be a little too synth-heavy & ‘eighties-sounding’ for me, but not this one.
It’s also one of the best writing jobs Bjorn ever did; he had gotten a little freer with language by this time, and the later songs tended to have more idioms & interesting turns of phrase in them than ones even a year or two before had. He wasn’t always successful in trying this, but it works perfectly here - I don’t think he could have improved on this.
It’s more than a little surprising that this song was only on The Visitors, and not put on a single (especially when “Head Over Heels” was); the same goes for “Slipping Through My Fingers,” which is my next favorite of their 1981 songs. Maybe these two wouldn’t have done too well, as “The Day Before You Came” didn’t - too dark & moody for what people wanted & expected from them - but it’s a shame that they weren’t given a shot, as they would at least be better-known today.
It’s also surprising that the members themselves don’t seem to mention this song much; it’s one of their very, very best pieces of work, and they should be extremely proud of it (Frida especially).

  6. p.... ....

What the hell? Music straight from brodway

  7. S.... ....

The best song of the great artists Björn and Benny. And of course, so well sung by Frida. So incredibly beautiful...

  8. t.... ....

AT 03:03 amazing breath control.. she goes for ages without taking a breath.. WOW.. Just amazing

  9. L.... M....

Uhhhhhh.. how long did Frida go without taking a breath at 03:03..????? 😳

  10. D.... F....

Although this is as good as any classic ABBA track with faultless vocals, I never connected with it. For me the best song on that album was "Soldiers" very haunting and atmospheric.

  11. J.... H....

This is incredibly difficult for words. Haunting is only one. Majestic, beautiful ...... It's endless praise!
Stig needs mention. But those voices! And these lyrics! The melody! The poetry

  12. M.... L....

Frida una voz muy rica en matices..

  13. 5.... F....

The most underrated song of the late 20th Century

  14. t.... ....

From bang-a-boomerang, which is a great pop song, to this. I think this song shows more than any that Benny and Björn had done everything they could within Abba and were literally bursting out of its constraints as a pop group. Just listen through headphones and concentrate on what's going on in the background, it's so complicated. My favourite part is coming out of the second chorus at 4:25 the layers of vocals is incredible. Frida's beautifully clear voice is stunning.

  15. H.... 9....

This is their most complex song , I think

  16. g.... ....

I have always loved this song! It was my favourite when I was a young girl.

  17. J.... C....

One of the most beautiful ABBA songs! These guys were really special...every song they wrote was fantastic...

Thanks for introducing me to I let the music speak a few days ago: it is now highly addictive and I'm recommending it myself to others.....

  50. A.... B....

    Absolute classic. Pure Abba

    A.... B....

Structural and poetic complexity and this is certainly on a different level to typical Abba songs that most people will be aware of.

    A.... B....

Raymond Morgan ABBA songs had a complexity to them. ABBA's music is hard to cover 1 to 1. Cher just recorded a ABBA tribute album. Cher said, in press releases she had no idea how hard they were to sing until she had to sing them.
    -----------------------------

They are difficult to sing and there is lots of instrumentation, counter point, major/minor chord changes that are not usual. But they manage to make everything fit in and sound good.

David Grohl gave ABBA a huge compliment many years ago; Paraphrasing, he said that his wish is to write the perfect song like F@#$*+& ABBA.

Grohl, a few years age played guest drums on a Ghost cover of ABBA's 'I'm A Marionette'.

    ABBA understood Western Tonal Music.
    MELODY HARMONY RHYTHM TIMBRE
    They checked all the boxes.

  56. P.... S....

Pure 'chiaroscuro'. It is dark, sombre, disturbing... and then becomes clear, bright, soft, warm... and then ambiguous, horrid, tragic... inbetween comic, hilarant, flee... This is not just a simple pop song. 'The Visitors' is not just a simple pop album. A masterwork born in those days (80s) when post-modernism (as the basis of our 'Weltanschauung' today) began to break trough... That said, if I had to debscribe this song whith just one word, I would not doubt it, TRAGIC!

  57. A.... M....

Incredible piece of music from the best pop group mankind has ever been blessed with. Frida your vocals are truly out of this world. Such a soothing and optimistic piece of music conbined with your increddulous, unique vocals allow any one to climb over any mountain in their lives and no matter how high it is by listening to this. My favourite ABBA song of all time.

ABBA's music on The Visitors is more pristine and ambitious than it had ever been, its themes darker, its personal politics more tangled. Both of the band's couples had divorced, but the men were still writing lyrics for the women to sing-- meaning it's easy to see a cruel edge in tracks like "One of Us", in which a woman regrets her new independence over a typically gorgeous melody. All of this has made The Visitors a perennial critic's favorite. It's the record on which the wintry melancholy of "late ABBA"-- whose sadness had bubbled under their music almost from the start-- could finally dominate.. Quote the pitch fork.
Only difference is The day before you Came. .......... for me ~ Thank you Jennie

She has a magnificent repertoire of her own. Spotify has a great collection of all her songs which are mostly in Swedish from pre-ABBA up to today. Her latest is the 2018 Spanish Version of her vocal lead of ABBA's Andante Andante.

I have so much respect and admiration for this group. There isn't a genre of music this band couldn't write, compose and sing. Super talented musicians, writers and composers of some of the most fantastic music ever created. With two of the MOST angelic voices ever to sing any songs. So much good I can say about this fantastic group and wonderful human beings.

    C.... A....

don't forget their sound engineer Michael B Tretow who made them sound this good.

Super Super Fantastic Wonderful Music of the highest order. Never a dull boring repetitive song. Masters in music composition. Sounds like a Andrew Lloyd Webber composition. Pure Pure Fantastic music. There never will there be another ABBA again. Original songs, singing and music composition. No one will ever touch them. LOVE YOU SO MUCH ABBA. ABBA FOREVER.

Pure masterpiece. And definitely, one of the most underrated songs !

    E.... V....

    It wasn't underrated.
It was an Album Song and not a Single release.

    E.... V....

@Stefan Duchhardt So what? Of course it's underrated. It's one of the very best Abba songs and most people have never heard of it.

    E.... V....

@Ar Ar it was the decision of Abba themselfs during that Time to release the Song never as a Single.

    E.... V....

I've always said, IMO, a lot of their best songs were NOT their big hits.

    E.... V....

@Ar Ar Could you please explain how a song can be underrated when most people have never heard of it? If they hear it and don't "rate" it, THEN it is underrated.

  82. E.... N....

Great song! And also a grand album design. I don't know, if they felt they'd left each other this moment , but the picture describes it itself. Great end of the great group. My son knowns their songs already...

Frida had some excellent songs on this album and from this era. The Visitors, Like an Angel Passing Through My Room, Cassandra, Should I Laugh or Cry, When All is Said And Done.

  95. J.... R....

I just noticed... "I let the wistful sounds seduce me". Maybe over-interpreting!
