This is going to be the first summer in probably a decade that I don’t go see the band when they come around to Philadelphia – and the reason is because I can’t get over the "Crossfire" rip off.
This song was so blatantly stolen, line for line, instrument for instrument, it is insane. Even if it was an untitled track as Nick says on Twitter, he still ripped it off completely. It is making other similarities that people on this board have pointed out extremely difficult to ignore and I find myself wondering how much other stuff the band has ripped off. It is so fucking disappointing, especially when I have sometimes forced myself to support this band even when I wasn’t really in the financial state to do so because of how much their music has meant to me over the years.
I can’t believe how let down I am by the "Crossfire" ripoff. I’ve been down with this band since 1993 and it is making me question everything. It’s just such an unbelievable disappointment, especially from the group of musicians that claims that "Coming Original" is the most important thing and claims they have such a connection with their fans.
This is not what you do when you respect your fans. This is what you do when you think your fans are dumb enough to accept someone else's work as yours because you want to churn out an album.
For a long time I’ve questioned whether or not this "commitment" to their fans was really just a way to market their music to people. And what some people have called "longevity", I can’t help but just wonder now whether or not they are cash grabs - putting out new albums consistently every two years - doing a cruise - 311 day.
I don't know why but I feel like this is Nick's fault. Regardless, I hope the band has a meeting and sorts this out with one another, otherwise they're going to wind up throwing DECADES of credibility down the shitter - all just to make a deadline on an album or "generate" a new idea.
I understand that the band has to be profitable but these things have an icky feel to them now that I saw what happened with "Crossfire". I want to wish 311 the best and continue to, but I would be lying if I said my thoughts about this band haven’t changed after this incident.

No doubt this a 311 song, yeah rythm can be based on Heist by Noisestorm (they've already talked and sorted out from what I see from other people comments), but compared to the feel, sound, mood, lyrics (Heist has only a "This's how we do it yEaH!" and another "YeAh!" later), etc. So... if it sounds, looks and tastes like 311, it's 311.
And it's not like they were the first ones to get "inspired" by other songs and artists, not even talking to them after (others commit plain robbery and there they are still rockin')

What is the problem here? This band has made original music for decades. They reach out for inspiration {publicly) for new stuff, and there's a misunderstanding that is handled professionally. Noisestorm has been credited, and honestly should do another collab with the band.

The problem is Nick wasn’t inspired by a song, he literally stole a song , put vocals on it, and worst of all; he then took full credit for writing it. It’s really not a good look. I think a lot of us “musician” fans are especially bothered by it, as we have always admired their sweeping song writing ability. I think what we’ve learned here is if Chad Sexton wrote the music ( the songs that have the unique 311 sound are usually his songs ) then it’s safe to assume it’s 100% original. If Hexum “wrote” the music, flip a coin.

@Super Glued it's none of my business how inspired Nick Hexum is. I won't lose any sleep over this. If Noisestorm is happy at the end of the day, I'm happy. He probably got a nice bump out of this, and the experience will probably wake 311 up to who they get ideas from.

There's no need to Bomb The Town or Freak Out just because they didn't Come Original, I mean, Damn. It's Alright. I've been a fan since '94 and you can still Count Me In for this album, I'm Down.
I get it though, it's easy to make Something Out of Nothing. Just try to Speak Easy and make better Use of Time. I'm sure Nick was saying, What Was I Thinking, but then realized...Don't Dwell, it's Forever Now. Sometimes you have to Let the Cards Fall where they may and move on. Don't be a Prisoner of your mind. Reconsider Everything, analyse the Places That the Mind Goes and realize that you're Lucky to be here at all. Let's just hope that they don't get All Mixed Up and make the Same Mistake Twice.

As far as the whole controversy, regardless of how long they've been together, it's no excuse for not crediting someone else's work from the start. The fact that Nick did not reach out to the creator until he got caught is not a good look, period. I'm not writing off this band outright, but they really need to sit down as a band and be honest with each other about what 311 means to them at this point. If the music is not a true representation of who they are, why are they still making music? When it becomes more about being a brand than a band, they need a break to put things in perspective. It's gut check time

I'm not ashamed of my comment at all. Sure, they added a couple guitar overlays, but the main guitar part follows the other song exactly. The tempo, the drums, the notes, the rhythm, song structure, and notes all line up. Yeah, they added vocals, but the instrumental is mostly the same. If you can't hear how similar they are then there's nothing I can say to change your mind. Some people just aren't musically inclined.
